"When you comb your hair is it--"

...Wow. I mean...wow. I wasn't expecting that one at all, haha.

Onto my response. It all depends on perspective and how much importance you pin on your appearance, I suppose. Sure, like any other girl I do care about my appearance but I like my hair the way it is - curly, slightly out of control and unmanageable. I do brush/comb, my hair, don't get me wrong, but just a couple of strokes and I'm done.

But enough about my grooming habits. I'm an artist - self proclaimed, at least - and in my opinion, almost everything is an art!

So why can't hairbrushing be an art as well?

Surely, some people take hairbrushing very seriously and they would not mind spending hours running the brush through their hair to get it just right. Don't artists do the same with their sketches, paintings and sculptures? We spend ages trying to perfect our projects.

You have all sorts of people that specialize in various mediums. Clay, paint, charcoal, make-up etc.

So why not hair? :/

Leah Simon said...

Why not? If you were to define art, it is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions. Being part of a school like Winchester, we all know that the reason the girl's washrooms are jam packed between lessons is because nearly 90% of the female population in school want to check their hair. And if arranging their hair appeals to them then why can't hair brushing be considered an art?

As Neiha says, different people specialize in various mediums. And since there are no restrictions to the limits of art, hair brushing can surely be considered one.

Unknown said...

Wow!!
This question really did make me stop and think....I never asked myself this..but now I come to think of it..it is!!

Art is a way of pouring out your emotions and if you think about it so is hair brushing. When not in mood people tend to just give their hair a few strokes but when they are in a good mood they comb it with alot of care.

So I think hair brushing is a form of art.

..Well, when you really come to think of it, it is an art.

Think about haidressers ... isn't their work a form of art? I am positive that not many of us can achieve what they can.
And what about us? We all have different styles of combing our hair.

I completely agree with Leah, that there are no restrictions as to what can be considered appealing and a form of art. There was once this artist, who simply splashed different coloured paints on a piece of canvas, and called it 'Modern Art'. People loved it.

This justifies that even simple things can be looked upon as art.

To answer this question, I think that first we must answer another question. What is considered art?

I guess we can apply the much used phrase "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" for this case too. The views on art change from year to year, country to country and especially from person to person.

Is it not considered a form of art in Japan to make the perfect bow of ramen? If that is seen as art why shouldn't combing your hair be given the same status?

But it wouldn't do the question justice to answer with a simple yes or no. Everyone sees things in their own way, why should we try to convince them to see things our way?

Art : the expression of creative skill in a visual form

canvas : cloth wrapped tightly around 4 wooden strips.

hair: a dense growth of thread-like structures

who said we have to create something out of clay or paintbrushes , or even vibrant flushes of colour . we have the ability to create something out of nothing , even if it means working with millions of strands of protein to create art . i say , WHY NOT.
to express your creative skills irrespective of the medium it is done on
hair is like a big mass of clay, waiting and ready to be molded into something spectacular. but this description can differ from each persons views depending on social and cultural differences
but from what i am aware of , hair has always been an integral part of human splendor. our personal canvas. to carry with us , where-ever we go .

Unknown said...

Yes, I would say it is. If you look at life, everything is a form of art, they way a person cooks to the way they dress or even the way a person reads a book and interprets it. Hair dressers think their work is art, as they create and do various styles.Hair to a hair dresser is like a canvas to a painter or clay to a sculptor. Art is basically your creativity skills which you apply to everyday things.

Unknown said...

Yes, it most certainly is an art! At the risk of sounding ridiculously vain, I must say that ones physical appearance does a lot for the way ones personality is perceived by onlookers. The way you dress, the way you conduct yourself reflects who you are to those who haven't yet gotten a chance to personally get to know you. Whether trying to make an impression or not, ones attire is always what draws in others attention. Well-coiffed people certainly are artists, and hair-combing and styling a significant form of utile art!

