Doomsday?

Will the world end in 2012?
You've watched or heard about the film. You've read about it. What do you think? Should we sell our house and car and run for the hills?

I knew we would have this discussion sooner or later! :P

There're so many cults and civilizations or prophets that have made this prophecy and have all done it at different times, in different eras on different continents of the world! So could their coming up with the exact same date without any possibility of having any knowledge about the others actually be a co-incidence? Could they all have come up with the same date by mere chance? Quite an intriguing thought.

On the other hand, the religion that I follow, Islam, says that no one but Allah will know the true and final day of resurrection, the day of judgement, the day when our world will come to an end. There will be signs and pointers, but no mortal will know the specific date or time.

My faith leads me to take this 21st December, 2012 prophecy as a hoax. But inference drives me to believe otherwise. Either way, I don't think I'm running to the hills, if something has to happen it will happen and nothing anyone does will stop it. Besides, starting civilization from scratch in a pile of rubble doesn't sound like a very fun task to me! :)

Well, everytime I hear about it, you'll hear me exhert a loud sigh... So evidently i dont believe its going to happen.

And yet at the same time, I can't think of any way to convince people to agree. There are some strong facts included but alot of specualtion... The only real way I see to tell someone why I believe its not real is just one question:
Prior to you hearing about the movie, did you ever hear of the world ending in 2012?
The vast answer I would recieve would be a simple No. I remember telling someone that I honestly aspire to be like the people who've marketed this movie, in my honest opinion they precisely judged the reaction of the public, to make the most amount of effect, the most amount of hype and the most amount of money :D.

Just because this is the biggest, spread of doomsday prediction doesnt mean that its right...

I dont think so We should trust what anyone and everyone says. You cant obviously trust people like mentioned on the link posted above, but there is a person(A Lady I guess) who predicts things very accurately. She predicted that there will be a Tsunami and she gave a date period in which this would happen and it actually did. She predicts many things to do with Nature and life of people. If someone like her gives her prediction, then you might stop and think once again.

Sonal.Vohra said...

Duwane : "Prior to you hearing about the movie, did you ever hear of the world ending in 2012?"

You won't believe this, when I was in 7th or 8th Grade, I had a Social Studies Teacher who would teach Us History,Geography and Civics. She mentioned in one of Our classes that "Some People believe the World might end in 2012" and We were all worried but just made a joke out of it and laughed it away. And this is the second time Im hearing this, and guess what? Now there is a movie too on this topic!

Unknown said...

Because I always do Duwane. It's about time you learn to accept the truths of life. :)

Mo Nour El Din said...

Sir, this would be amazing to discuss in class, and I will have some very good points to state.

If the end of the world was coming, we would know. If the end of the world was on a specific date, we would have no idea. It is stated in the Qur'an (taking this just as reference - no insults to other religions), the most scariest of facts. These facts are predictions, that the final day is coming. These facts are:-

- We will compete to build large skyscrapers (is this not happening now?)
- Money will go to the greedy, and will disappear from the hands of the needy (is this not true?)
- Tsunamis, earthquakes, and more natural disasters, will occur more and more freuquently, constantly increasing (is this not the truth?)

These are just some of the facts, and it is, scarily, occurring. But in the Qur'an, even though many clues were given out, it NEVER stated the date, nor the exact time.

So, the last day is close, but we do not know for sure. As for this 2012 thing, I believe it is a lie. Nothing will happen in 2012. I know strong evidence that proves this, but, I am not completely discarding the 2012 thing, because, you never know. I am 99% sure that it is a lie, but that 1% is the problem.

Sir, can we please discuss this in class? It would give us an insight to the world and what is occurring out there, and, it is educational, and reaches into the "existential-smart" intelligence, which alot of us have.

- The movie took this chance to make money :)

Mo,
May be we can use it as an argumentative essay topic.

over the past years soo many people have predicted the world coming to an end yet nothing ever happened i think we should start living our lives for the day rather than worrying about the world coming to an end. I personally believe nothing will happen yet there will be a lot of destruction in the years to come.

Payam H.D said...

I've heard that the world is "ending" in 2012 many times but I never really believed it, and still don't. But would it matter if we did or did not believe the world was ending?
Logically, even if the world was going to end, believing it would happen or not would be irrelevant and could not help in any way, as nature isn't exactly going to wonder or worry if its inhabitants are aware of its nearing demise.

So if it is going to end, I'll just sit tight, waiting for a new adventure in another life! :p

Nadine said...

I don't believe the world will come to its end i 2012. As all muslims, I believe there is a possibility that the world WILL in fact come to an end in 2012, but we don't know for a fact.

