Thunks - 11

A Thunk is a beguilingly simple-looking question about everyday things that stops you in your tracks and helps you start to look at the world in a whole new light.

Thunk 11:

Is NOT going fishing a hobby?

Anything that can be done at a frequent basis, and that gives self-satisfaction or amusement, and creates an addiction to that particular person (not like smoking), is called a hobby, in my opinion, so fishing can be considered as a hobby.

Mr. Roberts said...

Mo,
The thunk is whether "not" going fishing is a hobby.

Unknown said...

It Took Me A While To Understand It...

Well Hobby Is Something You Like To Do And You Do It Frequently E.g Playing Football 3 Times A Week

Well " " NOT " Going Fishing Is A Hobby " Uhhhh Noooooo !! E.g I Don't Want To Go Fishing Cause Im Not Able To Take Out Time And Im Busy In Other Stuff ! So Not Going Fishing Wouldn't Be A Hobby

^^ Did It Sound Correct ^o)

Unknown said...

Nope. If I choose NOT to go the gym and NOT workout then that can NOT be classified as a hobby.

A hobby is something you do, and apply yourself to it mentally or physically.

When I say my hobby is not do something then thats just procastrinating or slacking not a hobby (weren't hobbies made to stop people slacking ?).

So Not going fishing is not a hobby it's just you not going fishing, much like us right now.

Nadine said...

I don't think so, because if so, then anything we choose not to do - drawing, playing music, etc, - would make the decision not to do something a hobby as well.
I think going fishing is a hobby. Not going fishing is just a decision.

Payam H.D said...

Wow. Weird thunk!:p

But I would have to say that it isn't a hobby to not go fishing because a hobby is something you DO that gives you entertainment and pleasure, so NOT DOING it is not a hobby.

Yusra Shah said...

These thunk’s just keep getting weirder.

oKy!!!! NOT going fishing is not a hobby..i mean we don’t go around telling people that my hobby is NOT to go fishing…..

And I don’t go fishing because I don’t like fishing not because NOT going fishing is my hobby.

Sonal.Vohra said...

If you say not going fishing is a hobby, what about not playing beach soccer or anything else? If you say a hobby is something you can do and not only choose to do, then what about when someones says : "I 'can' 'not' go fishing and its My hobby to do so"? It actually can be a hobby depending on the person who says it. If that person can but doesnt go fishing then yes, it is a hobby but if that person cannot and doesnt go fishing then I dont think it is a hobby.

neineisharie said...

...whoa, okay, had to read it a couple of times to get that.

Um, not going fishing means that, well, you're not doing anything. And when it comes to hobbies, you generally do something. So...if you're not going fishing so that can't exactly be a hobby...can it?

I don't know, this is a very confusing thunk.

Mehvash:] said...

What is a hobby? Generally an act you like and enjoy performing, or in other words, doing. Hypothetically speaking- let’s say I do not like fishing. Well, that’s that. It can’t be classified as a hobby, since I don’t enjoy NOT going fishing. It isn’t something I can ‘do’.
In my spare time, where I would generally be acting upon one of my hobbies [for example, reading] I would not be venting out my hatred for fishing or of ‘not going fishing’ since I really do have better ways to go by my day. I’m not doing anything by not going fishing; I’m just not fishing.

Mo Nour El Din said...

Haha, my bad.

Anyway, if doing something frquently is a hobby, then not going fishing, frequently, can be classified as a hobby, in a philosophical sense. You exclude all thoughts of fishing, since it is something you rarely do, but you are frequently excluding the thoughts that are related to fishing, therefore, you have created a mental hobby of exclusion. This sense of thought-exclusion can be labelled to everything, in the materialistic world, because the barriers of our minds enables us to include/exclude thoughts or ideas, through our spiritual world, so this is similar to a hobby, mainly because it is frequent.

Your mind is constantly shifting between two worlds, materialistic-wise and spiritual-wise. Spiritual-wise is the world of mental capacity and things that do not collabrate with the materialistic-wise world, and your mind can be said to have a mind of its own. When you exclude all thoughts of fishing, it is a constant exclusion from the spiritual world, therefore, you are involuntarily creating your own hobby, one that exists mentally, because hobbies are not always something we can see and touch, therefore existing in the materialistic world, since it is related to senses and emotions.

Directly speaking, yes, it is a hobby to not go fishing, because, voluntarily or involuntarily, you are creating self-satisfaction in your mind with the exclusion of all thoughts to do with fishing, so a hobby is formed in this manner. Even though I would'nt call it a hobby (there is a whole new concept since it exists mentally), it can be classified as a hobby, since you are constantly blocking thoughts, at a frequent basis, and hobbies are frequently done.

Hobbies can exist in your head, all you have to do is pull yourself away from the materialistic world, therefore entering the spiritual world, by a very simple method. Imagine.