There are many meanings to the word art, and the definition most suitable for this situation would be 'the product of human creativity'. Now, the answers to this question can vary depending on how you look at it. Take as an example a mother with an only child; if her daily routine was to comb her daughters luscious long hair ever since it was made possible, then she would consider it an art in it's own form. But think of when we get out of the shower early in the morning; the rush of the moment leaves us no choice but to "brush the damn hair and get over with it"... sometimes not even brush it at all! Picture that serene scene. Not very 'appealing', is it?

Tannya D said...

Why, ofcourse it's an art! According to me, everything we do is an art of its own sort. When it comes to something like combing your hair, don't you think that depicts your personality as well?
Lets take hairdressers as an example;women all over the world fancy going to a salon just so they can get their hair blow dried, usually for occassions. Some may say - why? Its only hair after all. But think about it, you go to a marriage, do you really want people thinking - oh look, her hairs so messed up, how can she carry herself like that? In the end, it comes down to personality. To all those who spend hours behind their hair, you may seem vain, but in the end you just want to come across as approachable, like every one else.

Anonymous said...

Absolutely.
To get that perfect puff or to achieve that 'elegantly' disheveled look, is all a matter of technique.

Just like how an artist paints expressions, I as an individual, practice that on my hair.
How, you ask? Picture this, you've had a good start to your morning by waking up on time, so you FEEL like looking all primped up since you have all the time in world. 10 minutes of deep-conditioning later, you skillfully dry your hair, and sculpt it oh-so flawlessly, that you can't help but look at your lush at every reflective surface :P (i'm incredibly vain =/)

Then again, acquiring a stylish do,isn't possible by just simply combing or brushing your hair, you have to use the right strokes, placing every strand of hair in a fashionable manner. Although, simply running a comb through your hair, might make you look neat and boring (in my opinion).

As Tannya correctly stated, hair-dressers get paid sacks full of cash, to fix-up peoples hair, making their clients look all snappy and hip. Do you not think such a job requires a thorough sense of art? Of course it does.

Hence, I conclude that hair-dressing IS after all a form of art in all it's glory.

Hmm. Well, Yes.
If you consider it as a way of self expression then, yes. Art after all is about self expresion and creativeness.
It depends on how you look at it, In my opinion grooming or combing ones hair is a part of expressing yourself through how you look, especially for women.

Although others dont really see it that way, they only see it as combing hair just so they wouldn't look like a person thats gone through a hurricane.

Moe Nour said...

Depending on the side that you look at it from, i would say that it can be called art in one way, and not in another.

Art basically stands for creativity, or something we imprint in the world, such as, a footprint, which is why so many people wonder why a footprint would be called Art. It is in this sense that combing your hair is art, as it requires skill, patience, taste and a whole atmospheric bubble that forms around you, almost like a different personality. So i agree in this way, that combing your hair is art, for you are attempting to decieve people around you into believing your some punk, for example, to inspire people around you, when your actually the type of person who would go home and help his mother, never shout at home, obedient, etc...

Yet, it is not art in the sense that it is merely, biologically, a natural human instinct, something that we do to inspire others to become attracted to our hair. Deeply thinking, i have noticed many people with personalities different than the way they act infront of others, and the way they dress. Example, A smart person (so-called nerd), would be mocked for his ability to excel in areas where others are ignorant, or too blind by other things to see, so they pick on this "nerd", until that person is forced to change, either by, in the cases that i have seen, to swear more, to be aggressive, to ignore rules, to be disobedient, which reflects how far this question can go, for Art can be defined as anything with skill, concentration and focus.

When you comb your hair, is it art?

Rephrase: Does combing your hair give you an artistic impression?

Yes it does.

Its that feeling you get when you look in the mirror, that strange, happy, cool, relaxed feeling, one that whispers to you, one that entrances you into seeing yourself in a different light, one that exclaims for others to see your hair. Yet again, i can say about the same for how it doesnt give an artistic impression, as it is a part of the modern-day life, which, as you will see in the future, will tell you these three things:
1) Look smart
2) Act smart
3) Trust no-one.

In this sense of ordinary, i find it not artistic, but in the sense of the time, skill and ability to comb your hair, so that you alter the way you look, sometimes/most of the times, altering your personality even.

