If animals were planets, what planets would they be? Explain your reasons.
e.g. Mercury could be a fire ant because it is small and red and hot. Jupiter could be a T-Rex because of its huge size and how it devours comets and asteroids and captures wandering satellites.
Now think about what animal Earth could be. What about Saturn? And Venus and Mars and Neptune and Uranus and Pluto (even though Pluto has been declassified as a planet. You could also include the Moon if you wish, even though it's a satellite and not a planet.)

I don't know why but I picture Saturn as an octapus, possibly because it's rings have a slight resemblence to an octapus' legs, as well as the ring being something extra in which the other planets don't have, where an octapus has more legs than most creatures on the planet, disregarding insects.
As for Venus I would think of an animal of beautiful structure, such as a horse, there is just something about the name Venus that seems powerful, as does the planet itself.
Pluto, the first image that came into my head was a dog of course, you can blame media such as Disney Channel for that one, but if I were to seriously assign an animal to Pluto, I would probably go with an arctic animal such as a polar bear or a penguin because pluto is the farthest from the sun as is Antartica and even Alaska in comparison to the states, therefore it is also the coldest.
The Earth, I would consider to be associated with an animal that is always moving and somewhere in between hot and cold climate. Perhaps a lion.
Jupiter being one of the largest planets to me just resembles an animal that is also large in comparison, but also harmless. Possibly a whale if they were to change color it would be an exact match.
Mars on the otherhand, would probably be associated with a desert animal, as its colors and surface resemble a desert, for example; a kimono dragon.
Uranus to me looks like a gigantic fish, maybe even a jelly fish just because of the way it's colors reflect upon the blackness of outer space as do many fish and jelly fish in the ocean.
Finally, the Sun to me would resemble a bird, because as they sing, they project an auditory to the light we look at every morning.
Just my analysis, may not make sense to most people, but that's just my vision.
In my opinion:
The Sun - a Phoenix, because of its fiery plumage and majestic nature.
The Moon - A wolf, probably because of it howling to the moon, but also because it's interpreted as an cold and lonely sort of animal.
Venus - a lioness, golden and motherly :)
Earth - a turtle, it represents nature, green and the water it lives in.
Mars - a scabby reddish brown toad!
Saturn - a chameleon, it's many changing colours.
Uranus - A whale, maybe because of it's colour.
Neptune - a peacock, because of its multi-hued blues and greens.
Pluto - no offence to anyone, but an Angler fish, like the one in Finding Nemo, only because it's sooooooo far away and we don't know too much about it (and we never will....)
Im not sure why, but when i think of earth, the first thing that comes to my mind is a Dolphin. We treat it ruthlessly but it still says nothing. Perhaps it could also be due to the fact that dolphins live in water and are alway amiable and smiling all the time. That what i like to think of our home planet.
Mars reminds of a gingery fluffy cat. Maybe garfield or crookshanks. For some reason i've always thought of it as earths play mate.
Saturn reminds of a tiger. Maybe because its rings and size look ferocious.
Pluto reminds me of a polar bear. Lonesome and living in the cold far far away.
Neptune an uranus both remind me of penguins, also because they have frigid temperature. Besides, penguins are way more social than polar bears.
For me:
Venus - the first thing that came to my mind was either a white dove or a swan; an image of beauty.
Earth - the first image taht struck was one of a combination of both land and water; so I'd go with any amphibian.
Mars - a fox; something red and firey but not as feirce as a lion.
Jupiter - an elephant; an animal that is huge but also benign.
Uranus - a jellyfish; the comparison comes from the colour.
Neptune - something blue again - a blue reef fish.
Pluto - polar bear; an animal far away and in a cold place.
Sun - a lion; because of the flaming colours and the image associated with the zodiac sign Leo.
That's a difficult one, in terms of imagination I'm not great and the fact that the planets' colour can vary due to different amounts of chemicals.
Neptune and Uranus, being the furthest away would for me represent a penguin and a polar bear respectively. While Saturn and Uranus would be an elephant and a whale.
Mercury would be a Fennel Fox, small, nimble and can withstand a lot of heat. And satellites could be termites; small, not very colourful and insignificant.
