Thunk 17:
Will Dubai ever be finished and ready?

Haha.. That question I feel is easy to answer, NO.
It has become quite obvious to the world, that when all the oil runs out, the GCC countries will perish. Therefore, Dubai has taken it all one step ahead and building on it's tourism factor.
All of it; the tallest building, largest aquarium, the different palms, the tallest hotel in the world, Atlantis, it all adds up to one thing--- tourism.
Untill the land is all used up, I feel that construction will go on. Even if Dubai plunges even more into debt, people will still flock to these locations. Maybe when the years go by, and everything gets even MORE modernised, then we might start building above the buildings itself. Who knows?

Well to measure this simply ask

"Will Dubai Land ever open up ?"

And No.

I could write a whole A Grade Article to how Dubai is near impossible to be finished and ready,

but does common sense really have to be written down ?

We can all easily see why it's almost never gonna be finished just by looking outside our window
(I can see the Burj from mine Haha !)

Then again, what's there stopping it ? look at UK that country is pretty much all done and ready not much else to improve on (other then the weather and the language and cars)

Nope... take a drive around dubai, ALL u will see is construction! Constantly new attractions are being built so that there's something to fall back on, afterall, it's inevitable that the oil will finish at some point in time. Once it is, the attractions will bring in money, and then newer attractions will need to built inorder to keep the flow of money constant. Yet again, no, it will never be finished and ready. There's always something or the other to build or improve.

NO. And the two main reasons for this is:
-whenever a project completes, a new one ALWAYS begins. I mean the ones meant to build tourism are really good. But what about the innumerable communities being biult? Look at the Discovery Gardens. You could actually fit half of the people living in Dubai only in there. So what is going to happen to the remaining projects that have been stopped?
-the recession. Dubai is already overflowing with half-completed constructions and is and will be unable to finish any of these unless we come out of the financial crisis. Which will not happen in the next 5 years (at the bare minimum) given that the government has already, only predicted a minimum of 1% increase in the economy in 2010.

You cannot say whether a Country will finish expanding or not. Everything is being aimed to be the tallest, longest, biggest, highest, first etc. All these will only be at their positions for a few years, and some other Country may aim to construct something even taller, even bigger or even higher than the existing projects. Which will again put Dubai in thought. This is because most countries want to prosper by havig more money generated in their Economy, with the help of foreigners spending in their Country. Foreigners will most likely be attracted to places that have an attraction which is titled as 'The Worlds....(Tallest, longest, highest etc.)'. So when Dubai finishes all its projects and is ready to watch people come and spend, thats the time when some other country might launch the similar project but with something extra added to it and thats when Dubai starts working again. So, Dubai or any other country, actually doesnt actually rest at all as it faces competitions from various countries. So Even if Dubai is done constructing and is ready, it will still keep working towards something even better. Its like some one asking, 'Will people ever stop inventing or will inventions ever run out?'

Hmm... I'm trying to imagine deep into the future when land is... No, just forget it.

Its never going to stop 20 to 30 years in the future when we seem to be lacking land, buildings will be demolished new, higher better buildings will be made to take their place and so on and so on. As for being 'finished and ready' for a place like dubai theres no real finish line. Its a meeting point of business and tourism, neither of which look to run out...

Unknown said...

Well, you can't really say when a place has 'finished' developing. Take the Twin Towers as an example. When it got bombed down, they didn't just leave the land barren: today there are new buildings reconstructed on that land. If you look at how Dubai was 50 years back, you wouldn't have imagined in your wildest dreams that it would grow to the magnificent wonder that it is today. However,a few decades down the line we can all confidently say it has come a long, long way. Cities like New York and London and Sydney didn't emerge in a matter of a few years. Construction and redevelopment never stops in any city; it's just that Dubai has tried, and succeeded in more ways than one, to climb up to the level of these renowned metropolises in a relatively short span of time. Kudos to them for achieving how much they already have!

No. Since when did any country in the world stop developing? No country in the world has stopped developing, simply due to advanced methods to modify or upgrade previously built constructions. Even if Dubai became a "developed" country, I doubt that Dubai, or any country in this case, will ever be finished and ready, in the sense that there are no more construction sites.

