Desert Island Discs is a long-running BBC Radio 4 programme. It is said by the Guinness Book of Records to be the longest-running music programme in the history of radio. Guests are invited to imagine themselves cast away on a desert island, and to choose five pieces of music, to take with them. At the end of the programme they choose the one piece they regard most highly. They are then asked which book they would take with them; (It is assumed for the sake of discussion that the Works of Shakespeare and religious books are already on the island.)
So, I'd like you to choose five pieces of music and one book to take with you to your desert island and then say why. (The music doesn't have to be in English -- but the book does).
Here’s my choice of music (click on the title to listen):
In making my choice of five pieces of music I had to take into consideration the fact that I’d probably be stuck on the island for a long time. From my experience, even though I love pop and rock songs, I tend to tire of them quickly after repeated listening. Take, Rihanna’s “Umbrella” – after listening to it ten times I was just about ready to ella… ella… ella… elaborately slit both my wrists. So, my selection of music is mostly classical—pieces of music I’ve been listening to for over 15 years. I know I won’t tire of listening to them over and over again.
Ave Maria by Giulio Caccini is not the regular tune sung by people. This Ave Maria was lost for three hundred years and the musical score was only recently discovered. I’m not too fussed about its religious overtones. What I like about the piece is the passion and intensity — it calls to mind all that is beautiful about the human species — it fills me with a sense of the numinous and puts into musical form everything that is ineffable and profound about our world and our existence. Its slow tempo is haunting yet indescribably, heart-achingly, agonisingly rapturous. The soprano voice of the singer is otherworldly — crystal clear and filled with emotion.
My second choice, Air in the G string, was composed by J. S. Bach, one of the greatest musical composers of all time. I choose this piece because it is airy, harmonic and melodic — but also melancholic and dark. It allows me to appreciate how wonderful it is to be alive and how, despite the tragedies of the world, compassion and humanity will always triumph.
Third choice: Pavane pour une infant defunte by Ravel is such an agonizingly beautiful piece. It fills me with a sense of solitude and pain but also with an understanding of the infinite love we are capable of.
Fourth choice: Albinoni’s adagio. This piece allows me to enjoy my own company. When I listen to this I’m glad I’m not in a crowded party or stuck in traffic.
Fifth choice: Ma L’amore no by Eva Nova. This breezy Italian canzone was sung in 1942 and has all the giddy joy of new love and a blithe indifference to the cares and concerns of the world around. I don’t understand the lyrics and I don’t want to either. I’d like to spend a lifetime imagining she is singing about the magic and enchantment of love.
My choice of book – The Works of P. G. Wodehouse: simply because Wodehouse is a master of comedy and a literary genius. He creates a world that is farcical yet delightful. Stuck on a desert island I’d need something that would make me laugh out aloud.
1. Meant to live by Switchfoot. The most important factor in choosing this one is probably that I've been listening to it for more than 2 years on a regular basis, yet I still don't find it annoying.
2.Enjoy the silence by Depeche Mode. Sometimes silence is your best friend. I like the idea that words are mostly a hindrance and an obstacle between people. For some reason the song always gets me hyper.
3.Banana pancakes by Jack Johnson. I'd choose it because if I was stuck on an island, that's the ultimate excuse to not rush trough life and to take stock of what's important, which basically is what the song's all about.
4.Evolution by Korn.I just love the beat, the lyrics...I just love the whole song.
5.Iovano, Iovanke - Bulgarian folk. Because it's slow and not in English :P
As for the book, I'd like to take a survival guide (any one) for the long time I'm going to spend on the island...
Well... Most songs nowadays have a certain part we all wait for, although it maight sound really good at the time and a few times after that, it will certainly be annoying after listening to it abit more. So I would think that if your choosing a song like that... Your not thinking properly.
And trying to come up with a list of songs is quite difficult to me... I'm more into just HEARing the song instead of actually LISTENing to it.
1. Heartbeats by Jose Gonzalez. Its quite a short version of the song, but his acoustics are just so memorable. And i would hope that after listening to it so much i can properly understand his deeply meaningful lyrics.
2. Street Lights by Kanye West. I would think that this song is the most meaningfull of all he's ever made. It slow pace, filled with bright, high pitched notes really get you thinking.
3. Forever Young by Youth Group. Its just such a great song, and one that I've been listening to for quite a few years now, I would think that even on that island i wouldnt get very sick of it.
4. Save Tonight by Eagle-Eye Cherry. Just as meaningfull as any and with a more upbeat tempo, just a great song. But for me more memorable that the song itself is the music video, it may be from the late '90's but I think its pretty great!
5. Apologize by One Republic. Not the one spiced up by Timbaland, the original itself I think is much better. Theres a certain peace and solemnity to it, which I like and jsut can't seem to forget.
As for books... I'm not much of a reader, and to be honest even if I was on a desert island I wouldnt resort to reading (:P). But in all seriousness I would probably go with what Kris said... Just a survival guide or something.
