No. To be painfully truthful and to the point and serious, there is no need to keep animals in cages. Firstly, they aren't on earth 'for our amusement' and secondly we should not keep them in cages to protect them from harm because they are endangered.
Putting animals in cages and spending mints of money to take care of them is just silly, all that money and resources HAS to be applied in keeping these animals safe from [mostly] poachers out in the wild.
In time these animals will breed and multiply, without much worry. The only concern is poaching and deforestation, Man-Made problems that we need to address so we don't have to keep this poor creatures in confined spaces any longer.
Well, Simply put do you think it's right to put prisoners in cells? Whether you said yes or no doesn't matter my answer would still be the same. Isn't putting a prisoner in a cell, taking them away from there natural enviroment and feeding them food there are not accustomed to considered a form of torture or punishment that governments reinforce? This statement is correct. Now what is the difference between putting a prisoner in jail and a pet in a cage? Well, I'll tell you the difference is the prisoner did something deserving of punishment, something that could physically morally and or emotionally affect themselve and the society there in. But what was the crime that poor little birdy committed? The only crime that little hamster or puppy committed was being so furry lovable and adorable that it instantly catches you attention, and because of it being such an innocent and amiable creature we felt the need to punish it by putting it in a cage. Like Duwane mentioned earlier there not here for our amusement they to have their own path to follow and their own heartfelt desires. And even if they were for our amusement what gives you the right to fulfill your amusement by such a torturous daily activity? Even dogs who are considered to be man's best friends have to be tied up at night to keep themselvesfrom doing the things they desire. You keep them tie to a dog house for your own pleasure, so why can't you let them rumage through a trash can for their own pleasure. I'm sure a dog must want to be with his master every second of the day if this was the case then there would be no need for you to train them and they would have no desire to run off and explore. and with that I rest my case
Definitely not! Lets say this issue was reversed and the animals were the dominant species, and lets say that one random day at a family outing, you and/or your siblings are snatched away from your parents and dropped into a 12 by 12 feet cage. Barely enough space or freedom for you to move about as compared to the wild where there is fields upon fields of open wideness. Not only that, but in that confined and limited space one is given, one might go insane with boredom and the continuous monotony of having to walk in circles everyday with nothing to do in that same little square known as your ‘new home’ and see the same black rusted bars and gray concrete floors. Even if they supposedly say that it is for ‘protection for an endangered species’, just so they can get a good public image, its not. You are only there for one thing. The benefit of the so called dominant species’ amusement.
So to conclude, no. Definitely not. I strongly oppose to keeping animals in cages, I believe its just not right.
They are living beings too and this is their world too. Its not fair that we take over and keep them hostage in cages. How would we feel, if we were put in a cage, with nothing to do but walk around all day long? How would we feel if we were restricted from our own homes? It would be extremely selfish and inhumane of us to hold them captive for the sake of our own entertainment.
Not is it morally wrong but also scientifically unacceptable. The animals could easily loose their natural instinct, which took them millions and millions of years of evolutions to develop.
If animals are being kept for scientific reasons then i suggest keeping them for a while and releasing them once the necessary information is obtained.
If the problem is hunting and chances of extinction, then i suggest applying laws and heavy fines against hunting. Holding animals hostage is not the only solution we have.
Definitely not. I believe its immoral to do so. They are living organisms just like us and it is just not right to capture them and deprive them from their freedom as independent species.
Merely because we are somehow the more dominant species does not give us the right to manipulate the animals and seize them in cages/zoos.
Its quite selfish how we detach these animals from their habitat knowing that this will contribute towards them losing their natural instincts which took them years of evolution to develop, just like us.
Well, no. It is immoral to take away animals from their natural habitat and place them in cages, restricting their freedom.
Instead, they should be protected from all types of harm that is right now, happening: we are destroying their natural habitat by cutting down trees, and we have black markets where their skin and tusks are sold for high prices.
So no, it is not right for animals to be kept in zoos and cages- but honestly, I don't think that’s going to stop people from visiting them with children, or creating them, or charging people for it. As long as there is a market for zoos, there will always be zoos: people like money and 'amusement' too much to give up doing something wrong.