The reason why this is to me a hoax is because I simply don't believe in human predictions, they have always failed to surprise and convince me. Plus of course the religion factor: That the exact date of the day of judgement is unknown to us humans.

If however, on the 21st of December, 2012, I'm proved wrong, well then I've got nothing to lose. I might as well just live for the day, as Nichole said.

Yoan Aher said...

I dont think the world will end in 2012 because there is not enough proof (in my opinion). I think that the world will end but we dont know when. How many people have said that the world would end on 6/6/06 or Y2K? But nothing ever happend... so that leaves me to think that its just a whole lot of talk.

neineisharie said...

Doomsday, my adorable, pink, felt flower.

I'm a steadfast Muslim and all so I do believe in a Last Day, however I highly doubt that it's going to be the winter solstice of 2012. I'm not too well-versed on the topic but from what I have read, it sounds completely ridiculous. However, I have seen people who are so completely hooked on the idea of the apocalypse taking place in 2012. They all plan to get drunk so the pain can be ~dulled. And, frankly, I'll be laughing when that happens :'D

On the flip-side, I swear if it actually does happen during my last year of school/first year of college I will scream so loud. God better not do this to me.

But, yeah, people have predicted so many things over the years and very, very few of them actually have come true. And if anyone pulls out Nostradamus...

Going through all the comments though, I will agree with Mo here. There is always that horrible, horrible 1%. Coincidence proves the best of us wrong sometimes...

(Also, how amazing was the movie itself?)

Victorion said...

i so do not think there's going to be doomsday sometime in 2012.

Mayan calendars could be based entirely upon their knowledge and in mii opinion i also do not think they were very knowledgeable? =S

Personal opinion is that the world wont come to an end in 2012.

Ishi_S said...

Ughhh not this again!! i'm so tired of this topic, i think even the world is tired of this topic... how many times can a person make this poor world end? Personal opinion: negatory, world not ending. And anyways there are wayy too many different theories on this for it to be believable, but good timing for the movie, i'm sure it's raking in the dough XD

Unknown said...

We cannot predict the future... Astrologers, palm readers and cults may do that but its only a predictions. I personally think that this topic is slowly getting over-rated. We can keep listening to people saying " Oh the world is going to end in a billion years" or " The world is going to end in 2012 or even tomorrow" If the world ends really in 2012..it is because of our negligence of not taking care of the place we live in. Also we will know when the world is ending when it is..:)

Who is this "Lady" who can predict things? Can she predict the winner of the Dubai Duty Free Raffle? I've been trying to win a Porshe for years...

(She should try predicting a winning lottery number and become fabulously rich?)

We are following a date made by Mayans.

The people who didn't even get out the stone age.

The people who had bad haircuts.

The people who had the worst class system.

The people who had the worst medicine.

The people who ate tapir droppings.

The people who would sacrifice there population by cutting their hearts out , doing this like 4 times a day all because they believed a story around the grass fire !

Oh have some common sense !

I'm pretty sure we're all gonna still be here in 2012 december 12.

The only thing that could possibly happen is me becoming the next great political leader then fixing the econemy, make india and china combine to have the greatest workforce in history, and bringing the world into a new age of technology and peace with all of society prospering, where countries all join together to form a strong human race with a near perfect way of maintaining a a continous flow of development all with me on a throne made of the rings of saturn sprinkeld with diomonds with a monkey on my shoulder and Hyenas at my feet.

Now that is FAR more likely !

Sonal.Vohra said...

Mr.Roberts, that lady is gifted with predictions that work with ones life span or things to do with Nature, and not man-made things like a lottery ticket number or The Dubai Duty Free Raffles coupon winners or so. And besides that, even if She was gifted with that predicting power aswell, why would She be predicting for other people to earn Money? She would probably be working to make her life better than it might be in the future. Most of the astrologers or predictors say that the power that they are gifted with cannot be used on themselves, the same way a barber cant cut his hair.

I dont really know if i really believe this 2012,bacause has been alot of times when people said the world was going to end but it didnt. And there are also a few arguements that MIGHT prove that the world MIGHT end in 2012.

It would be stupid to sell your house and your belongings being in the idea that the world's gonna end anyway, so I'm lucky to know about it before-hand, and therefore sell everything and run.
But run where?
You will need shelter, food, & decent clothing anywhere you go. As well as a job. For the money.

If doomsday has to come, then let it come. I am going to sit tight on my beloved possessions and enjoy life as it is. No person in his right mind would sell everything. When and if the day comes, death will be inevitable. For everyone. Why spoil your current life worrying about that day, when your money, status, respect, nothing will stay valuable? It is valuable now, so use it now.

