Valentine
by Carol Ann Duffy
Not a red rose or a satin heart.
I give you an onion.
It is a moon wrapped in brown paper.
It promises light
like the careful undressing of love.
Here.
It will blind you with tears
like a lover.
It will make your reflection
a wobbling photo of grief.
I am trying to be truthful.
Not a cute card or a kissogram.
I give you an onion.
Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips,
possessive and faithful
as we are,
for as long as we are.
Take it.
Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding-ring,
if you like.
if you like.
Lethal.
Its scent will cling to your fingers,
cling to your knife.
Write your own poem in which you take an unorthodox object and make it a symbol of love. Post your stanzas in the comments section.

Love is like a laptop because..,
It needs to be controlled using intelligence.
If you can't control it, it can cause a breakdown or insanity.
It can be complicated.
Love is like a laptop because...
It is delicate, it needs to be taken care of.
If you can't take care of it, it will break into pieces that cant be put back together.
It can be quite messy.
Love is like a laptop because...
It attracts a lot of attention, people look at it in different ways.
If people start judging incorrectly, it causes problems.
It can be very controversial.
Love is like a laptop because...
It can be slow, it needs patience.
If you don't delete of certain "baggage", it can drag you along.
It can be irritable.
You know I'm different. It's what you love about me. So on this special day. I will give you a token of my love. For your.
I give you a sock.
For me, there is no better token of MY love for you. It IS what you are to me.
My warmth at night. Wrapped around me. Faithful. And in the darkness when I search for you, I know where you'll be. With me. I will do the same. I will cling to you for as long as I can.
Others may try. With their chocolates and roses. But I will not disappear or decompose. It's not complicated. But neither are we. Take it, put it on. And I'll never slip away.
They give them roses
They give them chocolates
They make a reservation at a fancy hotel
Champagne and candles
Ahh, cliche!
To you, my love, I give..
Something exceptional
Something memorable
Something remarkable
Something just for you
I give you a blanket.
My secret hideaway when im sad
Trying to hide my tears
When no one is there to keep me warm
I know the blanket will be there waiting
Something you cannot share with anyone
It belongs to you, and JUST you
You know its yours
It makes you feel secure
To you, my love, I give a blanket
<3
No cliché chocolates, no expected roses
No meaningless cards, no long composes
No my dear, not for your valentine this year
For you deserve something better
Something original and unique
You deserve an apple
Yes, an apple, what more could you want?
It has its soft vibrant exterior though filled with roughage
Much like your ever present compassion
Really an apple it is delicious
You savor every bite of its succulent nectar
That passionate bite rest in your mouth
Literally an apple with its promising seeds of growth
For when we are weak and are aging in years
They testify to the world of our great love
Roses and chocolates shall
Disappear within a day or a week,
But I give you something not as foolish nor as meek.
This Valentines,
For only you,
I give you a tortoise.
It moves slowly, without hurry or haste
Just like our love, no pressure nor worries.
Its shell protects it from wind and rain,
Just like you guard me from any sorrow or pain.
This Valentine’s Day,
I give you a tortoise
our love shall slowly and steadily win the race.
Yes, it may sound unexpected
but Love is not so different
from the blistering blazing burning sun.
Get to close and goggle
it will burn up your eyes,
But a llitle here and there
will warm up your soul deep inside
See, Love is not so different
from the alluring astonishing ardent sun
It may set down and bid us goodbye
So Gracefully, So heavenly
But beware it always comes back
Heating, and exhilirateing us back.
Now you must admit
Love is just like the sun
Its noxious fires can burn your soul
Even so, in the end of the day
Its warmth and fervor is
what keeps us alive.
We would no be without the sun
We would not be without love.
I give you this cheeto.
Its residue shall remain on your fingers until you decide to wash it off;
Like my love.
I give you this cheeto.
It may not be red (it is not flaming hot) but who said conventionality was needed in love?
I give you this cheeto.
Its cheesy aroma will linger with you, a reminder of my loyalty.
I give you this cheeto.
Though you may devour it, it will always be remembered by your digestive system;
(also your heart.)
I give you this cheeto.
It may be high in calories, but I am just as high off love for you too.
I give you this cheeto.
And surely its tang shall linger on your lips, just as well as my kisses.
(Just to clarify, no, I'm not having cheetos right now. I don't even like normal cheetos.)
All excellent stuff! I'm impressed!
Nope, no chocolates.
Nope, no roses.
Nope, no teddies. Close, but no.
I give you a shoe.
Nope, no joke.
They can laugh if they want.
But I assure you my love, with this?
No ones there to tread on your toes.
Its interlacing fingers can be flimsy, yet dependable as ever. I assure you my love, with this? It won't let you go.
Show it off, it's the best feeling.
I promise it will protect you, deep down its warm sole.
But I assure you my love, only if you protect it deep down yours.
What is awkward?
It will be awkward without it.
I assure you my love, trust me. I have the other one.
Roses are red, violets are blue
But this time I’ll be giving you
A mobile to look through
Its connection stays strong until it's far away and out of reach. Just like our love which beams bold to one another depending on the distance are hearts are apart.
Its ring radiates a sense of joy and excitement like the relationship we have held on to for so long.
But you must charge it when needed, or else it will switch off just like a love with no energy.
And please do remember that if you are careless with it, it might break, and the connection you’ve once established may never be brought back. Just like how our overflowing love may wear out if plunged into too much aggression and to blossom no more.
Roaring laughter, gentle scoffs
Mocking looks,quizzical expressions.
I've seen it all.
Ignore them,they know nothing.
And nothing will stop me from presenting you, your rightful gift,
A jumper.
Why a jumper?
Provides warmth, comfort, support at any time of the day,
just like how I want you to feel about my love.
Protects from harsh, piercing cold wind, just like the obstacles life comes with.
I am giving it you, to truly honour this bond we share. Promise me,you'll treasure this as much as I do.