I think it depends on the zoo but I totally disagree with cages. Some zoos focus on rehabilitation where as others focus on being a tourist attraction. I think that if the zoo takes an animal in, feeds it and cares for it then let's it out to it's natural habitat then fine, but just imagine if an animal has to stay in a zoo for it's whole life.
It's an extremely controversial and complex topic. Some people see it as an educational attraction but I would hate to in a zoo.
cages? well then, NO! I disagree with keeping animals in cages. But, I've been to some open zoos where all the birds and animals are left free wandering about. In fact,in zoos like those we are trapped in cages instead of the animals.
Well, the zoos do give them food and water all their life till they die and zookeepers think that they're doing them a favor by giving them food and so. But, no they aren't doing them a favor because they have snatched away they're freedom. And since they're living things too, they have all right to live life by their own conditions.
-sigh- I've lost count of how many times we've had this question in exams.
Regardless, I think it's pretty hypocritical to confine animals to the bars of a cage when we, humans, fight for/have the liberty to go wherever we want, whenever we want.
Purely because we are the dominant species is a pathetic excuse to cage these animals up. They deserve freedom and the right to live in their natural habitat.
So, no, I don't think its right to keep animals in zoos and cages. Just because they don't have a voice doesn't mean they shouldn't have their freedom.
I agree with Yolany. We're constantly debating on this topic, to free or not to free, but our countless arguments are undeniably fruitless, because we only talk. No one EVER takes action against the supposedly immoral, unfair advantage we have over these poor defenceless animals, by taking a stand and protesting for their freedom. Because they cannot stand up for right, that duty falls upon us, their captors, and yet we continue to enslave them and deny them their birthright of freedom and domination of the free, wild plains of africa, or their camouflaged hunts in the leafy terrain of the Amazonian canopies.
I agree with Nikita, It depends on the Zoo, I think. Some really aren't as bad as others and actually provide a pretty good home for them by having a much larger space for movement, provision of food and water, and care for the young ones etc.
Now cages, again, It really depends. I once walked by this place that had at least 15 bunnies in a cage not even big enough for two. It was so horrific to see how that cage was hampering each and every one of their movements. However, I still don't think that necessarily means all zoos and shops are as inhumane as they were.
Nonetheless, it's sad to know the continuous monotony of walking back and forth in a cage they go through as Shenny said, and to know in the end that it's all for our amusement :/
Well, maybe the intention matters? If it's for a noble purpose like wanting to preserve them before losing them out to extinction, maybe it isn't so inhumane. But if it's merely for entertainment,we have to be the most sadistic species to ever exist.
But if someone believes that confining animals in a small space no matter what the purpose is-pure or not, is it okay to leave the animals in the wilderness that WE are trying to completely destruct it to the remaining bits? Wouldn't that be a ignorant of us then too giving way to more debates? But in general,it depends on the intention.
No. I think it's just downright wrong, and maybe it's okay if its being done so that the species doesn't go into extinction, but I just cannot have an open mind about caging animals [And I think it has alot to do with the furry dogs on my bed right now..].
It's absolutely disgusting and inhumane if they're being caged for humans to watch, or for our entertainment and it's even worse that people are ready to do this to these animals just because they don't have a say in it, since we're the "bigger" species. Just because we're more evolved, doesn't mean we have any right to lock them up.
I've been boycotting zoos ever since I've had enough of a mind to think about the animals and empathize with them. I suggest everyone does the same, until we come upon a time where we realize our own stupidity and put an end to this madness.
In my point of view keeping animals in zoos is the correct thin to do. If we had animals hanging around in forests and jungles, I'm sure we would face many horrific problems. we have to think of it logically! In our world today we have designed zoos to keep the wild animals there, offering them an environment similar to the on they had adapted to. Having animals in zoos is much safer also having them in zoos can also be entertaining for us. People can come to see the magnificently beautiful animals from all over the world without getting hurt! People can also gaze at the creatures or animals and at the same time learn more about the wildlife.
I think in our days most of us look for safety first, therefore keeping animals in zoos is the safest thing to do!

is that even a moral dilemma?
