When you write your short story don't just focus on the story, include descriptions as well. Try and build up the suspense in the story - try and lead up to a climax or revelation, if you can.
It doesn't have to be a suspenseful story, it can also be a human interest situational story as well. Focus on all the writing techniques we've learnt in class.
The poems don't have to rhyme. I'd much rather you focus on sincerity of emotion and on creating imagery. Remember, good poems have an economy of words - they manage to compress lots of ideas, images, thoughts, and feelings in a few lines.
I look forward to reading your work. Good luck! :)
