Thunks - 13

A Thunk is a beguilingly simple-looking question about everyday things that stops you in your tracks and helps you start to look at the world in a whole new light.

Thunk 13:
Where does the sky begin and end?

Now that is something I wonder everyday; everytime I look at sky.

It's like the saying: A circle has no beginning.

What comes first, the chicken or the egg?

Where does the Universe begin, and where does it end?

I can go on and on; isn't this one of life's greatest mysteries? But personally, I feel it has no beginning OR end. It's just; there. Engulfing our Earth.

This really depends on your definition of sky; what we look up at? How do we know where to draw the line, of where the sky then merges with outer-space.

Where the ozone layers end, I don't that can be considered the 'end' of the sky, because when we look at the 'sky' we talk about the stars that we see, and the sun shining bright in the 'sky', which is all PAST the stratosphere, mesosphere, etc.

There are so many metaphors, which include phrases like 'I believe I can touch the sky'. Realistically, that is not possible; if we shoot up, we'll just go on and on, as there is no END that we know of. Which is why it is just a metaphor; it is to signify how we can go on and on, reaching no end, just striving to better, to reach as high as possible.

So I guess this just depends on your perspective of what exactly the sky is; just a blue open stretch of spaces we look up at? Or a safe-zone until we reach space, a border of sorts? Or anything else?

The sky is infinite. It has no beginning AND no end.

It really makes you stop and wonder, doesn't it? There are so many mysteries in life, many of them solved, though countless more left.

I guess that's why the phrase; "I can touch the sky" is used all the time and also has a lot more meaning than what it reveals, because it doesn't just mean that you're reaching up for a great level or altitude, but the endless, infinity which surrounds the universe, aiming for the end with no end!

Its like a circle, it has no beginning and it has no end.

But if I were to think logically, I would like to think that Greenwich is the start of the sky. :P

But really, what is the sky? Word webbing gets me the view from earth of the atmosphere etc. But the atmosphere has no precise end either..

The atmosphere has no precise end - but it definitely has an end - the atmosphere doesn't extend infintely out to space.

To give you some scale of how thin the atmosphere around the earth is: imagine the earth scaled down to an average globe on a desk. Now imagine the thin plastic coat that glazes the surface of the globe. That thin glaze is how thick the earth's atmosphere is (if you increase the scale). That's the narrow band in which earth can support life above land :)

What is the sky, though? The sky could be anything that you see above you (no ceiling jokes, tyvm) depending on...where you are I guess?

There is no end. Or, at least, not that we've discovered. I can't imagine the sky having any boundaries and even if it did, what would be beyond it? What is nothing?

Personally, I don't...want the sky to end. It's hope for me that there's something you can always count on being there unconditionally. "The sky's the limit" but the sky has no limit.

excuse my ramblings, i'm sick and miserable. sob.

Hmmm...
The sky is infinate.
It has no end and no beginning.
Its just like a circle it just keeps going and going.
yet it never fails to amaze us.

The sky is simply there. We can constantly think about this all the time but what would be the fun of it. Thats obe of the miracles of life to be honest. There are things we simply cannot explain.

At the end of the day i would say that the sky has no end and no beginning. :)

The sky does not begin, and it does not end. It is infinite, it exists in it's own reality. Even better would be: "Why doesn't the sky begin and end?"

Unknown said...

thank god mo nour dint write an article on this! and i actually agree with him.

the sky is infinite. there is no clear marking as to where it begins and where it ends.. its just one of those things where you dont get a proper answer. its like the answer to "where did the world come from" and the answer would probably be "no one knows."

Nadine said...

It has no limits. Just one of those things which, no matter how much thought we put into it, we will never be able to figure it out.

Mr. Roberts said...

Agreeing with Nishika and Nadine - there are no clear limits to the sky - but only when you define "sky" as that which is above us. However, when we talk about "blue skies" referring to the beautiful azure dome above us, then there is a definite end.

The sky is not blue on Mars, or Venus, or Jupiter or any other planet in our solar system. It's blue on earth mainly due to the predominance of Nitrogen and due to a process called Raleigh's scattering in which photons of sunlight are scattered in a particular manner by molecules in our atmosphere. This is also the reason why the sky is red at sunrise and sunset.

However, the atmosphere has a definite limit above which the "sky" will appear black (with trillions of stars, of course).

So I suppose one way of looking at it is to say the "sky" ends where the atmosphere ends (about 100km above us)

The Sky Began about 3 billion years ago.

It will end either on 2012 or when ever The big man relises that he left the earth on.

Unknown said...

To be more "Adequate"

The Sky is alot like the Universe or like God.

There all really big. They all have no beginning or end. They just are.

And without them we won't be here.

Maybe we should take better care of it..............

Yusra Shah said...

I have always described the sky as limitless, boundless, and infinite and I never knew that the sky actually ends where the atmosphere ends.

Victorion said...

There is no sky to be honest; i would say we have a sort of atmospheric shield that divides earth from the universe. This just means that what we can see when we look up is space.

There is also another way of looking at this thunk. We only talk about how the sky has no end as we look 'up'. We do not talk about looking straight ahead. On earth if we look straight ahead, it looks like the horizon is the 'end' of the sky.

Unknown said...

The sky is infinite, has no limits. Its just like asking what came first chicken or egg.

Personally I don't think there is an end or beginning.

Its is a mystery and why don't we just let it be the way it is. Rather than that we should try not to pollute the atmosphere, environment.

Unknown said...

The sky surrounds the Earth. The Earth is round. Round = Circle. A circle has no beginning and no end.

Conclusion: The sky has no end and no beginning :)

^ Good one Myra! :)

The sky has no beginning and no end. It is never ending.Where ever you go, anytime you go you will never see a boundary in the sky.

The sky has no beginning or end. To be looking for the beginning or end of the sky would be like running in circles, and eventually, you have no choice but to give up.

It's just there. Infinite. Going on endlessly.

The whole 'it ends when the atmosphere ends' thing makes sense tho. :) It was one of the first answers that came to mind.

This thunk made me think of the horizon. No idea why =/

And Mehv, the chicken came first. :P Theory of evolution XD

For us, it has no beginning nor end. It is like covering ourselves with a thick blanket. It would create blackness to surround us, where we cannot see the seams of the blanket. Similarly, the sky is like a cover. But instead of the blackness that covers us, it is the vast and never-ending blue colour that covers us wherever we go.

Anonymous said...

I always sort of thought of the sky as a blanket. For example when we go from day to night the blanket sort of shifts and the sky reveals itself. Which led me to wonder, "which sky is the blanket". It is sort of like that zebra question " Is it black with white stripes or white with black stripes?" Here I am left with another drifting thought.

I dont think it has a beginning or an ending!
it just simply engulfs our planet,Just like Mehvash said,A circle has No beginning.
and neither does the sky..

Unknown said...

the sky begins on the ground and were it ends no body knows.

Unknown said...

I have the same opinion as most of the people who commented. The sky has no begining or an end, it just goes round and round around Earth.

Unknown said...

I think there is no end to the sky it is a reflection of the oceans and the sea. The sky is so beautiful and i feel that its like a blanket around the earth. Its just always going to be there it has no end or beginning.

Nnamdi said...

in my opinion the sky has no begining and no because ,as myra said the world is a circle.