Hahahaha sir, "I was just about ready to ella… ella… ella… elaborately slit both my wrists." - Good one.
My selection is based on rap and techno, rap because there is meaning behind the lyrics, and, techno because it is rythmic beats of pure music.
1) Eminem - Till I collapse. This song is my favourite song, because Eminem is probably the only artist that I feel something in his music, and, when I am on the island, I would like to listen to a song that has an effect on myself, and, in addition, the song talks about never dieng, never backing down, therefore, it would help me regain my balance everytime I feel hopeless.
2) Spencer & Hill - So dance (club mix). This song would help to lighten my mood, since it is so club-like. It is one of the rare techno songs that takes a while to get tired of, and the voice is very different from other techno songs, therefore, this song would be nice to have on an island.
3) Eminem - Never Enough. Eminem never ceases to amaze me in his lyrics, and, just like Till I collapse, this song talks about toughness and how Eminem is waiting for the people who have hated him and dissed him all his life, to sprout and face him, and, in this way, I feel the same when I hear the song, which would help me against my fears on the island.
4) Eminem - No Apologies. In this song, Eminem talks about how he will never forgive those who tried to bring him down, those who insulted him and tried to make him look fake (because he is white), and this song would aid me in remembering my life, so that I do not forget who I hate/love and what inspires me.
5) Egyrap School - Badena Mn Zaman. Aswell as English rap, I also love hearing Egyptian rap, and, in the case of being stranded on an island, this song will never fail to remind me of my country, and of how it makes me feel very patriotic, so that I will not give up.
As for the book that I would take...
There is only one book in this world that effects me in every way imaginable, and will never, ever cease to amaze me, and will always light a path in the darkest of caves. This book is the Qur'an. I will never lose hope, and I will always know where my religion stands, where my beliefs are, and to achieve complete dominance over my spirituality. This is no mere book, it will be my lifeline on the island, if it isn't now.
I am going to choose five songs that make me would make me feel happy and safe when im on an deserted island so they would most likely be thecno.
1 here comes the sun by The Beatles. This song is perfect and is one of those songs which make you feel happy and calm.
2 peace by Depeche Mode. This song would be good on the island because its a song which tells you not to panic and that everything is going to be alright.
3 Porcelain by moby. this song is just amazing it always makes me calm an is a good chillout song.
4 Ave Maria by Giulio Caccini. like mr.Roberts said its an amazing song which is not very well known but when heard will make you feel emotional.I never knew that this very song was lost for 300 years so thats good to know.I was actually very lucky to find this song because I was watching a video about a footall star and this song came on and I instantly fell in love with the song.
5 midnight by dj bar 9. I am almost positive that 2 out of 10 people know this song so you guys should thank me.This song is my personal favourite and i wouldnt be caught dead without it.
As for the book. Treasure islan by Robert louis stevenson or a survival guide.I would mostky pick the survival guide.(good literature wont keep me alive).Just joking.
Wow. This really is a thinker...:p But in my conclusion, the 5 songs I would choose are:
1. Can You Feel It by Jackson 5. This is a very, very old song but still one of my personal favourites because it fills me with a satisfying felicity and reminds me of past times.
2. Amen by Paula Cole. This song has a lot of meaning for me. The artist is trying to say that even though there are is lot of hardship and suffering in life, you shouldn't let that get you down because life is short and that you should find the will to forgive and to be thankful. This song would DEFINITELY help on the island!
3. Summer Jam by DJ Tiesto. The only reason why I've picked this one is that I've been listening to it consistently for god knows how long and it's a really upbeat and simple song that spreads a smile across my face, and I know I'll be needing anything to cheer me up on the island!
4. Dreams by The Corrs. The Corrs are one of my all-time favourite bands because they perform beautifully with the instruments that they play in every one of their songs and I really enjoy listening to instrumental music, especially this one as it has both amazing instrumental music as well as meaningful lyrics!
5. Come Undone by Duran Duran. This is a very relaxing song, even though I don't really like the band! :p Though it's an old song (I really like old songs, they tend to remind me of something that's happened a long time ago and now that I remember it, I feel sad yet somehow happy at the same time!) I enjoy listening to it and haven't gotten tired of it yet!
As for the book, I would choose The Darren Shan Saga by Darren Shan because it was the first book (which turned into a series!) I read and it turned me into the avid reader I consider myself to be today! Or I'd choose the survival guide that everyone else seems to be fond of because I get the feeling there won't be any restaurants or houses there to prevent me from natures next meal! :p
For choosing a song, it would have to be the few that would never get old and different ones that would suit different moods.
Fantasy - Danny Fernandes Such a dreamy song! I've been listening to it for 2 years now and it still gets me excited and singing along to it.
Hotel Room Service - Pitbull I love dirty songs! Haha this one has phrases that I love because of the way they're formed and the context he puts it in.
