Is it ok for students to mock or insult teachers on facebook? Should the school intervene if a child sets up an anti-teacher facebook page that is meant for students to post hurtful comments about the teacher?
I dont think that it is okay for any student to insult a teacher on a social website. Not only teachers, but anyone for that matter. The first thing that can be done is to report that person on facebook. Secondly if this matter is taken to the School and dealt with, maybe the Parents o that student might do something about it. And thirdly they can also make a complaint with the Police. I've heard some cases where someone posted a video of another person on youtube, and that person dint like it. He complained to the police and that person was charged a fine for hurting a person emotionally by uploading a video without his permission. I think there are number of ways to tackle this besides using the Schools Authority.
Agreeing with Sonal. It's very stupid to do, and it hurts the teacher, who is a human and is just doing their job. Reporting that person on Facebook will not result in something punishable enough to make that person stop, and the authorities most likely won't even look at it unless it's a threat, or a massive amount of people saying the insults (say at least 20 people), therefore that person might even increase their insult-spree, and I believe it is much better to confront the teacher, if someone has a problem.
The other side of this argument is what if the teacher really is picking on a person? Rare as it may be, students have no other option in which to express their problems, since telling the teacher their issue will result in punishment, and telling their friends isn't enough "payback". Still, it shouldn't be done.
That's terrible! I don't understand why people think they can do that...teachers are humans too, they have feelings and integrity. And really if someone has a problem with a teacher, they should sort it out themselves/talk to the teacher, there's no need for such extremist behaviour.. I know I shouldn't be stereotyping but normally people who make these groups and stuff are people who've been busted by the teacher or "the rebels". They should be reported and dealt with in school, not an easy solution, but a solution nonetheless.
Agreeing with the statements above, it is not at all a right thing to do; insulting a teacher or anyone for that matter on any sort of website, especially one as frequently used as Facebook.
I guess the best solution would be to report this to the higher authorities who can take a better control over the matter. As Ishita has said, that these who post the hurtful comments are usually in some way on bad terms with the teacher, otherwise the person could just be stupid and cruel.
Generally, forming groups that insult anyone or anything ( a religion for instance) is NOT acceptable. I just wish those people would, for just one second, truly put themselves in the involved party's shoes. If I were personally being insulted, I would be hurt. Since Facebook is not exactly famous for its sensible members, I wouldn't make too big a deal out of it, though.
Still, I think in a case like this, the parents need to be contacted and informed of what's happening. I'm all for privacy, but there are limits that shouldn't be trespassed.
In general it is a very wicked thing to do to ANYONE. We aren't kids anymore, we realize that teachers do not just sit at their desks overnight during school waiting for us to come back anymore. Like Nadine has said, "I just wish those people would, for just one second, truly put themselves in the involved party's shoes.". I agree, people don't think about the possibility of the situation turning on them in the end. Also like Mo said, "what if the teacher is picking on the person?" I mean it isn't a common thing to be victimized by a teacher, but if it happened to me it can happen to anyone. Still it doesn't make it okay to form a hate group. I most definitely believe teachers should take action in any form.
to insult a teacher on a social website is a horrible and pathetic thing to do. the only reason i think of why people do it on sites like facbeook is because they have no guts to stand up to the teacher or anyone for that matter and say it out loud. people stoop so low when they create pages like this.
and yes, of course the school should intervene. if someone had created a bad page about me, or said something really nasty about me on facebook, id stand up to that person, cause at least i have the guts to do that. so why shouldnt teachers stand up for themselves too?
im not gonna deny that ive never said some bad things about teachers, cause i have, but ive only done that out of pure rage.. and i wouldnt do something so ridiculous like announce it to everyone on facebook
It's a bit like cyber bullying if you go to see. People who don't have the guts to stand up to someone, to stand up for their ideologies because they know they will be mocked or punished for it, are the kind of people who turn to forming groups on social networking web-sites such as facebook. If they were smart enough, they would realise that creating a webpage isn't going to change or prove anything.
But it's obvious that these are people with subnormal intellect and understanding of issues. Or just a bunch of people with WAY too much free time on their hand. Either way, I think the smartest thing to do is to not take their imbecile acts seriously bearing in mind that they are, after all, cerebrally deprived.
