Since time immemorial, people have been modifying their bodies, whether through make up, or piercings, or tattoos, or branding, or scarring or using neck rings, implants, lip plates, coloured lenses and so on. A few years ago, a man got his sclera (the white of the eye) tattooed. Here's a new fad: corset piercing.
What are your views on body modification? Should there be a limit or not?

Well, anything is modifying really, coloring your hair, lenses and like said, makeup which majority of girls uses. Most of us would like to keep it at that because we find it normal without being judged. I honestly don't have anything against people who take it to another level because that I believe is how they wanna express themselves, or if not, just how they want to be artistic.
However, I think it's shame though sometimes when people seem to be doing it for fun and that's the limit in my opinion. Tattoos like this cannot be undone http://urfashions.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/worst-tattoo-ever1.jpg, well you can try but it will never completely be gone.
I walked into a man once in hard rock cafe who had his sclera tattooed black as well. Now I personally wouldn't do it ever but in the end it's their body or 'canvas', their choice :)
At the end of the day, it's their body or canvas, as Benedickte referred to it. To me, body modification is any change made to ourselves, from piercings to tattoos to lenses to hair/nail extensions to false lashes and even plastic surgery.
Personally, I have nothing against piercing and unelaborate tattoos. We cannot deny that sometimes people take it beyond the limit and as bizarre as it may seem, they wont give a darn.
To some people, its a way of expressing themselves. It is a unique technique in which they tend to showcase who they really are .To others, its a way of seeking attention. Either way, it's their choice.
I find genital piercing unnecessary, the nasal bridge, septum, fraenum, nape, webbing and many more too are just not worth the pain. Oh well, some people are willing to take it despite the risk of infections/nerve damage/keloids etc.
Some eerie modifications i found > http://www.oddee.com/item_96617.aspx
Like Benedickte said, body modification can absolutely anything. If we are talking about extreme body modification like plastic surgery, tattoos and piercings then there should be limits however we shouldn't forget that it depends on culture and other factors. I think if a woman's aim is to be lady like then ear piercings would be the limit. Also, I think a woman represents purity in her house and should not be scarred.
If I take into account the other side then body modification is a way for people to show there individuality and express who they really are.
No matter how barbaric body modification may be, i don't think we can easily demolish it. Why is it okay for people to get piercings and apply make up, But not acceptable for them to get tatoos. I mean, They both come under the same category. I grasp that a lot of teens now days are crossing the limit, but have we set a limit in the first place?
Why is a tatoo on the shoulder not as horrifying as a tatoo in the sclera? Why are ear piercing understandable but corset piercing considered petrifying?
It may be a crazy way of expressing oneself. But lets look at it this way, There are 6 billion people in this planet and everyone wants to somehow stand out.
I agree with Raya, no matter how horrific or painful body modification looks, it is how people want to define their personality, define themselves.
The term body modification outlines the act of making something different, changing the way you look. I.e. it could be make up, hair colouring, contact lenses and also more permanent matters like piercings and tattoos. But why is it that we find wearing makeup so indifferent and ordinary yet we think twice about a piercing or a tattoo. Despite the fact that yes, piercings and tattoo’s are permanent as opposing to make-up it is still under the same title, altering the way you look, body modification.
And about there being a limit, well, I guess it’s up to the person. It’s their choice whether they want to tattoo their sclera or get corset piercings, it’s not like their being forced to do so. Plus, who are we to decide what people want to do to their bodies?
Um, at the end of the day I guess it comes down to personal choice. It's your body so I think you should be given the freedom to choose whether or not you want to 'modify' it.
It brings out creativity, sometimes in the most extreme ways, but it is a way of expressing individuality and originality and because of that, I don't think there should be any barriers against it.
It definitely is a way of expressing themselves, and I personally would never do something so permanent to my body, but they have the freedom to do with themselves what they will.
As Benedickte mentioned about the guy at the Hard Rock with the tattooed sclera, it was really creepy, because he had only a tiny part at the corners of his eyes that were white. At the end of the day they have a choice, and cannot be forced to contain their 'creativity'.
I think that everyone has a right to deciding what goes on their bodies, including tatoos or any type of body modificaton. I don't think you can restrict that from anyone, so there peobably won't be limits to it, regardless of whether or not there should be.
Personally, I get a tiny bit freaked out(I hate needles):P
In my opinion, people shouldn't be limited when modifying their bodies. It's their bodies, first of all, and they have every right to modify it to their preference, be it tattoos, piercings, plastic surgery or even liposuction. It also allows people to express themselves.
Almost everyone has modified their body in some or the other way. But, doing something like tattooing your eye is just way above the limit. But, (just like everyone says) its their body, and they have all right to do whatever they want with it. Though, the hardest part is dealing with the pain...
Well, our body, our right, isn't it? It's just similar to the attire you wear, expressive and contains a statement that one would like to tell the world. I think same concept applies here.
Although, tattooing your sclera is a tad too extreme, but hey, you have to endure(if there was any pain which I am fairly certain of) for what you desire, don't you?
I also think that when it comes down to it, it's our body, really. Or our 'canvas' [I like the way you put that, Benedickteee.]
I do think that some things, like implants or tattoos in your eyes, or even piercings in unnecessary places are just pathetic and silly. Maybe, like ecstatic dressing senses, they ARE just ways of expressing ourselves, but really, can't you find a way to express yourself without permanently scarring yourself? What if you change your mind?
But my views on this issue aren't strong,as some people see makeup, hair dye or nail art as modifying your body... [I DONT THINK SO. ..Or maybe I'm just saying that because I've got all of the above done and I don't wanna seem like a hypocrite >.> HEY! Atleast I'm honest]
I think that modification of your body is fine, really, its YOUR BODY. But it's silly if taken to an extreme extent.
I believe that everyone should feel free to do what they like without being judged. If people modify their bodies to the most extreme states like we've seen, let them be, it's their life and they like doing it, we shouldn't be judging them.
Raya has really highlighted my point! People shouldn't be judged or stopped for getting plastic surgery, tattoos and piercings done as I believe it is perfectly fine for people to do what they think is best for them even if it means having a tattoo in the sclera! At the end of the day its their bodies and I strongly believe nobody should be stopped or judged on what they do to them selves may it be pleasing or displeasing!
I believe that a person has the right to alter themselves in any way that they wish. I also believe that other people have the right to think whatever they want to about what they perceive when encountering the modified person.