Freaxxx - Brokencyde This song is an amazing mix between rock, techno, electronica and dance. I listen to it when something annoys me but when I'm still able to dance it off in the most awkward jumping/screaming way.
The last one was a hard choice between Click Click Click - New Kids On The Block and I Hate Everything About You - Three Days Grace. Since Click Click Click has a calming effect similiar to Fantasy, I'd go with I Hate Everything About You. I absolutely LOVE the guitar and this is another emotionally angry song but one where you just listen to the words and violently nod you head.
I'm a bit stuck with the book choosing. All the books I LOVE are collections (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) either in 2's, 4's or 5's! I guess after hard thinking it would be Cherry Heaven because the book is about our world in the future in a way no-one could ever think of. The ideas of the author are astounding and reading it while on the island would, like Mo said, keep my imagination alive and lead me to wonder what IS going on in my hometown.
8th Floor by Regina Spektor: Even though there isn't a recorded version of this song - and the quality isn't AMAZING either - I would definitely take it with me. The song inspires me, motivates me, and I'm sure I would need a lot of motivation in an island (if the pangs of hunger don't work). I love the Russian verses in the middle and the end just blows my mind.
Ampersand by Amanda Palmer: "And I'm not gonna live my life one side of an ampersand, even if I went with you, I'm not the girl you think I am." In my opinion, this is all about being yourself, accepting your amazingness, not letting anyone cover up the true you. I'd take this song with me to help keep my sanity, to not yield to anything that threatens my uniqueness.
Subjects & Matter by A Northern Chorus: Whenever I listen to it, I feel as if I'm in some other world, away from everything. It's like a drug without being a drug - and thankfully one without any lasting effects. After I'm done, I feel relieved and I feel inspired and I feel like I can do ANYTHING I set out to do. "Angels are on their way out," oh yeah.
Bartender by Regina Spektor: ...xD This one is mostly to help me wallow, I guess. Because I would need to succumb to my weariness sooner or later. I find it's the best way to get over my negative moods because a) the lyrics are true, man, and b) it's Regina Spektor. "C'mon bartender, just a little more tender~" It's adorable.
Don't Wake Me Up by The Hush Sound: Another extreme. This is to make me sob hysterically and release all that pent-up frustration and whatnot. I mostly associate this song with nostalgia and it can either make me happy or make me cry. That's probably why I love the song so much. Faiiil. But, yes, it's a beautiful song.
As for books, I would probably take with me the last book in The Princess Diaries series, Ten Out Of Ten. Why? Out of all the books in my house, fantasy, horror, comedy, romance, the series remains my favorite because of one factor: New York. It's my dream to go to New York, a dream that I could to anything to accomplish. I don't care if it's chick-lit (I never have cared about that, I love chick-lit novels!) I don't care that it's not the best literary piece in the world; that book has a part of me in it, a big part of me. And I'd like to keep that part of me when I have nothing else.
Oh gosh, I am so indecisive when it comes to picking only a few musical pieces. There are just too many to choose from!
As for my first choice, I would pick Jam by Michael Jackson, for some reason I was always very drawn to that song, it keeps me upbeat and optimistic, which I think would be good if I were stuck on an island. Plus its a song I never seem to get tired of.
My second choice: I would have to say is Blue and Yellow by The Used. It is just a really sweet song, and it keeps me dazed.
Thirdly, i would choose Dead Letter by Confide, just because when i'm on an angry rampage from being on an island so long i can scream with them.
forth choice: Disenchanted by My Chemical Romance, this song is all about memories, and holding those memories, never letting go of them. Also i absolutely adore his vocal range in this song.
Final choice would be: Tonight we Dance by Rise Against, this is just one of those songs that I listen to over and over again when on long car rides and plane rides. Its one of those songs that inspires me to write music.
As far as books go I would maybe bring A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. Though I did not enjoy the book too much when we were reading it last year for english class, i really do like it now. It made me feel as if i were growing up with the children in the book.
1. Hotel California- The Beatles I don't think there is anyone who doesn't like this song and I just love the song for both its beats and lyrics.
2. Stairway to Heaven- Led Zepplin I love the calm intro and the amazing beats in the bridge, and the guitar solo was just plain awesome.
3.Lost-Micheal Buble There is always something about his voice that always comforts and soothes me. He is one of my fav jazz artists.
4.The phantom of the opera- Sarah Brightman. I just love the dramatic emotion throughout the song and the intensity of it.
5. Fur Elise-Beethoven This is one of my favourite classics, I can never stop listening to it and this is one of the songs that made me fall in love with playing a piano.
The book I would take is my seafood cooking book , so I can have a different dish everday.:p No, I would take Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman as it shows a completely new world and how our world is so well corrupted.
for my songs: 1. i miss you by blink 182: ive been listening to it for years and it's still great. it's a good song to listen to when you're alone.
2. mockingbird by eminem: another great song. even the most successful artists have messed up lives. kind of gets you thinking..
3. hotel room service by pitbull: for whenever i need to dance!
