What causes seasons?

A shockingly large number of people don't know why we have seasons. Most seem to think it's because we are closer to the sun in summer and farther away during winter. This is far from the truth. I know this has little to do with English. But it has everything to do with general awareness - as did the previous post.

Please watch this very brief and enlightening video clip that will explain why we have seasons.

ooh, i had no idea about that. i was actually under the impression that seasons are caused by how close or far we are from the sun, as you mentioned!

Hahah!!The narrator’s voice was so funny.
Fascinating video though..explained really well.

I agree with Yusra on the narrator's voice x)

I never really thought about what caused seasons, I just figured they were a sort of natural process. Well, now i know !

...Yeah, I knew that. But what shocked me that some (apparently) most people don't know why.

Once again i hope more people see that, our general perception of the earth is pretty messed up. Not only do we think that North HAS to be "there" but we think the world is perfectly straight.

Days are caused by the rotation of the Earth right? So, what is caused by the revolution? A month or a season or Months and Seasons both?

I hope you are not part of the 19% of Britons who think the earth rotates around the sun once every month.

Seasons have nothing to do with months. A month is just an arbitrary division of the year. We could have two months a year if we wanted (with approx. 182 days in each month). But we choose to associate our months with the moon - which roatates round the earth once every 28 days.

One year is the period it takes for the earth to revolve around the sun once. Closer planets take less time and farther planets take more time.

So in the time it takes for Pluto to revolve around the sun once (1 Pluto year) Earth would have revolved around the sun 250 times (250 Earth years).

Sir, the Earth doesnt rotate around the Sun every month. Thats what most of Us know. It takes 365.25 days for the Earth to rotate around the Sun. Which is why the fourth revolution is a leap year. But I was confused for a moment as I couldnt recall a definition taught in a Science Lesson. Whether it was Seasons or wheter Months which are caused by the Revolution of the Earth around the Sun. After watching the video and checking the images, I was sure that seasons are caused by a Revolution, but I thought what about Months?

Well now I know again, that its the four Seasons that are caused by a Revolution. But We can say Months are part of the time the Earth takes to revolve around the Sun. You cant say months have nothing to do with seasons because, months help Us record the change in Seasons.

I like how you started your post.

Certainly Im not part of those 19% of Britons but I can say that I am a part of those 15% of people of the World whose Country is believed to be the first to have crystal clear clarity that the Earths Revolution around the Sun caused the shift in Seasons. (Not Months as there were none at that time.) [No Hard Feelings]

^ Sonal Agreeing with you - except I reiterate seasons have little to do with months - summer, autumn, winter, spring don't start on exact dates - some years winter comes early some years later - sometimes differences of up to two months. Also, it's winter here now, but summer in the southern hemisphere. You could have 14 months if you wanted or 20, or 15 - it's just an arbitrary division. What's fixed is the number of days in a year - that cannot be changed. Which explains why we have different calendars - the Western Gregorian calendar that we all use, the Julian calendar before that, the Islamic calendar and so on - different ways of dividing a year.

Wow. I already knew that though. I studied about the Earth and it's seasons in my geography classes back in year 5-6.Incredibly interesting though! What I find difficult to understand is that supposedly many in the world don't know this level of general knowledge information.

Happy new year everyone!! 2010 here we come!! :p

I learnt that in Geography classes in 7th grade. Never understood a word my teacher said though, so this was like learning for the first time.

"When more of the suns energy hits the southern hempisphere.." Haha her voice changes so drastically there! Her voice IS hilarious!

Informative video otherwise, I didn't know it was because of the tilt, I thought it was only because of the Earths rotations.

Wow, that was interesting, I was questioning myself what does cause seasons.
But I already knew it :P

Interesting! I had no idea why there were seasons and for some reasons didn't even think about it! Perhaps because science isn't on good terms with me :P

Nice video it clearly and concisely explained what causes seasons when I looked at the question I stopped for a second and asked myself did I know the answer. I couldn’t really recall what exactly what caused seasons but I was pretty sure I had the answer in the back of my memory.