Mr. Roberts said...

Agreeing with Nichole, Fay, Duwane and the others above - I don't believe anyone can predict when the world will end. I haven't even bothered to watch the movie or inform myself about this whole 2012 issue simply because in the 32 years I've been on this planet I've heard of far too many doomsday cults and end-of-the-world predictions: The Davidians, Heaven's Gate, The Solar Temple, The Family... the list is endless and tedious. They usually resort to the following to prove their predictions:
1. Religious texts
2. Astronomical events
3. Personal revelations (read schizoids who hear voices in their head)
4. High priests who get messages from aliens or miscellaneous gods.

And now we have the Mayans and their primitve calendar that ends in 2012. Boring!

I assure you, most of you will live to a ripe old age. You'll have children and grandchildren and the world will still be around. - More polluted, more crowded, filthier than ever with depleted resources - but the world will be here and we'll be scurrying around, busy and self important as ever.

neineisharie said...

...lol, omg, Sir your comment made my night. Especially the one about the Schizoids :'D

2012!!! no no no dont worry the world wont end! i think this is the 100th time that people have predicted the world to come to an end!!
honestly all i can say is GOD KNOWS!!!! like Mo said there are definitely signs written about the last day in the Quran and as a Muslim i can see most of these signs come true but genuinly really GOD knows when the world will end it, definitely will someday (but not soon like sir said we will live and so will my great grand children until the worlds resources are totally used up and we cant survive here any longer) and when it does you cant run away from it but hold on to your houses!!!

Unknown said...

Haha! Even my Mum keeps telling that when she was my age they use to say "the world is gonna end".
I've watched the movie 2012 and it IS very entertaining... I like watching movies like that because the effects are AMAZING and it does make you think.
Honestly, I'm not very religious, but I do think that no matter what science says, the world will end when God wills it to

Mo Nour El Din said...

Guys, do not eliminate the entire thought from your minds. Have respect for the Mayan religion and all Mayans, for you never know.

The Maya are probably the best-known of the classical civilizations of Mesoamerica, by creating the Western hemisphere's first complex calender, along with the most elaborate form of hieroglyphics in America.

If this is true, are you saying that the first people to create complex calenders and heirolgyphics, in America, will suddenly give out a random statement that the world will end in 2012? It will sound absurd to those outside the religion, but from within, from the core of this religion, there are people going berserk with this prospect, one that has thrived for centuries, and, personally, this cannot be ignored. Research deeply into Mayan history (http://www.crystalinks.com/mayanhistory.html), then make the conclusions.

Even though I still believe it is vague, then my opinion will have no value without the facts.

"Time will cease to exist, so long as ignorance reigns"

Mr. Roberts said...

Mo,
I know you're excited about this Mayan calendar, and I understand that. But you'll find as you grow up that there will be other predictions for the world's end in 2014, in 2015, in 2021, in 2025... and then by the time you're my age you'll get bored with these predictions. There have been thousands of cultures in our past -some far superior to the Mayans. Just because the Mayans lacked the imagination or intelligence or ability or time to complete their calendar does not mean the rest of the world should be bending over backwards to pay a few shrewd Hollywood producers millions of dollars for foisting a hoax on the public.

Yusra Shah said...

Sir you said it all. I strongly agree with you.

Unknown said...

JUST FOR THE RECORD

The Mayans (who were the FIRST) predicted the date was December 23rd 2012

NOT THE 21st!

Now I personally believe in Living the PRESENT! Not the past, NOR THE FUTURE! There is reasonable doubt for both whether or not the world may end 2012. (And Yes, the best arguments are presented by Science and Religion).

All I can say is,
Even if this does happen, when all hope is lost, while most of the world runs, I would rather sit back and admire the view for the last time.

Unknown said...

i quite enjoyed the movie! and honestly if the world is ending due to the earth's crust displacement theory then yes we should build those ships in the movie.
but honestly, it's not gonna happen. like many people mentioned earlier, there have been dozens of predictions about the end of the world and it hasnt happened!
the only way i'll ever believe the world is ending is if scientists actually give solid evidence of it - not weak predictions or exaggerated rumors

Jurgienne said...

I havent watched or read about the film's storyline, though I have heard of a gazillion doomsday 'prophecies' ever since I was little.

Hmm, OKAY WAIT, I still AM little. FINE, Since I was YOUNGER :P

Tbh, though I don't believe in it entirely, there's still a part of me that's really worried about it. I've gone through sh*t for 14 years, studied really hard to reach my goals in life, counted the years till I could drive since I was 4..