I dont know really umm a hobby is something you enjoy doing and that you do it regulary so NOT going fishing CAN be a hobby but then that means everything you dont do can be a hobby aswell so its quite confusing this thunk :P

Unknown said...

i actually do think its a hobby. cause you are doing something by NOT going fishing, and doing something that you enjoy or love is a hobby right? so if you love to not go fishing then well it can be considered a hobby :P

Sajid said...

No, not going fishing cannot be categorised as a hobby as it simply isn't an activity but instead the avoidance of an activity. Assuming you enjoy reading and decide to avoid going fishing so that you can use the time to read a novel, then reading would have to be considered to be your hobby, not your simple decision to avoid going fishing. Honestly Mr. Roberts, with all due respect, this is probably the most pointless thunk I've come across. Considering the fact that a thunk is supposed to help us think and(as you always post) ''start to look at the world in a whole new light'', this thunk really doesn't seem to fulfill it's purpose.

Well i guess if you are speaking technical terms, not fishing is a hobby because you are doing something by avoiding to do something.

memomadness69 said...

Mr. Roberts, do these thunks have a right or wrong answer?

Well if you do enjoy not going fishing, I suppose it could be a hobby. A hobby is what you enjoy doing in your leisure time. If you enjoy not going fishing during your leisure time, then why not?

Mr. Roberts said...

^ Myriam,
Thunks don't have a right or wrong answer.

Tannya D said...

Wow, this thunk really made me think. :P
Not going fishing isn't really a hobby, its just something you decide not to do. Like not reading, or not playing the guitar. Those are just personal opinions and decisions on what one likes to do.
However, if you while away your time giving it some thought - as in "I definitely don't go fishing, and that interests me and makes me happy", then well it could be considered a hobby. Because, as some above me have stated, something you enjoy doing in your leisure time is a hobby :). But if you never give it thought - and its never occurred to you that you don't go fishing - that's not a hobby, thats just something you don't do.

Mr. Roberts said...

Sajid,
It's not very nice to criticise your teacher on his own blog. I submit to you that this thunk does make one think. If it didn't make you do it - then I can only draw your attention to Mo and Nishika and Tannya's comments.

NOT going fishing is NOT a hobby.A hobby is something you do to pass your time and you enjoy doing it.You do not pass your time by NOT going fishing but if you DID go fishing to pass your time then that would be a hobby.

Well, Yes. If your not going fishing and chose to do something else or if you enjoy just sitting idle at home and not doing anything at all. If you enjoy doing that then yes, I guess its a hobby.

Unknown said...

Well, it depends on what you do in the time span that you're NOT going fishing!
A hobby is something you enjoy and do frequently in your free time, and if sitting around thinking or reading or just staying indoors is what someone prefers, then ofcourse it can be a hobby to them.
There are endless possibilities to what you could be doing when you're NOT fishing!

EliqaShaza said...

Yea. This is a really confusing thunk actually. But this is how i see it. A hobby is something that a person likes doing. If the person enjoys not fishing then it becomes a hobby. I have no idea if that makes sense :S
But that would be my opinion x

Amol said...

Well this is a weird one.
Firstly a hobby is something you do on a regular or frequently but not going fishing is not a hobby because you are not physically taking part in the activity or doing it. Not going fishing is just a decision you would probably make once or twice.
A hobby is different from a decision, so not going fishing is not a hobby.

Unknown said...

Well, doing something classifies as a hobby, so not doing something will not be a hobby too. Things like drawing, playing sports, playing music and fishing constitute a hobby. Not doing it, is not!

Master Rahul said...

I think fishing could be classed as an hobby but also could be classed as a job.

People who go fishing for a living, meaning who sell the fish when they catch them, I'm guessing they would consider it a chore however people who go fishing because they enjoy it could probably class it as one of their hobbies.

Conclusion: going fishing for a living is not doing a hobby for a living but going fishing for leisure, pleasure, thrill etc could be a hobby.

Nnamdi said...

well yes going fishing definetly is a hobby.A hobby is something that a paticular person finds joy in doing,so if the person engoys not going fishing on a regular basis, then i guess he found a hobby.

Nnamdi said...

i made a slight error.I meant to say.well yes not going fishing is definetly a hobby.

Well, I've come across this thunk like a hundred times, and tbh, I still havent come up with what I deem as a decent answer.

I usually dont post stuff until I think of a proper answer, but this thunk just bugs me by being there, taunting me for not posting a comment just yet.

(Man, the comic book thunk is still unanswered, yet it does not haunt me as much) :s

May I ask though, by "not fishing" does it mean that we are just sitting idly, or doing something else like reading or sketching?

I for one, do not like fishing, and see it as a boring activity. Not fishing is, I suppose, NOT a hobby, since a hobby has to involve SOMETHING done.