Venus, Mars and Earth are tough. Some sort of mammals, really not sure and the sun of course a big, bright, ferocious lion.
I am in love with this post already.
Animals are slightly difficult for me to imagine, since I have always pictured the planets as these magnificent, towering gods and goddesses - obviously their namesakes - but I'll give it my best shot!
(I refuse to affiliate any of the planets with insects or any other creepy-crawly thereof, mostly because of my own phobia of them.)
Mercury - Duwane's comparison of it being a fennel fox intrigues me but I personally see it as a mouse. A little, scampering thing, but with cunning and the ability to hold its own regardless. Always in the pursuit of the ultimate cheese - in this case, the sun - but just this close to getting it. A torturous existence. Mercumouse, I apologize.
Initially, I associated Venus with a peacock. But then I scratched that out since, one, Saturn is more colorful than Venus and, two, the peacock is associated with Juno/Hera, not Venus. Then I decided to do a bit of research because I lack originality and found out that Aphrodite (of whom Venus is a rip-off, sorry to say) was commonly seen in the company of myrtles and doves. I called the latter before even researching so, yes, doves. It makes sense to me because Venus is said to be the brightest planet in the solar system, which lead me to think about how profound the appearance of a dove is, one thing lead to another et voila.
Earth! Earth, earth, earth, what shall we do with you- Dolphin. Totally a dolphin. A graceful, serene creature, but also capable of violence when provoked. Sensitive, intelligent, capable of adaptation but still liable to dying off if not treated well. This association I am particularly proud of :3
Mars would be an angry animal, one in isolation and barren lands, but still somewhat dignified and majestic... Perhaps a vulture. Or maybe an eagle. Or a falcon. Yeah, most definitely a falcon, actually.
Jupiter...mm, mythological connotations aside, I agree with Sabrina and pin it as a whale.
Saturn! Saturn is said to be a beautiful planet, so I would associate it with a classically beautiful animal. This is completely subjective of course, but I think of it as a Monarch Butterfly, with its rings and tints of orange and tan, bands of darker shades and whatnot. I don't know, it seems like such a gentle planet. Maybe it's my personal bias towards Saturn as well as butterflies that has led me to this conclusion but, ah, well.
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are all water, ice creatures for me. Uranus would be a seal (collective awww) or maybe a polar bear!; Neptune would be an arctic fox or a husky (collective squeal); and Pluto would be a penguin.
(Is it bad that I want to cuddle the last two planets and former-planet now?)
The Sun! The sun would totally be a phoenix, or a fire dragon. The moon would be the contrast, an owl, or an ice dragon.
Yeah, okay, I'm done now.
According to moi:
Mercury: like neineisharie said, a small intimidated mouse placed next to the magnificent Venus.
Venus: Magnificent. Bold. Majestic. A lioness. Even the name sounds strikingly powerful! (:
Earth: I’d like to think of our home as a cheerful dolphin. Always happy and smiling. So graceful, balanced, harmonious but given the circumstances could also be violent if needed to.
Mars: Hmm maybe a red fox, not as majestic as the lion but still bold.
Jupiter: An elephant or a whale. Or setting aside the fact that they’re extinct, a BIG dinosaur! x)
Saturn: A very beautiful planet, as said. A butterfly or a peacock. Or maybe a giraffe, because of its colours.
Uranus and Neptune: Creatures that live in habitats surrounded by ice or water. Maybe fish, or seals or penguins!
Pluto: ahh little ol’ Pluto, distant, isolated and lonesome, definitely a polar bear.
The moon: A lone wolf. Or maybe even an owl.
The sun: A fiery red Phoenix! Or a Huge red powerful Dragon! xD
^ Excellent associations above! I'm impressed.
A few have compared Earth to a dolphin. Great choice. I once knew someone who compared Earth to a beehive - teeming and pullulating with people. Not as positive as a dolphin - but plausible all the same.
Another student I knew compared Earth to a peacock because of its sparkling blues and greens - just like how Earth would look from space.
Earth would be a turtle, mainly because of its beauty and colours.
Jupiter, I imagine being an elephant because its huge :)
Mars would be a fox, mainly because they're red.