4. boom boom pow by the black eyed peas: just one of those songs i cant stop listnening to
5. memories by david guetta: sometimes music is the only friend you can have, and if im gonna be stuck on an island alone then i might as well enjoy it with some good music :)
as for my book... tough choice! id probably take 'a thousand splendid suns' by khaled hosseini. i actually just finsihed reading this book recently so it's on my mind. if you;re stuck on a deserted island then im sure that this book will remind you that your life isnt so bad! and also i love myra's choice of book. cherry heaven is an extremely unique book
Neiha, Regina Spektor is a great talent. If you like the piano base you might like Fiona Apple and Tori Amos - both Regina and Amanda Palmer seemed to be influenced by them - just as they were influenced by Kate Bush.
Oky there is just way too many to chose from….now if I’m going to be on an island alone I need songs that would make me happy and dance.
1) Sexy Chic- Akon and David Guetta I never get sick of listening to this song and I can’t stop listening to it. It’s a perfect tune which never fails to make me bounce!!!
2) Hotel Room Service- Pitbull and Pussycat dolls
Too good!!!It’s amazing…I will never stop dancing to this song.
3) Takin’ Back My Love-Enrique Iglesias and Ciara
I don’t really like Enrique but I have no idea why this song is stuck in my head. It’s like someone has written down all the lyrics in my head. Wooowww!!!
4) The Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill)-Wyclef Jean, Akon, Niia, and Lil Wayne
I think I’ve been hearing this song every day since it was released in 2007. It’s something I really love to hear whenever I feel lonely.
5) I’m Callin’ You-Outlandish
I am addicted to this song. I don’t really know the lyrics or anything whenever I’m missing someone this is the first song I turn to.
And the book I think it might be The Winner Stand Alone- Paulo Coelho. I haven’t finished reading this book yet but till where I have read I have been dumbfounded!!!I am soo captivated b this book!!!
1.) Kiss the Rain by Yiruma = sad yet beautiful melodies that I never get tired of listening to. It can put me to sleep, calm me down, and get me in a mellow mood.
2.) The Middle by Jimmy Eat World = a song that can always cheer me up, no matter what.
3.) Locomotive by Guns N' Roses = This song has such an amazing rift pattern + the lyrics make a lot of sense.
4.) Rocket Queen by Guns N' Roses = awesome rifts, great oxymoronic lyrics. plus, there's a bonus. (A) ahahaha enough said :P
5.)Careless Whisper by Alex Gaskarth, 3OH!3 and Juliet Simms = a revival of the original WHAM song, this song has a very danceable beat and the lyrics arent half-bad either. :) A lot of people dislike this cover, but I like it.
GWAH THIS IS NOT FAIR. WHY ONLY 5?! :(
And as for the book, well, i'd probably take "The Memoirs of a Geisha". But then again, the Twilight series make awesome bonfire material.
The first song I'd pick would be November Rain by Guns n Roses. One of the main reasons I would choose this particular song would be because it puts me in a sort of musical trance. The lyrics to the song have truth to it and can make me think for a long time. It may be a very typical love song, but it's also quite intense and talks of space in a relationship - something I strongly agree with. Also, i've been listening to this song for about 4 years and I'm still madly in love with it.
My second pick would be Human Nature by Michael Jackson. This song, just like the one above, is one I can relate to. The song has a slow tempo and brings about a rather serene feel. His soft calming voice carries a melody that brings out the calm in me, along with meaningful words.
The third song I would choose to take with me is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. I love this particular song because it varies from a slow soft rock tempo to a faster, louder tempo. It can never fail to bore me as each time I listen to it; I find something that I missed the last time - may it be in the lyrics, or the melody. It's a really deep song and makes me think; the words are pretty complicated, and the tone isn't monotonous or continuous, which makes the song even more interesting.
My fourth choice, would be All summer long by Kid rock. I enjoy listening to this song and i absolutely love singing along to it! It talks of fun; it is light-hearted and reminds me of myself! This song cheers me up at anytime - and if I were on a desert island, I'm sure I would enjoy sitting down and imagining myself drumming to the catchy beat!:D
The fifth song I'd take along with me is Photograph by Nickelback. I would pick this song because when I listen to it, it brings back memories to me. The song has got alot of meaning to it. I can think on it for hours - and it's got a fast tempo along with good guitar work!:)
As for the book, I would pick The Lord of the Rings trilogy. This trilogy fills me up with excitement, mystery and curiosity, and I'm sure it would keep me going for a long time. Everytime I read it, I find something I missed the last time I read it - it's deep and intriguing.:)
Hmm... I hate the fact that I have to choose only 5! There're just so many great songs out there! >.> Anyway, here goes:
1. Comme des enfants by Coeur de pirate. It's soft and low key, and the girl sings with so much pure, blatant emotion, it's heartwarming. It's very simple, but the tune is so beautiful. She sings about the childlike innocence of love and it makes you realise that love is really about simplicity, isn't it?
