Will the internet ever attain consciousness or become self aware?

I believe it is possible for the internet to gain consciousness, just as I believe everything is possible. However, in order for this to happen deep research into a new software needs to be undergone because I doubt that this gain can be achieved all on it's own.

Good god, I hope not. If the internet DOES gain self-awareness, it might turn out to be a great big gossip and I have far too much personal data on the internet to be comfortable with that.

I think the internet will be self-aware to the same extent that any man-made creation would be. ...is my answer ambiguous enough? I really don't know myself.

I do think the internet might one day be able to gain consciousness. I mean, we're already at the building blocks with Siri on our iPhones!

But if we ever do come up with technology like that, I sure hope we don't decide to use it. Like Neiha said, it actually just might turn out to be a great big gossip. Similar to Siri, I think if the internet did gain consciousness, whoever created it would try to make it as life like as possible- as HUMAN like as possible. What if the internet starts gaining human attributes? Some of our qualities are in real bad taste.. I mean, what if the internet starts taking bribes in exchange for information/gossip about people? (Although I'm not sure what kind of bribes the internet would want... A software update?) What if the internet starts raging and just takes over everything and refuses to let us access anything ever again and the human race has to just start all our documentation over again!
Or maybe I've just been watching too many sci-fi movies..

Sue your comment just made me laugh for some reason (not in a bad way) it was just funny the way you looked at it, especially the bribery part.

Sue is funny, I agree :P

But for the internet to gain consciousness, we need to know what makes us conscious in the first place. I mean, we humans respond to things and we can have the computers do the same too, but what would make them self aware? and curious about philosophical ideas, or let them wonder and gasp at the awe of the world? We still don't know what makes us conscious, so I think it may ultimately be possible, but we are still a long way from that happening...

This makes me think of that movie iRobot. The main super-computer VIKI somehow managed to interpret the 3 laws in her own way which lead to a robot revolution.

So hey, anything's possible :p

But on a more serious note, I agree with Edeline. Do we really understand consciousness to begin with? The ability to think, wonder, learn, for ourselves, make our own decisions and understand the consequences? Being awake and aware of our surroundings?

I don't know, the thought seems insane right now, but 200 years ago you'd probably be called crazy if you predicted humans having a conversation with a rectangular piece of glass and metal (Siri on an iPhone)

Woah if it does then we're all in trouble hahaha can you imagine any sort of being gaining consciousness of all the information and data that it holds? I'm guessing it'll cause some sort of chaos at some point if it does happen. Anyways to answer the question if I was forced to pick yes or no I would say yes it would happen but it will be against our will in some manner.

I do think this kind success can be on day achieved. I mean the human race has been able to contact eachother from different sides of the earth using a tiny gadget. We're able to fly in a moment of hours from one country to another.

However does this success benefit our world, im not so sure. What might happen if the internet did gain consciousness?

In certain aspects the internet is slowly gaining a consciousness of its own, as our technology develops and our minds expand so does the internet, because in reality they are one in the same. As we progress&evolve so does the internet, it is our child that is bound to overthrow us, with no concern to whether or not we are its parents. We may think we are on top of the food chain now, but who knows...the internet doesn't seem so far behind.

It could be possible in the future.Although in my personal opinion the achievement of this breakthrough will not be beneficial for the human race as it will cause the human race to become reliant on technology rather then themselves.

i really think this could actually happen because by the way things are happening we have reached a stage where technology is becoming more than just smart but also self aware... for example iPhones that have software you can have a conversation with... Its definitely not a question of "if" its more or less about when it will happen and I believe its very soon because of the exponential rate of evolution the human race has attained.