Venus would be, like most people are saying, something elegant, like a lioness.
I agree with Raya on Saturn, something about its rings remind me of a tiger.
Uranus and Neptune both look like water creatures because of their colours.
In my opinion:
Earth : could be a dog and we could be the fleas sucking the life out of it by pollution... Air pollution will lead to breaking down the ozone lair (global warming). In a dog, this would mean baldness or loss of fur because we the flees have injected diseases (pollution) into it's blood stream (water).
Saturn : could be a spider because it also traps insects the same way Saturn draws in asteroids to its belt.
Venus : could be a Armadillo because it covers itself in a layer of shell, whereas Venus coats itself with a layer of clouds.
Mars : could be a lizard since it can sustain high temperatures in the dessert just the way Mars sustains high temperatures from the sun. Although, they both do not prefer such high temperatures.
Neptune : could be a blue tang (the blue fish in "Finding Nemo") because they both are bright blue with dark spots on them. :P
Uranus : could be a Snouted Crocodile since both of their pasts are shrouded in mystery.
Pluto : could be a blue krait [snake] (its not blue) because its small and powerful like Pluto. Since Pluto, is strong enough to rotate around the sun.
Fascinating post! Got my imagination working^^
I'd classify Mercury as a camel because of its close distance to the sun and yet being able to take the heat and survive.
Venus seems like a swan, maybe. Probably because of its silvery shades and it just appears to me as a magestic planet.
Earth, oh mother earth! Definitely a dolphin. Full of life, harmonious and graceful. However, defensive when its harmed.
Mars could be some animal related to desert, maybe. Like Sabrina said, because of its colours and surface.
Jupiter: Enormous, fierce-looking yet peaceful. Could be an elephant or a whale.
Saturn, umm.. maybe a lion because of its size and colour resemblance.
Uranus could be a seal. Living in the cold, so far away.
Neptune could be a slithery snake.
Pluto is certainly a polar bear, like many others said. Lonesome, isolated and 'almost' extinct.
Since the Sun is a big ball of fire, it could be be associated to a a mammoth. Gigantic and warm.
The first thing that comes to my mind when i hear the word Moon is a wolf.
(Star) Sun: A lion, Powerful, King of the Jungle as the Sun is the Ruler of the Solar System.
Mercury: A Scorpion, Petit, Glowing (Since its close to the sun), Hot.
Venus: A horse, White-Beige, Calm, Peaceful, and Beautiful.
Earth: Parrot, Vibrant and full of life, Complex creatures, they are as mysterious as the Earth, The more you learn, the more there is to discover about them.
Mars: Coccinellidae (Lady Bird), they are red, and are neither birds nor a true bug, just like we aren’t sure if human survival is possible on this planet or not.
Jupiter: Ostrich, Huge just as Jupiter.
Saturn: A peacock. Just as Saturn is distinguished because of its rings, peacocks are recognized for their extravagant tails.
Uranus: Opheodrys (Green Snakes). Existent in the very depths of the forest just as Uranus lies at the depths of the solar system. The colour is also quiet similar.
Neptune: Linckia laevigata (Blue Sea Star). Blue as the planet is well known for and also lives at the bed of the sea, where temperatures are cold just like how Neptune is cold.
Pluto is no longer a Planet, so… =)
The Sun - A human baby, because i watched and still watch telletubbies too much. XD
The Moon - A wolf, because the dark and white shades of the moon resembles a wolf's coat.
Earth - A turtle, because the grassy green land of earth resembles its skin, the sandy brown land of earth resembles its shell and the ocean is where it lives/swims. ^_^
Uranus - Uranus....
Jupiter - A gorilla, because it's big and dark brown like some gorillas.
Pluto - A dog, Hollywood is to blame.
Saturn - A iguana, because of it's many changing colours.
Neptune - A blue morpho butterfly, obliviously because its blue colour.
I think Earth would be some kind of omnivore, a bear perhaps. The veritable mishmash of land and water relates to a bears features; eating both animals and plants.
Mars is known to be red and rather small. I think it would be a miniature red crab merely because of its size and colour.
Saturn would be a slithering, seeping snake. The ring around Saturn resembles a snakes movements, often gliding around objects in ringlets.
