Totally like whatever, you know...

"I entreat you, I implore you, I exhort you,
I challenge you: To speak with conviction.
To say what you believe in a manner that bespeaks
the determination with which you believe it.
Because contrary to the wisdom of the bumper sticker,
it is not enough these days to simply QUESTION AUTHORITY.
You have to speak with it, too."

If Year 11's get an elocution contest this year... DIBS!

& once again: HAHAHAHAHAH, guilty as charged. I never realized the implications of my "y'know's" and "invisible question marks?"

HILARIOUS video and quite enlightening :p from now on, I will speak with conviction ...?

Hahahahaha (Y)

Ahahaha XD

This video was funny and yet it made me think a lot at the same time.

I have a fondness for using the word 'like' and 'thingy' :p

It is true though :0 It's weird how sometimes I just hear conversations that go like this:

"You know what? I'm so pissed off, coz I worked hard for that, you know? And you just like, ignored it like, you know? UGH You're like whatever!"

XD

I love how he pinpoints these issues with so much humour. Especially this one! Everyone knows it happens, everyone indulges in it, and yet no one really REALISES its happening. To reiterate what I stated earlier with even more poise and conviction: this man is a GENIUS! :P

Hahahahah xD

Oh my gosh! I’ve never really looked at my ‘’y’know’s’’ and ‘’like’s’’ in that kind of perspective.
And trust me, coming from a girl who uses ‘’y’know, like and thingy’’ A LOT, I’ve hardly ever noticed that people do actually tend to speak like that. Plus honestly no one really does anything about it, or even notices it, because like faiza said, not many people realise that we do incline to speak with ‘invisible question marks?’ and ‘likes's
Although from now on I'm going to try speaking with conviction.

LOL. He is like sooo right, we all talk like that nowdays, you know? cause its like so cool :P

I thoroughly agree with him. Although i admit enjoying using phrases such as "like" and "you know" quite often, A lot of us have been over-using it recently. Perhaps, Because everyone else has been possessed by these phrases of maybe because its simply considered cool.

Taylor mali managed not only to enliven us with his witty humor but also to bring us to realization of the "invisible question marks".

This man really is a genius! Most people, especially students, we hardly ever seem to realize that we are using "like" and "y'knows" in almost every sentence. And we're the ones who actually attend English class 5 times a week, so go figure. :P

First off, YAY DEF POETRY <3

Secondly, oh god, that was incredible to behold. I feel so conscious about what I'm saying, y'know? Like, this totally changed my whole perspective on things.

Or not.

Arrrgh, darn you forces of habit, that compel me to destroy the English language's intricate structure.

Like, yeah.

(Darn you Mehvash, I wanted this D:)

I must say I fond it very astounding how he decide to aproach this topic with such humour and yet still get the point across.
He has done a mighty good job yet honestly I still did not feel as though I have taken what was said as serous as it needs to be taken. Which would at times be a norml habit for me, as they say "in one ear and out the next". Though this is somthing I have been working to obtain, speaking with conviction.

Firstly, the mans a genius, but the pants. Just a little to high... Seriously.

But he makes a good point, somehow it's only when we start to make fun of it that we notice just how much it's taken over society.

^ Duwane, it looks like that was shot in the 90s - so his trouser style is literally from the last century!

Hahah, its funny how our "like's" and "y'knows" are often said subconsciously! We rarely ever notice them and I suppose it's because a majority of the people these days do tend to speak with 'invisible question marks.' :P

I like, totally love this video! No, like seriously, you know?
Hehe.
This was hilarious- but he's got a point as well. Its wonderful how he got his point across without being too serious- really, really good :)

This man is Brilliant, you know? :P

"thought you'd like to hop on with me on my bandwagon of uncertainty?" Love it!

This is very true though, unfortunatly the english language and the way people are speaking it has its recessions. People just don't speak in the opulent tones or with the words they used to. Society has become extremely lazy.

hehehehe ^^, i never actually thought of it like that....i wonder how the phrases such as *like you know* and invisible question marks frist came about?!?

Moza said...

