Humans…there just is no limit to the violence and insanity. How can it even be allowed to happen? It doesn’t seem fair but some countries are faithful to ‘Eye for an Eye’ and take it seriously. In this decade we are meant progress but it doesn’t seem like we are. What happened to Human Rights and Women’s Rights Activists? Were they sleeping when this happened? Maybe acid should be banned. It should be like drugs. I don’t know how a person could physically get themselves to such a stage where they could anything in order to gain something. But if the woman had her face burnt because she refused to marry him then wouldn’t it be his loss.
Oh my god ... I pity her. I understand why she would want to take revenge on him by inflicting the same pain that she has to live with. I mean if I was her, I would be infuriated as well. But I’m going to have to disagree with the ruling. Like I already mentioned in my older posts - I strongly oppose the ‘eye for an eye’ outlook and especially capital punishment, no matter what the circumstances are. I believe justice can still be proven in a more civilized and less barbaric manner. Yes I understand the pain, suffering and the need for revenge she is going through, but burning his eye’s with acid isn’t going to bring back her eye sight nor is it going to prevent him from doing it to other women. Instead, locking him up in jail would. It would prevent him from damaging other women in the future. (If other women would even be insane to marry him considering what he’s done/could do)
When I first started reading the article it seemed pretty childish really, 'you throw acid on me, so I'll throw acid on you.'
However, it then went on to say "(she)moved to Spain with the help of the Iranian government where she has undergone a series of unsuccessful operations. She briefly recovered half vision in her right eye in 2007 but an infection blinded her again."
What if this lady would never be able to see again? He took away her eyes, which I believe is one of the most crucial elements in a human body because they enable us to see and experience, merely because she refused to marry him.
So I think it's only fair that she ask the law to "inflict the same life on him that he inflicted (on her)"
I understand the trauma the woman has undergone, especially when she regained her sight briefly just to lose it AGAIN, must have been like a double blow to her happines, dignity and future. i agree with nikita, he hasn't lost anything, because he threw the acid in her face. that wasn't going to entice her to change her mind anyways, so he indeed was stupid to do something so cruel, for no benefit to himself. the ruling seems fair to me, but human activists will probably disagree.
Well, first of, I am against this whole 'eye for eye' concept. I believe that an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. And this is due to many reason that i shall reveal when we're going to have our Death Penalty debate :)
It will not benefit the victim, nor bring her back to normal. She shouldn't have splashed acid at him in the first place.
Wow, the amount of hate and violence that we humans have could lead to insane, senseless and absurd acts.
The thing is we keep saying that their punishment can be done in a more civilized manner but consider this, isn't it also horrible to think about people losing their lives, their families or their eyesight and face in this case and all he gets is 'prison' I think he'd rather enjoy that. I don't think that's punishment, that's getting away with it. We might say it's torture to be locked up in a room, yet in this case it is not worse, in my opinion. What if future murderers, rapist or people like these hear of the abolishment of 'eye for an eye' wouldn't the crime rates increase as they now know their punishment would never meet their victims?
I guess it really depends on the situation. That's why it's not an easy question to tackle:p Part of me has my heart out for her as I could understand what she's going through, and there's no question of 'false charge' when he himself admitted to his intentional 'mistake'. But then even though it was his intention, I don't think I personally could purposely blind someone for life.
I dont think it was right by EITHER of them. Throwing acid into the man's eyes, whether he is unconsciousness or not does not give her a more superior position than him. As per me, they both are a horrid example to humanity and are equally wrong for doing so.
Regardless of what the effect was on her life, and don't misunderstand me, but I doubt she felt better at the end of the day by ruining someone else's life as compared to just simple forgiveness and peace which is EXACTLY what separates us from any other maniacal, vicious, irrational animal. Yes, I agree, not having been in her place affects my perspective but well, it IS my perspective so :P
I think there could be debates for hours long, on what was the right punishment for him because of his lack of conformity and aggravated violence, but I think the 'poor man' (because I pity him) just had absolutely NO control over his emotions or his own life and for a matter of fact, by going to such extreme extents, He just proved it.
Sending him to jail/ the death penalty/ being 'acidified', these all would depend on each country's own and unique way of handling with such cases, and I guess Iran granted her what was within their limits (which doesn't look like they have any).
I disagree with the ruling- though I truly feel bad for the woman; I think it is horrific that the government would allow something like this to happen. Like Shenny said, why not just put him in jail, making sure he doesn't do to anyone else what he did to this poor woman? And throw in some anger management classes while they're at it? Though seriously, I think that this again just proves how violent we are- to make a person unconcious and then blind him in just one eye- I just don't think that would be the best way to handle such a situation.
So much for forward moving and civilization. Where are our ethics? All those countless long lectures on how good mannered we all should be? Not all us go to school but isn't that one of the most elementary lessons that are implanted in our heads?
An eye for an eye. She isn't going to get back her undamaged face by throwing acid back at him,is she? Although, what the woman must have went through is completely unfathomable by us all, but it is not going to work that way. Maybe, the government can sentence him with an adequate punishment for assaulting the woman.
Ahh, I feel for this woman, I really do.. What happened to her is awful, but I think it's foolish and immature for her to literally ask for an eye for an eye retribution, and even MORE foolish that the government actually supported her and went through with blinding the "husband".
I actually believe in the 'eye for an eye' viewpoint, but not in this sense. Rather in the sense that he would have to pay an equal amount.. But then again, whats the price or, punishment in this case, that's going to compensate for Bahrami's lifetime of blindness, or her emotional pain? I guess it's debatable.
Although I have to say that I think this is pretty ridiculous: --"The person who did this deserves to go through the same suffering. Only this way will he understand my pain …" Bahrami was quoted by the Spanish newspaper ABC as saying.--- I don't think he needs to UNDERSTAND her pain, but rather understand that what he did was wrong, and I think prison would bring about that.
Aww what an *** ****. I do agree in this case, but does that mean that in the future this law may be extended even to death? So if I stab someone to death the family of the victim may 'Legally' stab me back? I don't think this is justice. I think they should just give him a very lengthy sentence.
I am horrified by what the man did. But i'm also more horrified at some of the above comments.
here we are, cursing the man and stating that he has done an appalling thing. And then we believe that we should do the same to him. That makes us JUST LIKE HIM.
What he did to the woman was tragic, shocking and inhumane. He's an animal who deserves to be punished. But then if we do the same to him, What about us? where do we stand as animals ?