It's not a proper thing to do, but i don't see why there is such an outrage. It's immoral, hurtful and childish, but in reality it happens every day everywhere. It may not be as extreme as to say that the students hate someone, but there's always someone who is angry at some teacher for whatever reason. With the progress if technology, the idea that everyone is entitled to a opinion and the decreasing respect towards teacher creating or joining a group that says "I hate Mr/Mrs X" has become as normal as joining a group that says "I hate peanut butter and jam". It's highly exaggerated because most people in that group don't really mean it, but I don't see a way of changing it. People's attitudes are changing and if such groups where banned it would lead to more people wanting to join anyways...
Its understandable that not all teachers will be loved and worshipped by their students. But posting this hate on a social networking site, knowing that others will see it... Stuff like that should be punished just as if it were being said face to face. But there's a fine line... Sooner or later some people will classify it as an 'invasion of privacy', if staff from my school were watching what i did on facebook I just might call that stalking...
Teachers hold their respect in the society. Infact every individual has his respect. So just because we dont like them doesnt mean we can insult them publicly. And teachers help us learn, after all. Everyone must take a stand against this starting with reporting the offender to the right authorities...
this is a classic case of people abusing these social networking sites!!! and it really frustrates me that people think they have a right to insult teachers, elders friends and siblings on networks like these and its an absolute shame!!! i really dont find it funny and it just ends up extremely nasty!!! we need to stop people like this!!
No, I don't think it's acceptable. Maybe a wall post to your friend about how so and so teacher did so and so things and how you hate him, but creating a whole page is ridiculous.
I think the school has every right to intervene. While outside school, the student can no longer be dealt with as a student but there is no reason a teacher cannot take action simply as a member of society.
Most definitely NOT.It is a cowardly act posting insults not only about teachers but anyone on a social website. The school should by all means do something about it. Aisha Bashir 10g2
I think its terrible that students have to set up pages to insult teachers. Teachers are also human beings and I think that doing a serious matter like this can become very dangerous. I think the school should intervene as they should stop the page.
I don't think is acceptable at all. Making fun of the teacher is one thing but creating an anti teacher facebook page is way out of line. I think the school should intervene if such a thing was to happen.
its rude to make a hate group about a teacher .. but people do it anyway and yes . everyone wants the school to intervene . but think about it .. a school can only do so much and even if the school DOES intervene. another hate group will appear .. which will be even more discrete than the last one . but YES , the school should intervene because its morally wrong . it definitely should .. but the real question is .. what will the school actually do ?
agreeing with kris .. everyone is entitled to their own opinion and with the availability of new technologies and the addition of new and creative means of expressing their hate even if we exercise authority over these acts , i don't see things changing anytime soon
Without a doubt, never, I mean setting up a whole anti teacher page on facebook that’s a lot (beyond). Yes I think the school should intervene, to try and stop it (if possible).
It is terrible to have anti-Teacher groups or pages on the internet. Respect for a teacher should remain within the school as well as outside. It is a shameful act by any student to do such a thing. The school must try their best to stop those students. If required theparents must be informed aswell.
I know teachers can be pissing at times but it's sad,to have such cases.Therefor If I hated a teacher I would tell it to her,but fortunately all teachers are fine. :P
I think that if the someone has problems or issues with another person, they should release it but to the stage where that anger becomes offensive, is where they should learn that enough is enough. Communication is key in these situations and misunderstandings arise often. Get both sides of the story out, teacher-student relationships are important and it's smart to keep it alive.
I do not think so its ethical for a student to do so but i guess that's the only way they can voice their opinion - but i do realise its not a good way of voicing ones opinion .In my previous school they were many groups which were against school and i was part of a particular group not because i supported it just because i got so many requests for the acceptance of the group that i was actually forced to.I guess its not right for anyone to do such things and im sure its like cyber crime and actions would be taken against such people. As far as i remember detention was what i got :)

My former school has plenty of hate groups against staff, but personally I believe that this is downright disgraceful! However I don't think that the school authorities deserve to interfere simply because it is an invasion of privacy. So this may seem cliché but "WHY CANT WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?"
