A Thunk is a beguilingly simple-looking question about everyday things that stops you in your tracks and helps you start to look at the world in a whole new light.
Definitely yes. In fact, everything is a toy, we just need to know how to play with it. Actually, I don't have much to say about this, a pretty straightforward answer. A car, a doll, a game, a plane- all objects that you play it and amuse yourself with, with a little bit of creativity you could do the same with a stick. It even extends to people now that I think of it...
Yes, actually anything can be a toy it's just how you utilize it, it's how imaginative or creative you are that makes it into a toy :) i think you're going to be getting the same answer out of everyone :P
A stick for sure is a toy. Specially for pets. Your pet dog can play fetch with a stick the whole day without getting bored. You can do all sorts of things with a stick. You can have a tyre rolling race with the help of a stick. You can use a stick to make music, if you bang it against a metal plate or a drum set. You dont really need other things along with a stick to enjoy or make it a toy. A stick can act as a toy even when its all by itself. You can use a stick to improve your balancing skills. You can use a stick to count or make letters and shapes by breaking the stick into smaller ones. There is so much to do with just one stick. Its a toy for sure, whatever you classify it as, an Educational one, an entertaining one, a useless one or a musical one.
It depends actually, if it's just some silly old twig from the garden then yes it's a toy, but a very lousy one at that. I mean, sure you can play with it, be amused by it and all of that, but I guess I'd rather have a remote controlled car to play and amuse myself with. :)
On the other hand, if it's nicely carved and polished into say, drumsticks? Then it's a toy people pay as much as much as a few hundred Dirhams for! It's all about presentation in this big, bad, materialistic world, :P
Mr Roberts, in answer to your question, I would be happy to have a stick for my birthday, one that has been present for hundreds of years, one that has lived through past and present, and consider it a toy. Before all our machines and artificial things, we actually used to play with sticks, and we used to play games that we find extremely boring today, such as spinning a cart wheel (made out of wood).
A toy does not neccessarily mean something that is new, or big, or looks good, or anything luxurious. A toy could be your finger, for example, or your hair, or your leg. So why can't a stick be a toy?
See, a toy can be classified as so many things, but, it all comes down to something that gives us some sort of pleasure, or recognition, and this includes a stick. A stick, to most, is a mere piece of wood, but, it has probably seen things that we could never see, felt things that we could never feel, and even be things that we could never be.
Did you know a mere stick holds more information than a computer? Not because its a guess, but because it is natural, and is full of life. So, if I recieved a stick, I would be happy, and I would treasure it (even though I would rather have a laptop or an Ak47 BB gun, gas powered and up to 100 meters in range, with an infra-red scope), because it is so extraordinary.
A better thunk would be: Is a stick worth more than a computer?
Yes, a stick is worth more than all the computers in the world combined. Also, you can shape a stick, you can combine sticks, you can extract cells from sticks, you can do so much to a stick, to make it a toy, if its not already, in its plain form.
I believe it is a toy, for it was all we had some centuries ago, and we have been pulled away from it, from nature itself, for it was as interesting as a computer was, back then, whereas today, no-one will think twice about breaking a stick, or glancing at it, and that has to count for something.
One more thing, every toy we get, we eventually get bored of it, and thrust it aside, and, eventually, forget about it. Look at a stick. It was a toy, centuries ago, but it has seemingly been forgotten, but that does not mean that it is no longer a toy, just a forgotten one.
Of course it is. Its the fact that our imaginations can turn items of no interest into wonderous pieces of excitment and intrigue.
Its not suprising to see our 21st century kids giving up on the computer or the games console, to go play a game once played by their grandparents who didnt have such devices. And its just because they stimulate the mind through imagination to give the same effect... Just in a much simpler cheaper form.
What Im trying to get at is that even if it is a stick, its quite possible for anyone (Not only children) to get some entertainment out of it, therefore we can call it a toy.
I think a stick could be a toy. As the above statements state what i'm about to mention; a toy could be defined as something that entertains an individual, based on that individual's creative imagination.
It just depends on what the person who has obtained a stick does with it.
we cannot however say that anything can be a toy. Not all tangible things can be used as toys either. For eg. can we use a knife as a toy? or even an aircraft? haha no we cant =P
a stick is harmless and could be entertaining to play with =D
In my opinion, a toy is anything that can bring amusement to a child and/or adult so yes, a stick is a toy. Anything can be a toy if you have the creativity to utilize it. Think of the kids in Africa... they can't afford toys and they cope with what they have (like making games out of sticks and tyres and anything resourceful). I'm sure our great-grandparents and maybe even grandparents would eagerly reminiscence about the games they created out of mere scraps.
ofcourse! anything can be a toy if you use it to play with or have fun. a rock could be a toy when you kcik it around. similarly this applies for the stick too
Well, a stick can represent various toys or obejects for games and sports. In countless villages in India, a stick is used to roll around a tire of a cycle. In cities in America, a stick is used to play games like hockey or golf. But then again, I dont feel a child who grew up in a modern society would like to recieve a stick as a gift unless it had some significance in a sport, for example a baseball bat or a cricket bat. On the other hand if you gave a child in a rural village a stick, they would be ecstatic with joy and use it in various ways like drawing in the sand etc.
Is it one ? this entirely depends on the preferance of the user or his/her imagination capacity.
e.g. Someone who lacks imagination will only see a classfied and propely addressed toy as a toy and will se a stick as simply a stick
But someone with a imagination can easily see the stick as a toy and alot more.

Yes, it definately is a toy! Its just that not everyone will enjoy playing with it, for example i wouldnt love playing with a stick because i've got other, better toys. But children in villages find so many entertaining things to do with a simple stick because they can't afford to buy the fancy toys we play with (and they have an amazing imagination)!
I think that it is a toy because a toy is something you play with, and why cant you play with a stick. I bet that everyone used to play with a stick when they were younger!
A stick can be a toy, for example: in third world countries kids entertain themselves with sticks because they have never seen a real toy. It only takes a little bit of imagination to try and turn dreams into a possiblity like a child who has been through wars and seen his families being killed, by using his imagination he can envision the stick as a gun defending himself or killing the enemies in his mind!
well to myself it is definetly a toy,i mean people can use it for all sorts of things.I guess you just have to use your imagination and turn a stick into whatever kind of toy you want it to be.
Yea, totally! why not? If you're really bored, finding a stick to fiddle with would help you divert your attention from stupid thoughts. Exactly Its How Creative One Is !!
This Stick Given To A Very Imaginative And Creative Person Could Make Use Of It Efficiently...
But If Given To An Illiterate, Uninvented Person He Would Eventually Break It.. :)

Well yes, I believe it really does depend on the environmment you're in. If a child from a well-off family is given a mere stick, I don't think he'd be as happy as he would be if it were a toy car. But if it were a less unfortunate child who has no means of getting a toy car, or any other toy for that matter, a stick would prove to be quite enjoyable to play with.

Owais you dont need to be clever to play with a stick -.-
LOL; Exactly-.-
And, what's an 'uninvented' person? o.O
Owais, you'd be surprised to know what wonders people are capable off, even with a mere stick. Especially those who are illiterate and live in naturistic areas, as they appreciate nature alot more than we do and have a better understanding and can put even a measly stick to good use. Not just breaking it.
I believe anything you can entertain yourself with could be considered a toy, especially a stick. Looking back on when i was younger, i used to play with sticks all the time, they could be anything! Sticks would never play an important role in my life but maybe it does for those children who cant afford other toys.
