What's the secret of success? - 10,000 hours.
There's one figure that everyone takes away from Malcolm Gladwell's new book, Outliers: 10,000 hours. That, he says, is the difference between success and non-success, genius and mediocrity. Anyone from the Beatles to Bill Gates who has succeeded has done so on the back of at least 10,000 hours of practice. Plus, obviously, some intelligence and talent.
Do you agree?

I absolutely disagree. To say that playing amusical instrument has the same difficulty and challange of runing a multi-national corporation is absurd. To compare such things then say that there is a minimum amount of time you have to put in to be a success is preposterous.
Success comes in many forms, some jobs require much less effort than others, and therefore should take less time to master/gain experience in.
He's right, we won't go anywhere or accomplish anything if we don't work on it or practice it. And if it takes 10,000 hours to accomplish something, imagine how much time and practice it takes to be good at something! The 20 languages accomplishment definatly blew me away!
Well, at some point im going to have to agree with him. Accomplishing something is immpossible without hard work. Almost all outstanding achievements result out of nisus.
However, as Duwane has stated, some tasks require less exertion . So to these tasks 10,000 hours of practice may sound like an exaggeration.
I agree that a lot of hard work and effort is required to be successful.
However, i believe that passion is even more important. If you spend hours and hours studying or practicing something you don't have true enthusiasm for, Then its absolutely pointless!
If you truly want something and move mountains in order to achieve it, Then you will definitely be successful.
My reasoning comes somewhere in between agreeing and disagreeing. I think success is a combination of luck, opportunity, masses of knowledge and, as Raya said, passion , it depends on the person and various factors that usually contribute to success. An unfortunate, large group of people can practice all their live and never get anywhere because they just cannot act or have no rhythm whatsoever.
On the other hand there are some people just born to dance, paint, or even become an opera singer. People, with talent so good, you'd have to hate them on a personal level to not appreciate the awe inspiring evidence of genius, right there in front of you. These people are meant to succeed, no matter what happens!
I very much agree that too be successful in anything you need to put in the time and effort. Most importantly you need to have your mind set in being succesful, because if you practice something for years without the proper mind set all your practice was in vane. I also agree with Duwane that not everything requires the same amount of practice or the same practice strategies. For example a to achieve a complete law degree it takes no less than 7 years, but too get a complete doctor's degree you need about roughly 9-10 years.
I would have to agree that success comes with a lot of effort and practice, also I would like state that, once a person is successful will not always stay successful until or unless they keep getting better at it. Lets take Bill Gates for instance, he didn't stop at his first successful project but he kept advancing and producing a better product. That is what made him unique and still successful. If he had stopped on his first successful project, there would have been someone else who would have over taken him.
I think the secret of success is to practice and keep on practicing.
I agree with the fact that if you want to be successful, you have to work hard for it.... And let's face it, if you want to accomplish anything, you have to work hard. No matter what it is you're planning to do, starting from music to politics, from writing to sports.
But the I think whole "10,000 hours" was a bit exaggerated =/
well ofcourse it all depends on your determination, passion, and also motivation on be sucessful,,, i honeslty think without failure no one can turely be successful main reason cause when your life is always good,,,you will never know what's hardship,,,with that said i think the key to success is to failure, but only if you use our failure to better yourself, using it as a motivation.... however i dont think it takes 10,000 hours to became successful... that a little exagerated ^^,
I waver between yes and no in this case.
True, success doesn't arrive at your doorbell, knocking nor would it just fall from sky, into your hands. It requires PLENTY of practice and determination. It is also necessary for the person to be strong-willed and should be able to handle the circumstances of his judgments;good or bad.Sometimes, deny it or not, luck also plays a role.
10,000 hours seems like an overstatement because it depends on the complexity of the matter and the capacity of the individual who's handling it. Like Duwane said,it varies from job to job.
But hey, hard work will definitely pay off.(:
I disagree because I believe that there isn’t a point [10,000 hours being the point here] where you master what it is you want to achieve and in turn, are successful. You can grab a hold of success with much less than 10,000 hours of practice, or with much more, depending on what area we’re talking about, as some fields can prove to be easier and require less effort than others. What I’m trying to put forward is that, success isn’t a wall 10,000 hours away, waiting for you to work hard and hit it. But rather that success finds you according to the extent of your passion, your knowledge, the hard work you put in, and a good deal of luck.
I also completely disagree with Edeline. I do not believe that there are sets of people born gifted, and the rest, born otherwise.
Yes, some people have the flow to draw, paint or dance, whereas others, just lack in harmony. But like Raya mentioned, if you truly want something and are ready to move mountains to achieve it...
Then, indeed, mountains will be moved.
To the example that Duwane has presented, I would like to disagree.
I have played multiple instruments and I wont be shocked if it takes the same amount of time to perfect it as running a corporation.
Perhaps certain tasks require 10,000 hours of practice, but not everything or most things in fact, require 10,000 hours of practice. It's certainly not going to take you 10,000 hours to become amazing at Modern Warfare 2, or to play guitar. There are certain things might might require such a huge amount of time, like setting up a billion dollar company. 10,000 hours is equivalent to about 417 days so I would have to agree with the author, but to a certain extent.
I would agree as well as disagree.
Practice/Practicing plays a very vital role in becoming successful. And definitely 10,000 hours of practice is great! But I wouldn’t say that just 10, 000 hours of practice is needed to become great at something. It requires a lot more.
And we don’t just need practice, we need to be devoted, passionate towards whatever we are doing.
Yoan, 10,000 hours is just an estimate. Of course someone can play the guitar with less practice than that. I play the guitar fairly well, and I don't think I've put anywhere near 10,000 hours. But to be a GENIUS at the guitar - good enough to play in orchestras and to be part of professional rock bands - 10,000 hours is the bare minimum, I'd say.
To be honest I would definitely agree, I mean if your doing something that you've been doing for 10,000 hours in your life you would have a pretty high chance of being succesful at what you do. You can be good at what you do but to be extremely great then yes no doubt you need all that time for practice and so on.
I agree with Marwan in this one. To be successful at what you do would definitely take a lot of time. Take Duwanes example with being a musician and running a multi-national corporation, they are two totally different things. But I'm sure success comes in many ways, the musician must have studied music or learn how to play the instrument in order to be what he/she is now. The business stream of running a multi-national corporation on the other hand would also have to work hard for his/her success.
I tried clicking the link and it isn't working, so instead I read the blog post and the comments and tried to answer what I understood.:)
