Philosophy 101

Are you the same person you were one hour ago?

...honestly, unless you're really stubborn, I don't think you're the person you were ten seconds ago. Your personality is kinda like plate tectonics, I think; it's constantly shifting, moving, always changing, but you never feel it until something big happens, an earthquake of a personality change. It's only in retrospect that you realize how different a person you are now than you were even 6 months ago. It would make sense then that to arrive at that drastic change, you need 6 months' worth of personality alternation.

It really depends on how you define yourself. If your looking at your mind then its possible that you haven't changed too much although some new memories could have formed in the past one hour.

But then if you look at yourself anatomically, you're not even the same person you were a minute ago. In the past one hour, you have metabolized 4.5 grams of oxygen, several trillions of carbon dioxide have left your lungs and trillions of more are being assimilated.

No, because nothing remains the same for an hour, personally I get alot of mood swings in a day so basically if I’m dying out of distress it would be probably I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from laughing in the next hour, but if I take the other perspective of the word “person” which includes nature, personality and loyality I would say yes I will be the same person you had met an hour ago. I hate two-faced hypocrite people and I am surely not one of them.

I agree with Neiha to a certain level.. I don't think we're the same person we were an hour ago (But I'm STRICTLY talking about our minds and thoughts here, not anatomically)- but not at all in a way that we'd recognize. I think we all change in small, minute ways every second, although not significantly. We change our minds about different things, and sometimes these thoughts of ours shift us in a way where it molds us into someone slightly different, someone who'd see things in a different perceptive or would react in a different manner than the person who we were before we made this shift in ourselves. We'd probably only be able to see anything drastic in 6 months or so, though..

We're all like these marker boards and different things are being written on the board every second, different things are being written over and some things are just being erased completely. It'd be tough to tell what's changed (Especially if the changes are real tiny!) every hour or so, but if you step back in 6 months, the board's gonna look completely alien to you.

I dont think we remain the same fro any period of time, because we are constantly influenced by external factors and subliminal decisions, that from ahour to hour can change the way you react to things, the way you interact with people and the way you understand yourself, your priorities, your relationships and your mind links to certain things you perceive and understand things. For example the Rorschach test, based on their subconscious thought processes and fixations, every person will see a slightly different image in the ink blots. Similarly, reactions to different things change depending upon your state of mind, and so based on the fact that you will not always react the same way to something, I believe I am not the same person I was an hour ago

I would think so, yes. Because really, what makes me ME? My habits, my mannerisms, my emotions and feelings towards what I believe to be important. These things don't change in a hour, and if they did, then they were never truly a part of me. I'm not saying one doesn't change at all, of course growth and transformation are all a natural part of our lives. But I believe an hour is too short a time for someone to be a whole different person. It is never a single event that transforms our lives; it is all the action and reaction that follows it. It is the way we handle the repercussions, that moulds our personalities. And I believe that process far outlasts a single hour.

Hmm, probably not. Take this blog for example- these thunks make me think about things I probably never would have considered before. Every minute of the day, we are soaking up nuggets of information that we probably don't even realise is happening. My knowledge, my opinions, my perspective and outlook on things also make me who I really am. And it IS possible that my outlook on something can change even in an hour, if I've discovered new information or read another article.

Physically, of course, we are forever changing. And I believe that we are constantly changing even mentally- it may not be so drastic or noticeable, but it's definitely happening.

Yes I am the same person I was an hour ago. I think unless someone drastically changes in character or manner or habits then you're still the same. Basically the change has to be a big sort of change, the small things don't really matter. The small changes that you barely notice would have to pile up for it to be a big change and that takes time.

No, I believe that a person changes slightly everyday, as we learn, experience and feel new things as the time passes. This is why many people hear the comment ''You have changed''cause when we haven't met someone in a while, their not use to your new ideas and way of thinking

Not only has your personality changed your body does physically before you as well.

Personally I feel that it entirely matters on the people and events that happen around you. For example if you turn on the TV and see someone you admire, i.e a celebrity has made racist statements against your people or family, your perception of them has changed instantly.

Also if you ignore or refuse to discover things around you (stay in bed all day), nothing much will change. Whereas you spent the day socializing and communicating your perception of matters may change consciously and subconsciously.

I dont think you are, since every minute of your life you are effected by different factors of your surroundings. For example - Peer pressure at school, if a lot of your friends smoke then eventually you might be effected by that and start smoking as well.
