Orwell's "1984" and Government Power

In 1989, Chinese students staged a protest against the government in Tiananmen Square. The government sent in tanks to put down the protests and gunned down hundreds of students. Watch the video to see the bravery of an ordinary man (could easily have been Winston from 1984) who was on his way home from shopping. He put his life and his family's life at risk by stopping an entire convoy of tanks on his own. In preparation for our book club discussion, please inform yourself about what transpired at Tiananmen Square. Find out what happened to this man.

The way the tank tries to dodge past the man is slightly humorous. Nonetheless, the guy's got guts.

Wow, if they dont mind killing all the students, why didn't they kill the man?? but yes he has wat it takes! Courage!

I disagree. It doesnt take guts or courage to pull off an act like that. For that man it was surely years of frustration built up then randomly expressed due to the same sort of anger around him.

I'm not going to go on because I reckon this is precisely the sort of thing we will be discussing in class about the book.

Sir, no-one knows what happened to the man, they don't even know his name, nor have they heard him speak. The maximum information given from the internet is an interview, in which a woman sees him get pulled away by two men, presumably not military but mere civilians who were supposedly trying to protect him, but no information thereafter, and the woman assumes he is still alive and in hiding.

That's what I don't understand. If the army had been ordered to 'take care' of anyone in their way, why didn't they just run over the guy? I'm not saying that they should have. Although, the soldier in the tank must have been taken completely by surprise, and didn't know what to do. The brave man, sincerely had a LOT of guts!

Answering Mo's question based on the info I've obtained;

Apparently, the man had been pulled away by a couple of civilians who were standing there in observation. Afterwards, they(the army) captured him and after 14 days, had in fact executed him.

It has been said that this event is forbidden to be spoken about out loud, even today. The government actually illegalised it. The rest of the information has been lost in the Chinese media, even websites come up blank. Not many know what really happened that day, and those who do are too afraid to talk about it.

Wow...I agree with Payam, why wouldn't the tank just run him over? Though he was very brave and courageous. The governments seriously hate anyone making them feel inferior.