Yes, it is scary, for i can bet 100dhs that i can alter my appearance and come into school one day, looking like i woke up on the wrong side of the bed, and i would make you think that i am dirty, annoying, stinky, stupid, maybe even deeper thoughts like; he has problems at home, mental issues, when, really, its just a look.

So, conclusion, you cannot simply answer this complex, mind-entrancing question, with a direct yes or no, but, rather, answer it indirectly, with an entire structure of words stating yes or no, but, no answer is right, or wrong, same way nothing is 100%, same way nothing can be infinite. Yet, i continue to say, that the answer doesnt matter, its just the way you think of the question, in which i think of it telepathically and philosophically. By observing other people, i am able to analyse in what way you can react to things, whether it is fear, panic, happiness, loneliness, etc... All this just to answer a simple question that leads to complex thinking, just like this one, and the others to come.

Art seems simple, yet we do not even know why we do it, the reasons that convince us to draw, hell, even eating can be called art, since you are always active whilst eating.

So i support both the yes and no answers to this question, with ways that you might think of in the future.

(I forgot my password to the "Mo Nour" one, so im using this "Moe Nour" one in the future, same person though)

in my opinion, i think just brushing your hair isn't as artistic as styling it. art requires thought, effort and time, and when you think about it, styling your hair does involve these things. so i don't think brushing your hair for the sake of it is considered as a form of art, but styling it is.

Here we have yet another thunk that made me think!!!
I must say friends the responses are amazing!!
I personally feel that your hair is a major part of your beauty, art can also be defined as the creation off beautiful, significant things. We can find beauty in the smallest of things and thus where ever there is beauty there is art!! And come to think of it delicately holding that brush with its tiny bristles gently combing through your hair creates nothing short of art!
So by doing such an insignificant, daily action we all have natural artists within us!:D

Yusra Shah said...

Ofcourse……….art is defined as “The creation of beautiful or significant things” and obviously the way you brush and style your hair is art because you are creating something.
Your hair reflects your personality …..most people express themselves by their hair.
I’ll agree with Neiha …most people like my sister spend hours in front of a mirror merely brushing just like artists who spend hours sketching, painting etc…..
Wow……something as simple as brushing your hair can be defined as art.

Everyone has different perspectives, their different views on what Art is and what Art should be. I say, if random drops of paint on a canvas can be classified as a branch of art, why not the act of brushing hair?

It's not as easy as it seems. So many of us girls out there are dedicated to ensuring that our hair is, in simple terms, perfect. Heck, majority of the boys spend hours styling their hair.

Yet the matter at hand is how to classify 'combing' hair, not setting it. This can be viewed in many different lights. For one thing, I feel it would be considered artistic to watch someone run a comb through their hair, long graceful strokes over and over again, bringing out the shine and freeing tangles.

Whereas, as Myra previously stated, a hurried brush through wet hair early in the morning cannot be viewed as graceful and artistic now can it?

I guess it all depends on which form and technique of combing hair. Not everyone can achieve what hairdressers do; now that is an art.

A woman's hair is her crowning glory, her own canvas, her own piece of clay.

Women have always used their hair as mediums of creativity, adorning its strands with flowers, plaits, and other beautiful things.

So is combing hair considered art?

My answer is a definite yes.

Combing those silky strands is like one of the most important stages of making a painting or a sculpture - starting off with a clean, smooth, flawless base.

Combing your hair is just in preparation for more splashes of colour to come, be it a simple hairclip or a rebellious mohawk (which in my opinion, would be totally awesome) :)

A lot of things in our daily routine have been overlooked, yet, they too are art. Every movement, every blink of an eyelid, and every step may be considered an art. We can even find art in the most 'disgusting things', be it a heap of garbage, a pile of dog turd or a drop of blood.

Jurgienne said...

Plus, who exactly says and decides if something is art or nonsense? what may seem as a nonsensical doodle may mean the world to someone else.

Like what Mehvash said, perspectives vary, though from what i can see, the grace, fluidity and utmost care that a woman puts into combing her hair, makes it art. :)

Manveen said...