NOT fishing is simply a decision to NOT partake in this tedious activity.

Batul Bhatri said...

I really dont think that 'not' going fishing is a hobby. It just becomes something you dont do, I wouldnt classify not doing something as a hobby. And I personally can't imagine someone telling me, "My hoobies are not going fishing and not reading."

Unknown said...

I agree with nadine :D

Unknown said...

Ofcourse not going fishing is NOT a hobby!
Not deciding to do something is a personal decision taken by an individual.
As stated above, a hobby is something u like to do and enjoy spending your time with. therefore NOT fishing cannot be stated as a hobby.

Unknown said...

Personally i think NOT going fishing is NOT a hobby cause then if you didnt do anyting at all they could be called hobbies if you dont do them. So if you dont go fishing thats a decision that you make.
A hobby is something that you do for pleasure and for excitment and satisfaction.

Hope that makes sense :)

Yoan Aher said...

I think that "not" going fishing is not a hobby, because a hobbly is something you you that you are interested in and that you spend time on, and since not going fishing means you dont spend time on it, it means that its not a hobby.

wow, this was hard, took me ages to understand it. :P

Mo Nour El Din said...

Dylan,

Don't you create satisfaction when you "decide" not to go fishing? Don't you create pleasure when you "decide" not to go fishing? Don't you create excitement when you "decide" not to go fishing?

If you don't realise, then your mind certainly does, because, involuntarily, you are making it a habit to ignore/expel/exclude thoughts to do with fishing, therefore, this habit becomes a hobby, because your mind's mind is gaining the satisfaction, the pleasure and the excitement by not doing it.

And in answer to everyone else who said "then everything you don't do can become a hobby", this is abolutely true, because, if you concentrate on the fact that your mind is always active, is always present, is always awake and interactive with your body, so why is it so hard for you to understand that your mind can also interact with itself? Do you not see that by disagreeing to do something, you are constantly agreeing not to do it, so, can't that be classified as a hobby?

If not, why? Why do you think that it is not a hobby? "Because everything you don't do is a hobby", exactly, how is that so hard to accept? Many people forget they have a dominant organ. Many people forget that it is their brain that is controlling them, that it is their brain that calculates distances, that it is their brain their soul is bound to obey.

In the most simplest of words, everything you dont do can be classified as a hobby, because, internally, involuntarily, your brain is constantly choosing one option out of dozens, and this choosing has to be kept as a constant. Think of it in a formula.

Hobby(H)=Constant(K)/Choice(C)

(K)=(C)^2

There is always a constant, in every action that we choose to do, and, in this manner, a hobby is created. You divide the constant by the number of choices you make, resulting in a hobby being formed, which is the definition for CONSTANTLY CHOOSING not to do something. It all fits in perfectly.

So, everything that we don't do can be said to be a hobby, because your brain controls you, and you cannot control your brain, you cannot define why the brain is thinking, or why the brain does not communicate to you. The human brain is a living thing, and, no-one knows what it is capable of, and, the human brain can actually be said to have a brain of its own, and, this brain is undetectable. It is a very scary thought, for you can collapse at a single thought from your brain, to its brain.

Everything said here is only theoretical, and I have made this up.

Mo Nour El Din said...

By "you", I mean your soul and conciousness.

Mo Nour El Din said...

A decision is something that outrules this constant, and can be seen in something like this:-

Decision(D)=Choice(C)

There is no constant, so this decision is permanently established, but, a decision can, ultimately, create a hobby, so that decision branches out to form multiple hobbies, and, a decision can be defined as many hobbies. A decision is not different from a hobby, it is merely the beginning of a long chain of hobbies, where a constant is placed.

Unknown said...

I don't think so because fishing could be considered as a hobby, yet when you choose not to go fishing and rather do something else isn't really calling it a hobby. A hobby is something you do not "NOT" do.

Unknown said...

Umm no I dont think it would count, a hobby is something you do in your spare time. And not doing anything is wasting your spare time.

Aliza said...

ofcourse it's a hobby. a hobby is any activity you like to do in your spare time and that you enjoy. there are thousands of people who like fishing and wait for holidays to spend time fishing. so how come there is even a question that doubts fishing being a hobby?

Unknown said...

Not going fishing is not a hobby, Its just a decision!

Unknown said...

Hobby is an interesting activity that we undertake to keep ourself occupied in our spare time.
'Not' going for fishing will definitely not be considered a hobby because you are simply just not doing something and carrying on with your daily life. Just like eating three meals a day is not a hobby, just a way of continuing with the daily life.

Mona. said...

I had to read it 12 times to understand & think about it!
I dont think its a hobby, how can NOT doing something be a hobby??
I guess its just a choice,it cant be a hobby not to do something! =S