2. Le Chale from My Brother Nikhil by Shaan. This is a hindi song, not one of the spiced up meaningless ones. :P I LOVE THIS SONG, mainly because of it's relevance to a sister and brothers' relationship, their childhood memories together, and how in times of need, even when everyone turns their back, they will never let go of each other. In the movie the brother is an AIDS patient, thus the connection. I think it's one of the best movies I have watched, and when deserted on an island I would love to be reminded of my brother and sisters' love for me, of which I know there is plenty. :)
3. Papi Chulo by Lorna & La Factoria. Why? Just because. Haha! This song is upbeat and crazy, and I love it! I don't get the lyrics apart from the 'Papi Chulo' bit, but oh well! Deserted on an island, bored out of my wits, I would definitely appreciate dancing to these beats.
4. Sunday Best by Augustana! I really like this song! I like the music, the mood, the words, everything! And I love singing along to it, :)
5. Hey There Delilah by Plain White T's. Because I'm a girl and every girl wishes she was Delilah and had a Tom Higgenson writing her a song like this one. The words are vulnerable but simple, it's their boyish charm that really gets to me. On a pleasant white sand island, overlooking an ocean of clear blue waters, sitting under a coconut tree, listening to this song and thinking of that special someone. *siiiigh* I'm so full of clichés, I know. :)
This is probably the toughest question I’ve come across. Music is one of the most important aspects of my life; what I listen to depends on how I feel. On a deserted island, I’m most probable to feel many different moods, but whatever it is, I need music that does not depress me. [definitely not emo rock songs, or else I would ella..ella..ella..elaborately slit my wrists ;) hahaha good one Sir (Y) ]
Charles Clouser – Hello Zepp
There is a certain intensity about this song that I cannot get over. It has quite a dark and foreboding tune to it, and can transport me into a different world altogether. When I was writing the first paragraph of the Universe assignment, I just sat on my chair, eyes closed, and listened to this song repeatedly on full volume. I wouldn’t call it a song, more of a ‘moving’ instrumental. Incidentally, it was used as the theme of Saw.
DJ Tiesto – Adagio for Strings
Ahh, Tiesto’s music is something I will never tire off. His beats, tunes, have such depths to them. It was difficult to choose, but this song is probably one of my favourite and most listened-to Tiesto songs. The progression is this song is beautiful- something about it puts you into a trance. [which is why it’s considered ‘Trance’ =P ] oh and Elements of Life. Love that too.
Matt and Kim – Daylight
This is such a bright and uplifting song, it makes me smile. At first, I found it sickeningly happy. But if I am stranded on an island, this is sure to lift my spirits.“’cause in the daylight anywhere feels like home"
Fatboyslim – Right Here Right Now
The tune in this song is mesmerising. Again, I love the progression- listening to this sort of music puts me in another realm.
Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven
I guess one of the main reasons I love this song is because I can play it =P on the guitar I mean. Well, mainly the intro =/ So while I’m sitting, lost, on a deserted island, I can listen to this song, and just imagine myself with my beloved guitar. (since I’m guessing I’m not allowed to have it with me?)
I am a great fan of reading; one of the many passions of life :P I had to think way too much for this one. Jodi Picoult – My Sister’s Keeper was one of the most beautiful books I have ever read, a book I would never tire off. Each time I read the book, I cried. Same goes for Nicholas Sparks – A Walk To Remember. But in the end, I have decided on Chetan Bhagat – 2 States. The humour in the book is extensive, and the topics covered are sure to keep you laughing for hours; which is exactly what I would need on a deserted island. Plus, the cultural references in the book are ones I can relate to, and I understand a lot of the situations present. Very cliché, which makes it all the more entertaining.
Video for Right Here Right Now. Evolution, for whoever believes in it. Such a cool video, it goes with the song =P See, this is probably what I'd be thinking about while sitting on a deserted island.
Sir, if you're listening to Adagio for Strigns - the first minute is quite techno-ey and might get on your nerves :P but it's the riff that starts around 01:25 that I'm in love with.
Mehvash, I'm familiar with Tiesto's "Adagio for Srings." Great beat - but he's lifted it off William Orbit's album "Pieces in a modern style" - which in turn was lifted from the original classical piece by Samuel Barber: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkObnNQCMtM
If I could choose one more song to take with me to my desert island I'd take Barber's "Adagio for strings."
However, Tiesto does a great job with the techno beats and his version sounds absolutely brilliant in a night club :)
1.Nothing else matters by Metallica. This song has such amazing lyrics and the guitarwork is superb, regarded by most as one of their best songs, which i think is absolutely true.
2.A tout le monde (Set me free) by Megadeth Contrary to popular to belief, this song is not about suicide... its about when someone dies very tragically there are those certain things that they want to say to the their loved ones, this song represents that.