To answer this question we all have to ask ourselves what do we define as art?
It depends on every individials perspective. Its like beauty, peoples perceptions on it differ and there is no right or wrong.
Some people may find particular things attractive which others may not. In the same way people consider different things art, so we cannot let our assumptions affect the answer.

Truly speaking, i dont really think that combing your hair itself is the art, i think its the way you style it or tie it. Like you have the french braids, the fancy buns etc.

Unknown said...

Well, I don't believe that combing your hair is art. I mean simple, its taking a comb and brushing your hair. But it does become some form of art when you begin to style your hair in different ways. When hairdressers do a hair job, you could call it a form of art.

But honestly, I believe that combing your hair in all sorts of different ways is just a waste of time!!

priyanka.nathaline.lopez said...

Well, this one really got me thinking..
I dont really regard combing of hair with a little plastic bristled brush as an art.I do know that the are various specific combs to different hair types which are not used to comb the traditional way, one would probably consider that as an art.
I think that the use of jeweled, encrusted, styled and designed combs to set hair in beautiful ways would be an art, for just like any other piece of art, it would make someone take a second look at that person.
Though i would more likely consider the plaiting of hair and styling of it in various ways as an art.

Anonymous said...

Art is basically a work of creativity. it's the product of human imagination - the creation of gorgeous, significant things. Combing your hair is just taming your mane which doesnt involve any work of imagination - you take a simple brush and brush through your thick and healthy locks. However, if one gets their hair cut and trimmed to any sort of trendy hairstlye or even simple highlights or dye can be considered as an art since it does involve creativity in it. Even french buns, braiding etc. can be a form of art.

Therefore i personally think that combing your locks isnt an art !!

I believe combing your hair is an art.You can make different styles with your hair which can be considered as an art which not everyone can do.But if you simply give two or three sweeps of a comb to your head without actually caring how it looks, I think it wouldnt be called art.You would want your work to be perfect if you want it to be artistic. So I think combing your hair to the perfect way/or the way you desire it, it is art.

Unknown said...

hmmm well it depends, I think yes and no, when your in a rush you dont really take time to brush your hair but when you do I guess it is like art.

Payam H.D said...

Art is a creation of significance and beauty. If a person spends hours combing their hair just to their liking, then that is art. Because even combing your hair takes patience and a certain skill that only each individual can develop for themselves. Every hairstyle has its own unique style and character.
So in conclusion, yes i do believe combing your hair is art.

Nnamdi said...

well yeah it is.This is actually how i look at this.
It is known that art is considered as beauty so when people comb or brush their hair they do so to look good and beautiful so yeah combing hair is an art.

I think that combing your hair is definitey NOT a form of art because when I think of art, what comes to my mind is music, literacy and paintings.

Art takes skill and time and I just dont see hair brushing as a form of art.

But thats just my opinion. =D

Unknown said...

According to me combing your hair is definetely an art. lovely shining hair is one of a woman's greatest beauty assets. how one does their hair speaks of their personality! keeping one's hair groomed and in place speaks volumes about habits and should not be taken lightly!!

Unknown said...

Art, to me, is a form of expressing yourself. It can be found in many different forms, for example, in music, painting and makeup. Physical appearance is growing more and more important to the people of our generation. No one can say that when they see someones hair that has been done beautifully that they don't want to know how to do it. I'm not sure that I agree to the extent that combing your hair is an art form though. The biggest form of art to me is music, because it's an individual taste. Everyone combs their hair, so I'm not sure that I think of that as an art form as such. However, how people do their hair in those twist and pins...wow. I'm jealous. -_-

Art is a craft or branch of learning that uses certain methods or rules. Combing hair is an ability that we are taught when we are small for which we use different techniques for different hair conditions, for example-for freshly washed hair, girls with long hair usually comb their hair very gently.

If we look at our life in that way then we can find that everything we do is art right from brushing our teeth to getting ready to sleep. In fact, if we try to step into someone else’s boots we will face a great deal of difficulty to live in someone else’s life and fall in the first step. Everyone lives a different life and has different ways of living in it which is therefore art.