EliqaShaza said...

Haha. Good question.
My answer would be No :)
This is simply because Dubai as Priyanka said would be building on its tourism. Land could never really be ALL used up now can it? When old buildings become useless, dubai will demolish it to keep with the modern times. Even when Dubai is in debt, everyone would still be developing in Dubai. This is because Dubai has peaked in the tourism industry. Therefore allowing a huge population of tourists to visit.

Conclusion?
Dubai will Not stop building. There is just no point to stop.
when they are able to make a big income and profit. I'm not talkin bout now. Because now dubai isn't doing to well financially :p

NO I really dont think Dubai will ever be finished. There will alwase be a new building to build.

Unknown said...

Nope definitely not, although Dubai is in problems with debt and all other problems i believe that Dubai's construction will never end due to one reason"

"They strive to become the best"

Dubai always wants to have the best of everything in its land, the tallest man-made structure, the tallest hotel and so on and so on.

So nope, Dubai will never be ready I guess, until the day tourists stop coming here.

Jurgienne said...

People never ever will get content.

Sure, they may reach temporary happiness and contentment.

But at the end of the day, the grass is always greener somewhere else, there's always something to improve, and there's always another building just waiting to be built.

Dubai, somehow annoyed at even the presence of a miniscule area of bare sand, will never stop building new infrastructures.

It wont ever be finished.

It will never sit back, and finally say, "I'm done".

To top all that, while the people are busy working on one project, they dont hesitate to start and jump onto another one. Nothing has been finished, yet another one has been started!

:/

Come to think of it, as Mo said, a country will never stop developing.

It's not just Dubai.

Every single country in this world strives to attain perfection that they will never attain, because the standards just keep getting pushed higher and higher.

NO i highly doubt dubai will ever be finished!!! i mean just think of it we build something spectacular and then someone somewhere in the world builds something even better and there we go again trying to beat our own record!!!
besides tourism is the main source of income here in dubai the more we build the more people want to see!!!
and when our land runs out we build land from the ocean :)
im just looking forward to seeing what's next!!!

Unknown said...

Hah! No! Even when one project is incomplete another is being started!
I think that Dubai, as a whole, can never be "ready". Even if all construction is done, plans will be make to have bigger, better or taller buildings.
Even if Dubai runs out of money, the government will figure out a way to get funding! It's all a rat race..

Unknown said...

new constructions, new roads - its like a drug for dubai's government. theyre never satisfied with what they have. they want more, they want better, they want to be the best.

so naturally dubai will NEVER be finsihed and ready.

Nadine said...

I don't see why not. Not in the near future, definitely, but sometime ahead. I agree that this city's rapid construction is based on the tourism facto as well as the greed factor, but major cities that have been around for years are now stable as we know them. If we stop and ask ourselves how New York became New York, I'm sure the answer will be rapid construction and all-new ideas implemented in buildings and towers. We also need to bear in mind that Dubai is a very "young" city, of course it still has to be under construction!
I say it's going to be a long time until it's "finished," but I have no doubt that one day, probably by the next generations it will have stabilized and slowed down its pace substantially.

Unknown said...

I dont think Dubai will ever finish constructing. It could keep going on and on till even the desert area of dubai is completly filled. Like many of the others said, Dubai will fall back on the tourism factor which they are currently doing when oils runs out.

Payam H.D said...

It's not just Dubai that is always expanding or developing, but almost evry country in the world. Everyone has competition and everyone wants to be the best. Dubai's aim, though albeit somewhat irrational, does not require an explanation as it aims to have the tallest buildings, or the best and biggest malls. Dubai's main source of income is the tourists that come here, and so it tries to attract people from all over the world by incessantly attempting to build and perfect, which inevitably led to its long overdued downfall.

Batul Bhatri said...

No, I dont think so. They will just end up finding something or the other to do. When one plan is completed they will find some place that needs to be rebuit or is outdated and needs to be changed.

Tannya D said...