AND THEN BAM! the world will effin end? EVEN BEFORE I'VE REACHED 18?!

jgbnwsebrlsbj!

"seers" have predicted the world was gonna end in the year 2000. And then, when it didnt happen, they pushed it forward to 2004. Then to 2006.

Year 2012 will come and go, and pretty soon after that, people will panic, saying that the world will SURELY end on 2014 or something. -.-

Anyway, this enforces the awesome motto that we should all follow. Live life to the fullest, coz we'd never know.. Tomorrow might never come :)

And on the whole running to the hills thing (RUN TO THE HILLS - IRON MAIDEN..! AARGH! :D ok. that was random).. I dont see any point in trying to survive through the world ending, and being left as last person on earth. I'd rather die along with the others (I'd shoot myself if I have to), than be left to push through alone with a dying world around me.

:]

Haha I love the ending of the article: ‘Check the site in 2013 to see what it says.’
Anyway :P

I would be joining the other millions of sceptics out there by saying ‘I don’t believe this’. I have great faith in the ‘Day of Judgement’, and if that day IS in December 2012, I presume it to be a complete co-incidence. I respect the (Mayan)religion, and their beliefs, but nobody can predict the future, no matter what the ‘signs’ are. The world will end, be it tomorrow, or in another millions of years, and there is nothing we can do about it. Which is why we have to live each day like our last- not because we’re going to die in three years time, but because anything is possible.

If and when we live through 2012, I can only imagine the millions of excuses ‘they’[those who ‘predicted this] will come up with to cover up for their false prophecy.

There’s a picture going around that really cracks me up – a man with the Mayan calendar etched upon a rock. Another man questions him, ‘so why does it end in 2012?’. He replies: ‘I ran out of space on the rock’. :)

Lol Mehvash

Yeah The Picture! Seen It Tooo! Well Exactly What Mehvash Said That I Believe In The Judgment Day And It Could Happen Any Time No Matter What Its Sign Are !

When 2012 Is Over People Would Say The World Would End In 2015 2020 2050 ....

Its Just Better To Ignore Them :)

Tannya D said...

Well. Honestly - I don't think the worlds going to end in 2012. They said the world would end in 2006 or 2002 or something - and seriously? I don't see people either dead, or living on the moon; we're quite obviously still on earth as the planet still exists.
However, when you think about things like Noah’s Ark, you can see that as a planet, the earth turns to dust and reforms every few billion years or so. This idea has been scientifically proven correct AND incorrect - hence, I don't believe that anyone can truly tell when exactly the world would end. But that doesn't change the fact that alot of people believe whatever’s officially written on paper - hence the world ending in 2012, put down on a calendar, makes it a very strong base, leading people to believe what might just happen a few years from now.
I'm not saying there’s absolutely no chance of the world actually ending, it’s possible, anything can happen at anytime. But I think people need to relax and live just for the present, cause believe it or not.. we are NOT going to be able to survive very comfortably on the moon.:P So, what shall happen is to happen anyway - and if you really want you can try running to the hills - but what’s the point, when really, the world coming to an end would mean the ENTIRE planet being DESTROYED. Which is why I don't agree with the movie 2012 too much- they've shown people being able to survive in certain parts of the world - seriously, it’s the end of the entire world the Mayans are talking about, not the end of a small portion of the world. If that was true - why aren't people migrating to china RIGHT NOW? Why worry about just one part of the world ending? It's the planet earth that might be destroyed - and if that’s true, well... Tough luck…

JUST BECAUSE, the mayan calendar ends in 2012, doesn't mean the world is ending in 2012. That is like saying because the calendars for 2010 haven't been printed yet, therefore we are all going to die in 2009.
:P
Honestly, there is so much more to discover and do before the plug is pulled if you ask me.

memomadness69 said...

There have been countless theories throughout time about how the world will end.
Y2Ks theory was that the new century would bring about total destruction, and no one would survive.
Others believe that Earth is slated for another ice age, which will kill off all living things.
And according to astronomers, billions of years from now, the sun will become a red giant. Expanding to a size larger than the Earth's orbit and consuming Earth in the process.
Now there is a new theory THE WORLD ENDING IN 2012.
The Mayans created a calendar with accurate predictions.
The Mayans said "A new life will begin" not "The worlds Doomsday"
By coincidence, 2012 happens to be the rebirth of the Mayan calendar.
My opinion, No one knows when the world will end. Nor is there scientific proof to back that up yet.