Venus would be a tamed tiger, as the planets name just does not seem to be home to something ferocious. A tiger because of the colour similarity and 'tamed' because the image one gets when hearing the name 'Venus' is often not fierce.
Earth would be something multi-coloured like a chameleon or something.
Venus would be something delicate and feminine like a butterfly.
Mars would be a a dog something close to man kind.
Jupiter would be a whale, HUGE!
Saturn would be a caterpillar it has a large number of something, in this case it is feet and rings.
Pluto would be a blue bottle.
Neptune would be a blue jay.
Uranus would be a blue frog/toad?
My view of planet Pluto is as a human being.
I picture this because Pluto is classified by many to be a planet. Though some prefer not to classify it under such heading. Just as humans are classified as mammals in the animal kingdom, but many prefer not to refer to themselves or cast simalarity of themselves to animals.
Mars reminds me of fish because it has no distinct temperature. Usually in daytime Mar's temperature is extremely hot and as the night progress it becomes even more cold than hot. Both of the temperatures humans are unable to withstand.
As for fish they are able to over a period of time adapt to the changing temperatures around them.
Mercury reminds me of an ant because it as for me seems so insignificant to the other planets even Pluto a planet not often considered to be gets more attention thn Mercury.
Jupiter reminds me of a lizard or chamelion because of its ability to change hues or colors.
The planet Jupiter is like a lion to me because it's so huge and intimidating compared to all other planets. Just as a lion is head and intimidates all other animals.
Earth reminds me of a snake. It's a very corrupted being but only strikes when necesary and generally good at heart(refering not to the beings who live in it but the planet itself corrupted by use and strikes with natural disasters only when neccesary)
Neptune reminds me of a dolphin because the tranquil mixture of colors always made it seem like a peaceful planet in my eyes.
As for Venus and Uranus I can't really say much about them but they seem to me to be related with sea cretures mainly because of there name
The Sun: A phoenix because of its flames. Plus, because of the Phoenix myth that when it dies it turns into ashes but then incarnates. Same way, the sun will eventually burn out, but by then another sun would form.
Earth: Reminds me of a frog. The way the frog can live in the water as tadpoles (Oceans), and as adult frogs on land (Land mass).
Saturn: A lion i guess because the rings remind me of the Mane.
Mars: Reminds me of a Primate because as they say Mars is somewhat related to earth and in the same way, Primates are related to us.
Jupiter: Elephant. Biggest land animal.
Pluto: Reminds me of an ant. Very small but usually under-estimated. Ants are powerful creatures. Carry things few times their own size, team work, etc.
Venus: A horse. I honestly do not know why, Just sounds like a horse name. :P
Mercury: FireFly. Its close to the sun and it gives you that 'glow' feeling.
Moon- A swan due to the moon's elegance and grace.
Sun- A dragon because it breathes fire(but really it's just a bunch of reactions)
Earth-A blue whale, the biggest mammal. And since the earth is populated by majority of us,mammals, I will go with the whale. (:
Mars--Reminds me of a red squirrel. It's red and friendly, who may provide us with shelter one day.
Saturn- a yellow python. Merely due to its slender, sleek rings.
Pluto-- a koala bear. Diffident and shy to an extent. It is quiet and sticks to its own matters, although we've abandoned it. ):
Venus--the symbol of love. So probably a lioness or a puppy.Mainly because they are both calm, lovely creatures, I am not so sure.
Neptune--Likely to be some sort fish or jelly fish due to its mysterious blue composure.
The sun gives me a picture of a wild vicious lion with its luminous and garish coloured mane.
Our home earth is a gentle dolphin, with a soul full of excitement and existence and is soft- hearted however will be harsh to any enemy.
Mars is a furious red fox because of its dazzling vibrant colour.
Saturn is like a beautiful giraffe because of its colour, or a scheming snake because of its rings that go around.
Venus maybe some sort of female deer, as it seems fragile and elegant.
Neptune and Uranus both look like shy, quiet and sensitive blue butterflies.
Jupiter reminds me of fish scales because of their detailed design and it also resembles a killer whale for its size.