3.Aesthetics of Hate by Machine Head Everyone needs to take out their anger on "something" and this song is GREAT for that, riffing is brilliant, amazing solo. If you dont take your anger out on something, you'll go crazy... :P
4.Are you dead yet? by Children on Bodom Obviosly you will get sick of listening to the same songs over and over again, but I never get sick of this song! Alexi Laiho is amazing! And they have something that not many metal bands have, a keyboardist which is the coup de grace to their music.
5.Snuff by Slipknot This song just calms you down, no matter what your mood is, it calms you down. The lyrics are good to. XD
The book would be, as most people said would be a survival guide :D
So many have chosen a survival guide as the book they'd take with them - little realising the enormous import and significance of chosing one book out of the millions and millions out there.
As First Language students I am fairly disappointed that more thought wasn't spent on this question (although, I quite see thought has been given to the music).
On an island, that one book would be your friend for a long, long, LONG time. And somehow, a "survival guide" just doesn't cut it. The aesthetic/philosophic point is being missed here.
Oh, okay.. Sorry! Now that I reflect upon it a little more, I would like taking The Five People You Meet In Heaven by Mitch Albom. It's not a very long book, about 200 pages or so, but every page is part of a beautiful journey through what one man believed is Heaven. It's a guess, a wish, in some ways for people who feel unimportant here on Earth to realize, finally, how much they mattered and how they were loved. It portrays love, compassion and forgiveness, of letting go not only for the sake of others but also for being at peace with your own conscience. It's heartfelt earnestness is why I love it, and why I would choose to have it with me if I were deserted on an island.
Personally, I don't see anything wrong with having a survival guide for a long period of time, but, I do get what you are trying to point out, sir.
There are too many books, too many writers, too many things to choose from, and, if religious books are already on the island, what more could I possibly need? If I really think about it, I would love to learn a new language that deciphers shapes, and could answer even geometrically-complicated scientifical dilemas, so the book will have to be an entire, proven guide to learn sacred geometry.
On the other hand, I could ask for the largest dictionary in the world, and the latest, so I can learn them all, and aswell as expanding my vocabulary, I will be expanding my memory and my thoughts.
In addition, I could ask for the thickest, most ancient book of Philosophy, genuinely approved (NO FAKE UFO NONSENSE) by old Philosophers. This book will be the ultimate challenge to unlock the door to spirituality, for I would be able to see things I would never have been able to see before, and, look at the world in a whole new light. It would be like a million thunks in one.
Magnifying this addition, I could take the biggest, most genuine, most informative historical book in the world, because in order to understand the present, it is compulsory to understand the past, but, since most historical books are biased nowadays, I would only take one that is mostly genuine, and that actually shows every win and defeat of every country.
So you see, Mr Roberts, I could go on endlessly, for my choice of books are infinite, but, the most practical thing I can conclude with is a survival book, something that can help me in my situation, but, again, only half of me says so, while the other half is still having civil war trying to choose from the books above.
Truthfully, I cannot choose one book (if religious books are already on the island), since there is so much information to be absorbed, and so much knowledge to comprehend, that one book will never suffice, no matter how long the period of time stretched. The choice of one book is, for me, one of the hardest questions that can ever be spoken.
Well if I cant take a survival guide I would have to "Double Cross" by James Patterson, its certainly not the biggest book, lasting just over 300 pages. Its a triller that I could not put down, so I believe that this book would keep me "entertained" in an island... this novel makes for sleepless nights. XD
Up till now I haven't found a book which I can read twice in a row, without getting bored out of my mind the second time. A survival guide would actually be my perfect book as it's a representation of logic and help in a place where I won't find much of either. Also in a situation where I'd have no one to talk to, a book giving instructions to me would be the closest to a conversation I'll probably get... unless I develop a second personality and start talking to myself...
But if I had to choose a book, I'd take The little prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It's really short, but it's filled with so much meaning it keeps you busy thinking about all of the things discussed in the book (plus it has pictures XD). I'm going to get bored of it pretty fast, but it also has sentimental value for me, so it'd still be worth something.
1.Somebody’s me by Enrique Iglesias I chose this song because the song is just filled with so much feeling and emotion and makes me feel like someone is always there for me. This song is just so sensual it touches your heart so gently! it makes me cry! 2.Kiss me thru the phone by Soulja boy I’ m obsessed with all his songs and simply enjoy listening to his music. I listen to it again and again and don’t seem to get bored of it! 3.If I were a boy by Beyonce I am a huge Beyonce fan and I love all of her music because every piece of music she composes Has so meaning to it. This song is my all time favorite and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of listening to it. 4.Mad by Ne-Yo I listen to this song every night and it’s a very touching and beautiful song! His voice is amazing and I think with this song he outdid himself. 5.Sexy chic by Akon and David guetta I am in love with this song!! It makes me wanna dance no matter where I am!! The beat is amazing in this song and it is very rejuvenating. If I was stranded on an island than I would definitely want my collection of Agatha Christie novels. I simply enjoy how she portrays all her characters . I like the ‘who done its’ and I cand keep reading it over and over again even if I know who did it! One novel I specifically liked was the cat among the pigeons – a work of detective fiction. At the start of the Summer Term at Meadowbank School for Girls, there is no reason for Miss Bulstrode, the popular but aging Headmistress, to believe that the challenges facing her will be more than the occasional irate or inebriated parent. She scarcely listens when Mrs Upjohn, a parent, recognizes someone that she sees from her wartime days in the intelligence service. But there is a killer at the school who does not wait long to strike …
(I picked these songs because they're some of the songs I just never get tired of listening to)
*Somewhere over the rainbow - Alesin Debison I chose this song because its the type of song that just makes you feel calm and relaxed, Alesin Debison's voice also gives out a very joyful feel to the song. Its the perfect song to listen to when your frustrated or full of rage, it'll calm you down for sure :p.
*Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley What I love about Jeff Buckley's version is the emotion he puts into the song, everytime I listen to this song I get a feeling of remorse (I dont know why) I guess its just how he sings it. The amount of emotion he puts into the song through his voice.
*Summertime - Billie Holiday This is one of my favorite songs because there's something about Billie Holiday's voice that just make you smile. Her voice is just so mellow, enough to lull you to sleep.
*Tiny Dancer - Elton John This song's just beautiful the melody, the lyrics, everything about it is just awesome.
*Sleepwalking past hope - H.I.M
I love this song because of the transition (the intro's first part is just piano playing and then the guitar come in and then the drums and it gives out such a powerful feel, that would just make you want to listen to the song again and again. It's the perfect intro. The song also has very "calm" parts where Ville's voice just goes deeper than it usually is then it suddenly goes loud and insane, it's just amazing how perfect the transition is.), the lyrics, the solo and the deathly feel of Ville Valo's voice.
As for the book I pick Dracula written by Bram Stoker. This for me, is just immortal. I never get tired of reading it. I love how he depicted the characters in the book. How he wrote the novel was very interesting since he wrote it in logs and diary entries, makes it seem more realistic.
1)Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson: I NEVER get tired of this song! R.I.P MJ
2) Bloodline by Slayer: It is a VERY heavy song and really isolates me from the rest of the world. Hunger, pain, sadness are just minor setbacks when I listen to this song! Just keeps me headbanging! =)
3) The trooper by Iron Maiden: It is the FIRST heavy metal song I ever heard (aged six) and since then, I have been hooked
4) The four seasons by Vivaldi: I love classical music and this is a masterpiece! It captures SO MANY MOODS, Emotions, Thoughts. Sheer Magnificence
5) Laid to Rest by Lamb of God: Powerful vocals that promotes independence while accepting life and its bitter realities!
Book: The Inscrutable Americans by Anurag Mathur
Reason: HILARIOUS!!! Every page gathers a bakset of laughs!

Mo, it is assumed for the sake of discussion that religious books will already be on the island.
Hmm...
Most likely a survival book, but, maybe a fantasy book to keep my imagination wild, like Eragon or The Gift.
Wow. This really is a thinker...:p
But in my conclusion, the 5 songs I would choose are:
from *being* natures next meal
For choosing a song, it would have to be the few that would never get old and different ones that would suit different moods.
Fantasy - Danny Fernandes
Such a dreamy song! I've been listening to it for 2 years now and it still gets me excited and singing along to it.
Hotel Room Service - Pitbull
I love dirty songs! Haha this one has phrases that I love because of the way they're formed and the context he puts it in.
Freaxxx - Brokencyde
This song is an amazing mix between rock, techno, electronica and dance.
*your
Right, time to pull out my iTunes gallery.
1. Hotel California- The Beatles
I don't think there is anyone who doesn't like this song and I just love the song for both its beats and lyrics.
2. Stairway to Heaven- Led Zepplin
I love the calm intro and the amazing beats in the bridge, and the guitar solo was just plain awesome.
3.Lost-Micheal Buble
There is always something about his voice that always comforts and soothes me. He is one of my fav jazz artists.
4.The phantom of the opera- Sarah Brightman. I just love the dramatic emotion throughout the song and the intensity of it.
5. Fur Elise-Beethoven
This is one of my favourite classics, I can never stop listening to it and this is one of the songs that made me fall in love with playing a piano.
The book I would take is my seafood cooking book , so I can have a different dish everday.:p No, I would take Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman as it shows a completely new world and how our world is so well corrupted.
Shweta,
It was The Eagles who sang "Hotel California." :)
for my songs:
1. i miss you by blink 182: ive been listening to it for years and it's still great. it's a good song to listen to when you're alone.
2. mockingbird by eminem: another great song. even the most successful artists have messed up lives. kind of gets you thinking..
3. hotel room service by pitbull: for whenever i need to dance!