This was really funny. Hats off to Taylor Mali (Y)

He made me realise how silly I sound when using such phrases. I mean, 'y'know' and 'like' usually comes out subconsciously but we really should stop using them as often as we do.

He also brought us to realisation of the 'invisible question marks'.

Im speaking with conviction from nnow onwards (:

I wasn't ever easily influenced to use "like" and "you know". I would only use these words to make fun of people. I think everyone has a cycle, where they repeatidly use a word or phrase. Good piece of literature, every school should use it.

Batul Bhatri said...

This is an eye opener! Nearly, all of us use these words in every sentence we say. And he did an amazing job showing us how dumb and unsure of ourselves we sound.

Hahaha that was such a cool video, I bet he thought people used it a lot then, if he's still alive now he'd probably go crazy....y'know?

Nikol said...

*Hahaha*

That video was very funny and very true. I dont think I can go a day without saying the word 'like'. (I've tried :P)

But sometimes it just comes in automatically with your vocabulary. For example the word 'like' is always used whenever you're reffering to someone that said something.

"I was like "whaaat?" and she was like 'noooo'..."

I guess we're just accustomed to using all these simple words than fishing for the right ones in our heads. :P

Why are we like, so like INTENT on like killing the language? Y'know?

HAHAHA, great video sir!

Unknown said...

WOW..That was just great. It's funny how many "you knows" and "likes" we use when speaking without even realising it.

Hahaha! Love his hand motions.

Unknown said...

Haha! so true.
We use them so often it's almost natural ^^

Especially when we go blank for the right word, what would we do without our replacement "Thingy"? :)

Love the "invisible question marks" part. Reminds me of Sarisha!

Second Shaday, great how he got the point across so well and managed to do it with such humor.

Yusra Shah said...

This was hillarious, absolutly loved it.
We dont actually realize this but the amount of times we use the words "like" alot.
And without knowing, we ourselves are killing such a beautiful language!!

Unknown said...

HAHA, that really was hilarious! :P
And eye-opening!
Like Teresa said, he got his point across and managed to do so without being rude, or too serious.
WIN. :)

Unknown said...

hahaha
I never really realised how we talk, i guess the whole "like" and "y, know" just comes without thinking when we speak. Yes it's the wrong way to speak but i dont think anyone will change because that's just the way we are.

Taylor Mali is all his absolute brilliance points out how foolish we sound when we talk in the "y'know" "like" ways. It's true that today a majority of us use it in our daily conversations without realising it, and this was indeed an eye opener.

Unknown said...

I completely agree with Taylor Mali on this one!
That was hilarious!!

No more need be said! :p

Shafnaa said...

Couldn't have addressed the issue better. B]
Rather than searching for the accurate word, we're so lazy,we substitute them with these "replacements" instead, in order to convey the message.

I'll probably start laughing when someone uses these phrases. :P

Unknown said...

AHAHAH! I agree with Taylor like totally ;)If you actually think about it, it doesn't really make sense. Using " You know" is an example. The person doesn't know therefor your actually telling him. It is now a kind of "Word addiction" and I just cant socialize without the usage of those words xP

Brilliant! I love his cynicism. Truly enlightening. Must improve the way I speak out loud.

Hahahahha (Y)

I'm with Mehvash on this one. Yet another person raising up her hand to being guilty of utilizing the words "y'know", "like" & "invisible question marks".

I love how he talks about something that's right in front of our faces but no ones really paid any attention to it. He also uses humour which entertained me quite a lot.

AWESOME VIDEO (Y) x

Suheir said...

First I would like to say that like the video was like totally entertaining you know?

Personally I have never realized the nonsense I am usually saying. Most people talk with so many ’y’know’s’ and ‘’like’s’’ which to think of confuses someone who doesn’t talk like that. Nevertheless from now on I will try to talk with conviction hopefully :P

Haha!
Wow. Funny and very true!
Bad habits that should be avoided! haha

Haha great video! its funny how true it is..

We seem to use these words and phrases subconsciously. They have a way of find there own into our vocabulary.
I like the way He jokes around but still puts a valid point across