Personally, I feel one day dubai may actually be completely finished and ready. I doubt it would be anytime soon, seeing as the construction industry here is massive - but when they finally realise that there are excess buildings and houses than there are people; they would probably slow down the construction and eventually stop.
I'm pretty sure one day, they're going to be satisfied with the city Dubai has become. I mean, we have the worlds tallest building and the worlds largest mall... what more do we need?!

Yusra Shah said...

Nice thunk.
As most people have said. no
because:
1)like Arizza said "People never ever will get content."
2) development will never stop.. everyone wants to be perfect.

Unknown said...

Ofcourse not... Dubai is a developed country and continues to develop even more day by day.
whenever a project is completed, a new one always seems to arise.
Dubai has become one the most touristic countries in the world and has much to offer.
From the tallest building to the largest mall. Dubai has achieved a great amount of development and wont there.
construction is everywhere and i doubt it will ever stop in dubai :)

NO, Dubai will never be finished and ready. In that matter I don't think any country will. All countries want to be the best. And as for Dubai, like the slogans read- "Dubai is a map that is updated everyday;)"

I say YES. When I came to dubai 5 years ago, on sheikh zayed road towards jebel ali there was only Hard Rock cafe! Now there are hundreds of new buildings!
I agree that in the near future, Dubai will not be finished and ready due to its current financial position however once they are out of their debt I strongly feel they will complete Dubai.
The thunk asks : Will Dubai EVER be finished and ready? By using the word ever, Dubai can take as long as they need to be complete and im certain that given 20 odd years, Dubai should be complete!

Unknown said...

I think it will.
I agree the construction sites and all the noise everywhere is getting annoying and it seems like the constructions will go on forever, but if it's possible to create hundreds of buildings over the past few years, i think it would be possible for the current constructions to finish off in a few years' time.
I have been living in Dubai from the past ten years and seen hundreds of buildings been built in Dubai since then. Really, I think this city will be almost ready in the next ten or fifteen years.

it's posible as are quiet a lot of things in life but dubai needs to sort its self out before trying to do everything it wants. and it needs to wait for the economy of the world to improve bevfore it works itself into even more debt.
when i first came to dubai in 1998 on vacation, my parents thought that it wouldnt be able to keep on going at the rate it was, without hitting dificulty in its completion.

Unknown said...

i think it will yet it honestly depends how much more they want to develop it....like Bisma said Ive lived in Dubai all my life and it has really developed immensely since i was a little girl so i think it will in 10 to 15 years but it depends on how much more buildings they want to put up more than anything else i think their gonna run out of space sooner or later :P

Dubai is an "over achiever".

"Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world"

"The palm, 8th wonder of the world"

Dubai's economy runs on tourism.
Dubai needs to keep the rest of the world interested, so they build everything bigger and better.

Unknown said...

I do not think so Dubai would ever be ready and I'm sure they would always be construction.Living in Dubai my entire life Ive seen it evolve...there is always something new in Dubai.Sometimes its new roads , new malls or maybe just a new skyscraper.Honestly im tired of seeing construction around Dubai - enough with all that building and the continues change. If you do not use a particular road for a week or two - the very next time you are traveling you will see change.Im proud of being part of Dubai which owns the tallest building - which is one the most fastest developing cities..but is construction and change always required ? i guess i will always keep questioning myself.

Dubai has grown from a desert to a fast-paced, multi-cultural, business-minded, metropolitan city.
If it can achieve that in such a short span of time since independence, then I believe that it is certainly going to bag the title of a developed city very soon enough.
And if the matter is about being finished, then I dont think that its only city of Dubai that's in question. Every other city of the world is growing even today, including London and New York.
Dubai is in its dveloping phase, but when it is developed, its going to be in par and infact even better than any other city of the world. And even then it will still continue growing. So I guess, the answer to the question is no.

Mona. said...

No,i dont think they want to stop either.
Seriously,Tourism is all dubai can fall back on,As it is they're not doing very well with all the financial crisis & the recession that is going on.
The economy is falling & there are incomplete builidngs everywhere you go.
so no,I dont think dubai will ever be ready & finished.

Nnamdi said...

well i think that dubai will be finished and probably ready in about 40 years when they finally run out of space to construct.or i could be wrong maybe they might demolish the older building and recostruct them making it better.so dubai might never be finished.
