Thunk 21:
If you don't remember a dream, then did you have it?

No. I would go with no, it did not happen. You very simply have nothing to prove it did happen, and no one else has any memory of it.

Why so unsubtle? Because its all about history and its importance, you just have to think that all we know about the past is what people have noted down and remembered, I'm almost certain there are much more exciting and important things that have happened in the past... But just havent been passed on.

If you don't remember something, have no proof or evidence that it happened, with just the suggestion that humans dream... It didn't happen.

Of course! You will have had the dream even if you cannot remember it. If you don't dream that pretty much means you're dead so I'd wager that even if you have no recollection of the dream, you've had it nonetheless.

It has happened to me so many times, hell I'm having a hard time remembering much about my dream last night! A dream is just as natural as any other limb or organ of your existence and you need them in order to stay sane. Dreams help overcome or face emotional obstacles that you may have encountered during your day, which are passed on to your subconscious mind in the form of dreams.

Just because things are not remembered doesn't mean they did not take place.

Same goes for the opposite.

Just because people say something happened and produce 'proof' of it, doesn't necessarily mean that the event occurred.

This somehow reminds me of 1984, in which people talk about how they 'remember' stuff taking place, even if they were complete fabrications, while they deny the occurrence of an event that DID take place.

:p

haHow do you even know you had it in the first place if you have no memory of it?

But yes I understand this to an extent; sometimes, I have vague ideas of what I dreamed about, but I find it impossible to recollect the whole dream. The harder I try to remember, the more I forget. I think about something and wonder whether it's just my imagination or if I actually did dream about it.

So yes, maybe not in all cases, but you don't necessarily have to remember a dream to have had it. We have dreams every night but don't remember half of them.

Oh i just thought of this today:

What about the people who do things while they are under the influence of alcoholic beverages, thus rendering them unable to have any recollection of what they've done the following morning?

Something still happened, even if they have no memory of it.

Many have said that if a dream is not remembered then how do you have proof that it even happened?

First, what are dreams, what is the science behind it?
REM [Rapid Eye Movement] cycles.

I had always wondered why eyelids move when people are asleep even though they are unconscious.
REM cycles are a period of different lengths where one "dreams" about something in their subconscious. Complete paralysis of the body results in no movement even when you are the star of your own dream and frolicking around in it [:P]
During the hours of sleep, the body alternates between the "dreaming stage" and the "resting stage" at which the brain "rests" for a period of time.
(Ever had that feeling where you feel like you're falling off of the bed even though its a flat surface? It is basically because you are coming out of a dreaming stage and in a stage of lighter sleep during the transition. And were probably frolicking around)
On an average, it is known that humans have about 4 to 7 dreams every night.
NO human does not dream EVER unless in a certain case of extreme psychological disorder.
It is also a fact that within 5 minutes of waking up, you have forgotten half of your dream and within 10, 90% of it. The "details" that one remembers are only those that seem logical.

Therefore, just because one does not remember a dream, does NOT mean you did not have it.
I rest my case (:

Technically, if you have even a slight idea as to whether the dream happened or not - then yes, you had it. But if you recall nothing whatsoever of having a dream the night before then ofcourse you haven't, there's no evidence to prove that you have. It's all inside your head after all, and if you remember it happening it did, if you don't, it obviously didn't. When I talk about remembering a dream I mean even having a vague idea of it. Forgetting bits and parts is just normal, ofcourse... but forgetting the whole dream would make it nonexistant.
When you drink too much and forget the events of your um purposeful night then theres usually other people who tell you what you did or didn't do. If there ISN'T anyone to tell you, all you'd remember of it is probably just passing out. However, when it comes to dreams its all part of your imagination; and if you can't remember it, no one can.

I would say probably bacause just because you dont remember something doesnt mean that it did not occur. our subconcious mind sometimes play tricks on us and on other times is selective with the obsorbtion of things that surround us. Dreams occur in our state of deep sleep and it does invariably happens that we may not remember our dream.

Nikki said...

Well, technically yes. You only remember a few of the dreams (we have at least 4 to 6 i think) and when we wake up we only end up remembering one or two right? so if you think about it, you DID have that dream but you just don't remember having it.

Duwane.A said...

I won't say its completely absurd, and I won't argue with the results of scientific tests and observations if I havent seen them.

