is email dead? Maybe dying, but not dead. atleast not yet.
The writer is somehow right. For personal communication, families and friends rather use facebook over email for a large number of reasons. Mainly because its faster as they can chat with people and even check on their loved ones profiles as they do so. And also because EVERYONE has facebook where it is easier to just search someone by name even if you lost their email.
But email is still very much more private than facebook and because of this it is still very much alive amongst the working sector. You don't often see business men writing on each others walls.
I dont think people should make a big deal out of email becoming unpopular among certain people. After all, Its technology. If we refused to move on from mainframe computers decades ago, where would we be now?
besides, if there was no email, how was everyone to register on facebook ? (:
Everyone has the option of email, but when the youth of the world stops using it, it means that in the future the decline will be steep. a lot like letters by mail. I never had to write a letter and post it and that has continued over to my life now and it will be the same in the future. I have very little reason to post a letter to someone and I have little reason to e-mail someone anymore.
Facebook will be checked much more often and I know I'll get a faster reply. It's simple really, people check their social networking accounts much more than their email accounts.
But as with the decline of letters to electronic mail, a certain degree of formality has been lost. The same goes with a facebook message, because it's on the same platform where you interact with your friends you feel little need to keep your writing formal.
And I find this post perfect timing, because I'm trying to address the prefectorial body through e-mail, but since I've got so few replies, I have to turn to facebook to remind them to check their mail. E-mail will stick around for the sake of it and as Raya said, we still need it sometimes.
Email isn’t ‘dead’ or ‘dying’, it’s just simply less used. Take a look at writing letters. People still write letters, although about 95% of us prefer sending mail electronically as opposing to writing, as it is faster. But the reason why the majority of us stopped writing mail is merely because we wanted a more informal, quicker and easier way of sending or receiving our mail.
This same case is applied to the matter of email losing to facebook. We prefer using facebook because its less complex, i.e people can check their friends/relatives profiles if they need to be updated with what they’ve been up to, or people use facebook if they have misplaced their friend’s or relative’s email addresses. It’s much more faster, and is informal. Like Duwane said, we feel little need to keep our writing formal when it comes to interacting with our friends.
It doesn’t mean that we are going to completely stop emailing or writing letters, it’s just that we prefer using facebook. And as for writing letters and emails, they’ll still be around except for the fact that we will be using them to a lesser extent.
Email is used less because people are too lazy to write.
I think Facebook makes people want to outdo each other and become sel centered. I always use email, but as it is I don't spend much time on the computer. I prefer talking to people face to face.
Email is still universal with businesses. It is more appropriate to attach a document and send it through email.
Email shouldn't be in a competition Facebook. They offer similar but no the same services. Email will always be changing. Facebook will always be superficial.
Definitely not dead! Maybe less used than Facebook, but still alive.
Facebook is a less formal way of communicating with friends and family. I find it more comfortable to use and its also a quicker way of keeping in touch. People nowadays check their facebook at least everyday so this makes it a more efficient mean of socialising. We could post pictures and update statuses to keep people informed of what we're doing. There are also group discussions and various other facilities that facebook provides as opposed to email.
Email on the other hand is usually used for more formal purposes, such as business issues. It have less options as compared to facebook and this is why people generally prefer facebook over email.
Interesting topic. Email is still alive in numerous ways like mentioned by Raya though facebook has a great lead in the normal every day lives of family and friends email is still evident in the business live. It is a more secure and private way too send mail and letters. Plus since email has been around for such a long time it seems to have some sentimental value. In addition as Raya has mentioned ealier the majority of sites, blogs applications etc.. make the use of an email to not only make an account but to also informyou on what is going on. Though, if my sources are correct Facebook is expected to shut down effective March 15. Then again it was a chain message, but if so we on't have to worry about this competition anymore.
Email is certainly less popular these days, with social networking websites such as Facebook taking over the internet.
Although I think this only applies to the generation of today, I still see my parents and friends who are older choose female rather than Facebook. Adults prefer to use email as it's more professional than Facebook. Imagine sending your boss your CV or a work related message through Facebook?
But with today's generation Facebook has become a must for each individual. You'd be asked why you don't have one and treated like you missing an arm. *Much like the Blackberry craze in my opinion.*
Personally, I don't think Facebook is all that special. Even though I use it, I dislike knowing so much 'information' about my friends. Seeing tons of wallposts that spam my homepage, wallposts that have nothing to do with me whatsoever. Although it's got it's advantages with allowing long lost friends or just plain friends to connect and contact each other it's still a nuisance how Facebook gives you extra information that sometimes you just don't care about. *Not to sound cocky or anything, but I don't think anyone would appreciate 2 minute status changes.*
Email, in my opinion. Is so much better. Even though you may get spam at times, it's so much simpler than Facebook.
I think that more and more people are using facebook everyday- email is becoming a much more rare way of communicating.
Facebook is becoming a much more popular option among family and friends. This is because not only does facebook have the messaging option that is available in e-mail, but it also allows friends to view each other's photos, and to 'comment' on each other's posts. It's a whole new way of communicating.
However, email is still a popular way for formal communication in the workplace, and it is alot more private than facebook.