4. boom boom pow by the black eyed peas: just one of those songs i cant stop listnening to
5. memories by david guetta: sometimes music is the only friend you can have, and if im gonna be stuck on an island alone then i might as well enjoy it with some good music :)
as for my book... tough choice! id probably take 'a thousand splendid suns' by khaled hosseini. i actually just finsihed reading this book recently so it's on my mind. if you;re stuck on a deserted island then im sure that this book will remind you that your life isnt so bad!
and also i love myra's choice of book. cherry heaven is an extremely unique book
Neiha,
Regina Spektor is a great talent. If you like the piano base you might like Fiona Apple and Tori Amos - both Regina and Amanda Palmer seemed to be influenced by them - just as they were influenced by Kate Bush.
Kris, enjoyed banana pancakes.
(Still listening to the other choices).
aaa...Sorry sir..That was a mistake. I wasn't thinking properlly. So correction Hotel California- The Eagles
Okay. DAMN THIS WAS HARD :/ hmm well..
:P
Mr. Roberts,
Definitely will be checking those two out. Thank you!
Oh bdw, happy birthday to me ;) xD
Happy Birthday Tannya!
btw, "Human Nature" is my favorite MJ song :)
Thank you Mr.Roberts!:D it's mine as well haha :)
Oh,and the book..
Survival guide FTW! :)
Oh, sir, lol I have a warning bout Rocket Queen :) the instrumental part may have erm, smt unexpected in it..so, just in case lol. (A)
This is probably the toughest question I’ve come across.

Such a cool video, it goes with the song =P
See, this is probably what I'd be thinking about while sitting on a deserted island.

Sir, if you're listening to Adagio for Strigns - the first minute is quite techno-ey and might get on your nerves :P but it's the riff that starts around 01:25 that I'm in love with.
Mehvash,
I'm familiar with Tiesto's "Adagio for Srings." Great beat - but he's lifted it off William Orbit's album "Pieces in a modern style" - which in turn was lifted from the original classical piece by Samuel Barber: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkObnNQCMtM
If I could choose one more song to take with me to my desert island I'd take Barber's "Adagio for strings."
However, Tiesto does a great job with the techno beats and his version sounds absolutely brilliant in a night club :)
The 5 songs I would pick are:
1.Nothing else matters by Metallica.
This song has such amazing lyrics and the guitarwork is superb, regarded by most as one of their best songs, which i think is absolutely true.
2.A tout le monde (Set me free) by Megadeth
Contrary to popular to belief, this song is not about suicide... its about when someone dies very tragically there are those certain things that they want to say to the their loved ones, this song represents that.
3.Aesthetics of Hate by Machine Head
Everyone needs to take out their anger on "something" and this song is GREAT for that, riffing is brilliant, amazing solo. If you dont take your anger out on something, you'll go crazy... :P
4.Are you dead yet? by Children on Bodom
Obviosly you will get sick of listening to the same songs over and over again, but I never get sick of this song! Alexi Laiho is amazing! And they have something that not many metal bands have, a keyboardist which is the coup de grace to their music.
5.Snuff by Slipknot
This song just calms you down, no matter what your mood is, it calms you down.
The aesthetic/philosophic point is being missed here.
....D: But my novel had significance ;;
Oh, okay..
Mr Roberts,
Personally, I don't see anything wrong with having a survival guide for a long period of time, but, I do get what you are trying to point out, sir.
1.Somebody’s me by Enrique Iglesias
I chose this song because the song is just filled with so much feeling and emotion and makes me feel like someone is always there for me. This song is just so sensual it touches your heart so gently!
it makes me cry!
2.Kiss me thru the phone by Soulja boy
I’ m obsessed with all his songs and simply enjoy listening to his music. I listen to it again and again and don’t seem to get bored of it!
3.If I were a boy by Beyonce
I am a huge Beyonce fan and I love all of her music because every piece of music she composes
Has so meaning to it. This song is my all time favorite and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of listening to it.
4.Mad by Ne-Yo
I listen to this song every night and it’s a very touching and beautiful song!
His voice is amazing and I think with this song he outdid himself.
5.Sexy chic by Akon and David guetta
I am in love with this song!!
(I picked these songs because they're some of the songs I just never get tired of listening to)
*Somewhere over the rainbow - Alesin Debison
I chose this song because its the type of song that just makes you feel calm and relaxed, Alesin Debison's voice also gives out a very joyful feel to the song. Its the perfect song to listen to when your frustrated or full of rage, it'll calm you down for sure :p.
*Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
What I love about Jeff Buckley's version is the emotion he puts into the song, everytime I listen to this song I get a feeling of remorse (I dont know why) I guess its just how he sings it. The amount of emotion he puts into the song through his voice.
*Summertime - Billie Holiday
This is one of my favorite songs because there's something about Billie Holiday's voice that just make you smile. Her voice is just so mellow, enough to lull you to sleep.
*Tiny Dancer - Elton John
This song's just beautiful the melody, the lyrics, everything about it is just awesome.
How he wrote the novel was very interesting since he wrote it in logs and diary entries, makes it seem more realistic.
nikol :)
My music:
1)Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson:
I NEVER get tired of this song!