But its the simple fact that a dream is from your imagination. When you wake up and try digging into your memory, whats not to say that your imagination is IMAGINING what you dreamt? Not your memory recalling what actually happened?

Unknown said...

Of course it is, its just a dream that you forgot.

...Ooh, okay.

My approach to stuff like this is that unless proven false, everything is true.

Then again it could go the other way as well buuut I prefer a more optimistic approach. But there I go again, digressing.

Back to relevance, sure, why not? I think we dream all the time. Every time we close our eyes, I think our brains stimulate some sort of image or scenario or something of the sort for us to see. When you're asleep, you may not remember all of it, but you do remember bits and pieces, right?

People talk about how they never have dreams but I think that's just because they can't recall them. I mean, everyone's different. Maybe you just didn't dream something profoundly memorable. Doesn't mean you didn't dream. You just didn't dream anything interesting :3

So, yeah. Unless proven that, no, if you don't remember your dream, you didn't dream I will continue to believe everyone dreams every single night. Or day. Depending on your Zzz-catching habits.

I decided to do a little more research regarding memory of dreams. As we know, dreaming usually takes place during the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage of your sleep, which happens about 4-7 times in one night.

"REM is controlled by the excitability level of the cholinergic neruons. Noradrenaline and seratonin are missing in the brain when in the dream state. These chemicals allow the brain to carry out task, solve problems and remember things. This is a reason why you find it so hard to remember your dreams."

So that would be the scientific reason as to why we can't always remember our dreams when we wake up, even if they DID take place.

... D: all this scientific research is making me feel uninformed.

Well I am definatily one who can NEVER remeber what I dreamt last night, but like priyanka was saying, I have quite a few every night, some I remember, and some I don't remember the dream necessarily. But I do remember having it. It's sort of like a deja vu, "or is it spelt voo?" Basically, my answer is, Just because you can't remember it doesnt mean it didn't happen.

Mehvash:] said...

Haha Neiha, I didn't know all this stuff either :P I just blindly believed that just because we don't remember dreams doesn't mean we didn't have it.. but since people were opposing it, I decided to get some proof to back up my answer? :P

imposible to say if you did or didn't.
some people hve bad memories and they forget things easily, so just beacuse they dont rember it dosen't mean they didn't have it

Like alot of people have already said-you dont remember the dream but you do remember having one. Aswell as that sometimes you remember parts of your dreams. But the confusing bit is sometimes you don't remember dreaming at all and you wonder wether you've dreamt or not,i usually conclude that i just didn't have one so i don't really know which side to pick here :P

Yes, I would say you did have a dream even if you don't remember it because we're speaking in factual terms here. Did you have a dream? Yes. Do you remember it? No, but that's a different story. Let's not forget that there's always the chance you might run into something or someone during the course of the day which might jog your memory and make you remamber the dream you had. Then what? Did the dream just pop into existence halfway through the day whilst your awake? Of course not. For these reasons I would say yes, you did have a dream even if you don't remember it.

Yes, I think that even if you dont remember the dream, it did happen. It's like the old question, "If a tree falls down in the middle of the forest and no one hears it, did it fall?" Well, yes it did fall, just because no one heard it, doesnt mean it didnt happen, you might not remember memories from when you were a baby but that doesnt mean that it never happend.

^ Yoan you've just mentioned a Koan (rhymes with Yoan! :)

However, I believe the Koan is "If a tree falls in the forest and there was no one to hear it did it make a sound?"

Yes!
Our memory consists of events that have occured and most of the time we are unable to remember all of them. With dreams, the only problem is that you have no-one to remind you of refresh your memory.

Batul Bhatri said...

Yes, definately! Just because you dont remember it, it doesnt mean it didnt happen.. Like sleep-walking or talking in your sleep, you might not remember doing it but you did!

I do/say alot of things and dont remember if I ever did them....so I guess the same would go for dreams!

Yes! If you don’t remember having a dream you have still dreamt of something. It is scientifically proven that when you dream, if you don’t wake up five minutes after you forget half of your dream and if you don’t wake up ten minutes after your dream you generally forget all of it. Most people wake up straight after they dream even though it seems that you have slept a while longer.
A lot of times people don’t remember dreaming but a matter of fact is that later on a while after being a day, a week even months after they will experience a de ja vu. They say this is “situation” had happened in one of your past dreams.

P.s I hope I have convinced you people :)