I'm sure email will still be used in the future, just not as frequently as it was it was. If you've watched the movie 'You've got Mail', you'd know the laptops they use look like big bricks :P Technology has moved forward, and so has communication. And like Raya said- we still use our e-mails to sign up on facebook :)
I would agree with Raya and say that email is dying but not dead. And it probably will never too. Just as with ordianary letters, which are still sent and received by people all over the world, I really don't think we'll ever see a complete termination of email. But its future does looks rather bleak though.
Facebook gave almost an entirely new meaning to socializing. From connecting with distant friends, to posting videos, comments, and photos, Facebook and all the other social netwroking sites made an informal yet comfortable platform for people to interact with.
Yet, the formal and conventional stage that is present with email will not, as far as I see, eradicate any time soon, and so will remain for the time being.
I agree with Duwane on this one, the status of any social trend often depends on today's youth. Once we stop using E-mail and so on, the more doomed it is for the future. I've probably written and sent a letter once or twice in my entire life.
I'm not sure if the decline in such trends should be blamed on lazyness either, it's just that people are using the most efficient method available. And efficiency is in the eye of the beholder, as odd as that may sound. But it depends on their purpose for using the designated mailing system.
for example, people may need to get fast replies, therefore they will use social networking such as Facebook because majority of people check their Facebooks everyday and only check their e-mails every few days or even months!
I don't see Facebook as a professional setting nor do I see e-mail as a casual method.
I can't imagine email completely going into extinction. It's just becoming less influential, less used and less popular than facebook. Besides, doesn't one need an email account to create a facebook page?
I agree with Nikol.Facebook is, in my opinion, not really all that. Despite being a 'social networking site', it has somehow transformed people into obnoxious, self-indulgent beings. Statuses are updated every 5 minutes, about the most random irrelevant things. Pretty soon, some statuses will probably be like this:
"Breathing"
"walking"
"sitting"
To be harshly blunt, nobody really cares. -
Email is a more formal way to send messages, which is why it will never lose its appeal. They give off a sense of professionalism, who takes business seriously. Imagine giving your boss access to personal access to all your activities outside the office!
Personally I don't think email will COMPLETELY fade away and not be used. Yes, the youth of today tend to use social networks to communicate to and fro but as we get older and more serious in life we will find that we will start to drift back to emails and less of social networks as it is a lot more formal. Just like Nikol said about sending your boss or an employeer your CV over facebook, it just doesn't work. Although facebook is a very popular site it will never be aimed at the formal business related side but more to the social side of things.
I don't think email will disappear, because, it's got a lot of benefits that Facebook just doesn't have: privacy, attachments, and other stuff too, but it is declining at the moment.
In regard to what Nikki said, i don't have facebook, and i'm perfectly alright(i think:P).
We cannot say that people have stopped using e-mails or that e-mails have died because actually people are still using their emails. However lately emails aren’t being used as how they were used before, I mean years ago the only thin humans could send through was emails, whereas now the main source is facebook. People live on facebook and some say they live for facebook. That is how much people use facebook. Like Edeline said “I don't think email will disappear, because, it's got a lot of benefits that Facebook just doesn't have: privacy, attachments, and other stuff too, but it is declining at the moment.
In conclusion emails will not die not today, not tomorrow maybe in 10years though.
Actually no, I don't think email is dead. People still use it, not as often as they did in the past but it still is widely used. I mean wouldn't it be a little weird if Mr.Roberts posted on all of our walls on Facebook regarding assignments? Yeah, thought so. :P Also, Email is more formal and private and is a huge reason why I believe people WILL continue to use it.
Facebook is a lot more informal and there is nothing wrong with that. It is a very good way to keep in touch with friends and family. Also, news travels a lot faster on Facebook. From personal experience, when I ask people where they heard stuff from, their reply is "Facebook." I cannot agree more with what Raya said, 'if there was no email, how is everyone to register on Facebook?'
In conclusion, I believe Facebook and Email are both popular means of communication depending on different situations.
Emails are not dead, they're just used very scarcely compared to the usage of Facebook. Facebook is deemed to be a more efficient way of communication because almost everyone possesses an account(sometimes more than one) and are perpetually on it, resulting in quicker responses.
Emails will always be used for formal purposes such as business matters and so on,because personally, there is a need to sound formal whilst using emails.
Emails aren't dead, yet. I do feel like it's dying, though, and I feel like it's going to go on like this for a long time.
I don't feel like email is used to often anymore to get in touch with other people, but, like everyone above said, social networking websites are used more often.
I do feel like emails are just used for matters regarding business or formal issues, which I think is fine, and necessary. I believe that because of this reason, email will be kept alive, atleast for the foreseeable future. ..I would find it pretty odd if Mr Roberts started sending us facebook messages about our homework..
Hm as Moza said, less used but definitely not dead. Email I found is just less likely to be used by us younger ones. I'm sure we check it once in a while for school matters but Facebook is what majority of us use, almost everyday.
True what Edeline said that Email has benefits that Facebook doesn't but I guarantee that what it doesn't have now will come sooner or later. We might not have noticed but Facebook has changed a whole lot in the past years and I believe it still is very beneficial. Like what it says on the page "Facebook helps you connect and share with people in your life" It is probably the easiest, quickest way to share and connect. I just hate how I don't have the willpower to deactivate it during exams :p
